Minka Podhajskas simple but beautiful wooden toys were on exhibit at the MoMA and I just completely fell in love with them when I first saw them. They captured the essence of each subject that was portrayed perfectly. I admired the fact that she had created these toys from a raw material like wood and transformed them with what seemed like very little effort. As for my concept, I wanted to keep the simple nature of her toys and use a very limited pallete. I want to push the idea of transformation and use the splitting of a log as a way of conveying this idea. In the beginning, the dog is given the gift of life but he also has the ability to breathe life into other creatures. He goes around collecting his friends and at the end, they all gather and shatter into many pieces. The shattered particles collectively form the name of the artist.
All of the models will be made in 3D but made to look like they are flat. Color pallete will be limited to 3 or 4 colors for each object; light, middle, and dark. Background will be a flat yellow. All of the scenery will be made to look like theyre made of wood or wood blocks.
The first transformation from wood to dog will be a simple 3 part reveal. The rest of the transformations for the other creatures will happen more quickly. The trees in the background will sprout from the ground as the camera pans. The movements of the animals will just be a rocking motion as if a child were playing with them (this idea is probably bound to change).
I want to use wood block percussion sounds in conjunction with classical impressionist music.
