Did you attend a local sporting event and have a picture of a great play? Do you have pictures of a local event, festival or fair that you could share with our readers?

How much can you eat at one time? What if you tried to sit down at your dinner table and eat enough food to last you all week long? Could you do it? Lets say you could. Could you eat enough in that one sitting to last you all month? All year? Thats ridiculous, you say. Just like you cant eat enough food at one time to last you really more than a day, you literally cant live your life more than one day at a time. And on some level, you know thats true. But think for just a second about how your thoughts run way beyond today. Do you ever worry about something that may happen next week? Next month? Next year? Twenty years from now? So many people I coach choose to overwhelm themselves by worrying about what will happen in the next week, month, year, or 20 years. They become anxious by living way out of today. When you feel overwhelmed today, say to yourself, I choose to Live Positive today and remind yourself to only eat enough for today.

Violence Awareness Month. It states, This month, let us renew our efforts to support victims of domestic violence in their time of greatest need, and to realize an America where no one lives in fear because they feel unsafe in their own home. DVAM evolved from the first Day of Unity observed in October 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect battered womens advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The Day of Unity soon became a special week when a range of activities was conducted at the local, state and national levels. Now, Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a sweeping national movement that works to bring domestic violence and its prevention to the front of public discussion. Without question, domestic violence is a costly and devastating problem in our country and our community.

I was confident about our financial situation on the farm and started doing some pre-tax planning. Our accountant suggested buying some crop inputs for next year. After meeting with our supplier I was shocked at the projected cost to produce milk and I started worrying about cash flow.

My fertilizer supplier sensed my concern and suggested I call FarmNet. A FarmNet financial consultant came to my farm and helped me restructure my finances and implement a plan to more closely monitor my cost of production and reduce my stress. They did this at no cost. Thanks FarmNet!

Due to the dwindling number of active members we will be holding a reorganizational meeting on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013 at 6:00pm at the club. In explanation, we are finding some of our current active members are somewhat overworked and overwhelmed at times. The OV Rod & Gun Club Inc. is dedicated to sportsmen and area youth. We annually stock area streams with up to 10,000 trout. We sponsor the Hunter Safety Course and Kids Fishing Derby. In addition, we provide a rifle range for our members and hold trap shoots that are open to the public. We also provide a meeting place for the Alleghany Treeing Hounds Club, 4-H Club, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. At the present time we are in adequate financial position. We do, however, need more help with the few fundraisers we hold to help us meet our expenses (average approx. $500 per mo.). Our major fundraiser is the Bingo Hall at the fair and we are woefully short of help every year. We are putting out a plea to anyone that would like to see us continue stocking fish for the kids, keep the rifle range open and provide a meeting place for area youth groups to consider lending a hand. All we ask is that you try to attend a few meetings a year and attend one fundraiser. They are both fun and rewarding. So talk with a friend, relative or club member and consider attending the reorganizational meeting on Sunday, January 6th at 6:00pm at the Millport Club. We need your assistance and the community needs the club to continue the 55 plus year old tradition of supporting sportsmen and OV youth. If you find you cannot attend the Jan. 6, 2013 meeting please contact us by calling 814-697-6241 or through our web site (www.ovragc.tk) if you can lend an occasional helping hand. We would greatly appreciate it. fb RICHBURG-WIRT HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Richburg-Wirt Historical Society will meet Monday, Nov. 5 at 7:00 p.m. at the museum, 243 Main St., Richburg, NY. This will be the last meeting until March 2013 and we will have our Annual Christmas Party. If desired, bring a donation or gift for the museum.

