Project #1: Multi-Modal Literacy Narrative Part 2: Cultural Domain Analysis Instructions (Part 1 Domain Analysis Chart): When introducing the Multi-Modal Literacy Narrative project, we established that your mind is influenced by different cultural/social systems that work both separately and together to shape your ideas, beliefs, and practices as a reader and writer. To analyze these systems, your first task is to complete the domain analysis chart in which you must reflect on each of the four domains listed below and identify as many practices, ideas/values/beliefs, objects, or significant details from each cultural/social system that you think has influenced your literacy and composition skills.

Home School Didnt go to preschool because my mom didnt want us to. Elementary school was a small rural school. Did a lot of reading and writing, simple texts of course. Moved to Gastonia for my 2nd and 3rd grade years of school which was also a very small rural school. Family: Mom, dad, sister, two brothers Mom is a teacher, dad is a postal worker I am the youngest Middle class family All of my family (grandparents, aunts and uncles) are English, but were from the south so we all have an embarrassing southern accent. Grew up going to church all the time Listened to a lot of music (mainly Christian) Since my mom was a teacher, I was exposed to learning how to read and write at about the age of 3 (little words and books though) When I was young, I learned that you do s your told and you dont disobey or talk back, which had a slight effect on me but not too much I spent a lot of time with my siblings and cousins, which were all older than me

Work I babysit (the only job Ive ever had) Most of the families I babysit for are very proper, also English Most of the kids that I watch are very well mannered (although I do get the occasional crazy ones) If you count working at church with childrens events then I do that also At church, I was exposed to children with a lot of different backgrounds. My mom has always been a teacher so when she comes home she always talks about her kids, so Im exposed to more conversation with children.

Neighborhood / Community / Peers Everyone in my neighborhood is English, very southern Most all of my neighbors are family. Where I live is about 20 minutes away from the city so its a very rural place Ive lived there all of my life, except for when I was 6-8 years old, I moved to Gastonia. While living there, we lived a small

Most of the writing that we did was creative writing. In-between school? (North Windy Ridge) (back in Weaverville) a 5th and 6th grade school Was exposed to a lot of different literatures there. Had a technology class where we learned how to use computers Joined a chorus class. Middle school (7th and 8th grade) Joined band Mainly the same as North Windy Ridge except for a higher level basis. High School Exposed to a butt load of different literature Did a lot of essays there, feeling forced to use big words that I dont use in my everyday life Also did a little of creative writing here and there Did marching band and chorus all 4 years

neighborhood. I became friends with very outspoken people, which made me the same way

Instructions (Part 2 Domain Analysis Narrative): Now that you have completed the chart and generated some ideas about the cultural/social systems you engage with, it is time to flesh out those ideas, and analyze/explain how you think each domain has influenced your literacy and composition. For each of the systems listed below, write between 75 and 100 words to explain the major details of each cultural/social system and how the qualities of each system have influenced your literacy and composition (this means you will compose four short analyses total). You may complete your essays below. Simply type your essay next to each of the headers.

1. Home: At home, since everybody in my family is older than me, that had a big impact. I grew up around people that had a slightly bigger vocabulary than I did, besides my parents of course who had a much bigger one than me. My mom being a teacher also had a big influence on me. Since she knew how to teach young children, I got the privilege to learn how to do most things before I went to school such as learning the alphabet and learning how to write my name. So my home life didnt have a ton of impact on my literary life but it had enough.

2. Work: Seeing is how I didnt have a legit job, its kind of difficult to describe my literary influence that my work had on me. When I talked to the parents, most of them were very proper, which made their kids very well mannered. So when I babysat, I felt like I was mostly babysitting adults because thats what most of the kids talked to me like. Some of the things that I talked about with the kids I could probably talk to with my parents. Now being at church was different because you have kids that are from many different backgrounds and so its kind of difficult to talk to some of them. You have to use a lot of baby talk. So all in all, my job did have a slight influence on me.

3. School: School probably had the most influence on me. I was exposed to a lot of different backgrounds there. In high school, I had a lot of friends that were very outspoken people and they

loved to go out and be crazy. Hanging around with them had a very big impact on my life because the more that I hung out with them, the more I became like them. I started to become more of an outspoken person myself, at home and at school. My teachers at school also had an influence on me because they actually talked to us like adults instead of the babies that most of us were, well, acted like anyway. I would have one on one time with a lot of my teachers and have personal relationships with them which was really cool because I learned so much.

4. Neighborhood / Community / Peers: My neighborhood didnt exactly have much of a literary impact on me. The reason I say this is because practically all of my life I have grown up with my neighbors as my family, such as my grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. All of my family around me is very southern people, so when I would go and talk to them it made me become just as southern as they were. My peers, like I talked about before also had quite of an impact on me, but I wont go on about that again. But for the most part, my neighborhood had quite a bit of impact on me when I was younger because thats what I grew up around and thats the talking that I knew. If you didnt have a southern accent, then something was probably wrong with you.
