MRI Textbook Recommendations as of October 2009 Students/DPMs first need to know cross-sectional anatomy.

I believe this is more than half the battle of learning to read MR images. This isn't taught or assessed to any great degree, unfortunately. I have seen many individuals (including myself) attempt to learn reading MR images without learning the cross-sectional anatomy first, which usually resulted in frustration and failure. Mayer, Hirsch, and Simon's Foot and Ankle: A Sectional Imaging Atlas (1993, Saunders) has the most detailed labeling, including MR, CT, and cadaversectional images for comparison. The bad new is it is out of print, but there are 12 new and used copies of it listed on Amazon (as of this moment). Many of these images with labeling were reproduced (with permission) and included in the textbook Foot and Ankle Radiology by Christman (2003, Churchill-Livingstone). Another excellent reference is Diagnostic and Surgical Imaging Anatomy: Knee/Ankle/Foot, by Manaster, Crim and Rosenberg (2007, Amirsys). As for MRI textbooks that are all inclusive (anatomy and pathology), there are two books specific to the foot and ankle: Practical MRI of the Foot and Ankle by Spouge & Pope (CRC Press, 2001) MRI of the Foot and Ankle by Deutsch, Mink, & Kerr (Raven Press, 1992) The following is specific for the lower extremity: MR Imaging Strategies for the Lower Extremities by Breitenseher (Thieme, 2005) These texts are more general: MRI of the Musculoskeletal System 5th edition, by Berquist (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2005) MRI of the Musculoskeletal System by Vahlensieck / Genant / Reiser (Thieme 2000) Musculoskeletal Mri: A Rapid Reference Guide by Asif Saifuddin (Oxford University Press, 2008) Other special publications include: Seminars in Musculoskeletal Radiology 9(3): MR Imaging of the Forefoot (Thieme, September 2005) Foot and Ankle, An Issue of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Clinics (The Clinics: Radiology 16:1, February 2008, Saunders) Recommendations (still in print and not out-of-date): Diagnostic and Surgical Imaging Anatomy: Knee/Ankle/Foot, by Manaster, Crim and Rosenberg (2007, Amirsys) MR Imaging Strategies for the Lower Extremities by Breitenseher (Thieme, 2005) Foot and Ankle, An Issue of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Clinics (The Clinics: Radiology 16:1, February 2008, Saunders) A 2nd edition of Christmans Foot and Ankle Radiology (2003, Churchill-Livingstone) is currently in the works and will have updated chapters/sections on cross-sectional imaging and MRI, including a DVD.