To recognize those who step up to serve as volunteer guides for a veteran, the Game Commission will conduct a drawing to present six framed fine-art wildlife prints. Your Guide to Senior Living

Simple Ways To Protect Your Bones
As men and women age, many take steps to improve their overall health. These steps can be as simple as cutting back on dinner portions or as significant as joining a gym and committing to an exercise regimen. One of the best things men and women can do to improve their health, as well as their quality of life, as they age is to protect their bones. Though some are aware of the importance of protecting their bones, which weaken as the aging process progresses, leaving older adults susceptible to fractures, many might not know that protecting their bones is quite simple. Whats more, many of the roughly two million bone fractures caused by osteoporosis, a medical condition in which the bones become brittle from loss of tissue, are preventable. Men and women who heed the following tips to help protect their bones can reduce their risk of fractures as they age. * Get your calcium and vitamin D. Calcium and vitamin D promote bone health, and many people are aware of those effects. However, a 2005 study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocriology found that 52 percent of postmenopausal women on osteoporosis treatment had insufficient levels of vitamin D, despite being told by their doctors to take both vitamin D and calcium. If your diet does not include adequate vitamin D, which can be found in fortified dairy products, egg yolks, and fish, then vitamin D supplements can help meet your needs. Calcium can be found in a variety of products, including fortified cereals and juices, dark leafy greens like broccoli, almonds and a host of dairy products.

* Visit your physician. Few people might know that bone health is actually measurable. A bone density screening can assess your bone health, while FRAX(R), an online tool developed by the World Health Organization, evaluates a individuals risk of fracture based on a host of factors, including age, weight, height and your medical history. FRAX(R) models give a 10-year probability of fracture, which can help prevent injuries down the road for those people whose risk might not be immediate. The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends all women begin receiving bone density screenings at age 65. However, women with additional risk factors, including smokers, those with low weight or a thin frame, family history of osteoporosis, late onset of menstrual periods, and a history of anorexia or bulimia, should consult their physician about screenings regardless of their age. * Get out and exercise. Exercise is another great way to protect your bones. Unless you suddenly embrace competitive weightlifting, exercise wont increase your bone

density, but it will help you maintain the bone density you already have. Something as simple as walking can help maintain bone density, as can other weight-bearing activities like jogging. Cardiovascular weight-bearing activities can be coupled with strength training, which recent studies have found may improve bone mineral density, something that could delay the onset of osteoporosis and reduce your risk of fracture. A gym will likely have all of the strength-training materials you will need, but you can also purchase some hand weights or additional resistance training products to ensure your bones are getting adequate exercise. Consult a physician before beginning an exercise regimen, especially if you have recently had a fracture. More information about protection your bones is available at www.nof.org.

Exercises For People With Arthritis

Arthritis can make physical activity more difficult. In spite of that difficulty, exercise is an important part of staying healthy for men and women with arthritis. Even moderate physical activity can strengthen bones and muscles and increase joint flexibility, making it easier for arthritis sufferers to perform daily tasks. According to the Arthritis Foundation, men and women with arthritis should commit to regular exercise that includes three types of activities: flexibility exercises, strengthening exercises and cardiovascular exercises. Consult a physician before beginning any exercise regimen, and discuss any limitations your specific condition might place on your physical abilities. Such limitations might diminish as your exercise regimen progresses, but its important to exercise within those limitations at the onset to avoid injuries. Its also important to consult your physician should you experience a flareup of arthritis before, during or after exercise. Such flare-ups might require you to alter your routine, and your physician can help with such alterations. * Flexibility exercises: Perform flexibility exercises every day, as they will protect your joints by reducing injury risk. Flexibility exer-cises, which are often referred to as range-of-motion exercises, help your body warm up for more strenuous exercise. Once youre comfortable doing at least 15 continuous minutes of flexibility exercises, youre likely ready to add strengthening and cardiovascular exercises to your routine. Many people with arthritis find yoga is an especially effective flexibility exercise, as it strengthens and relaxes stiff muscles and even aids in weight-loss efforts. Just dont push

yourself too hard when starting out with yoga, as the exercises are more difficult than they might seem. * Strengthening exercises: Strong muscles reduce stress on the joints, something thats especially helpful to arthritis sufferers. Strengthening exercises, also known as resistance exercises, build the bodys muscles so theyre more capable of absorbing shock and more effective at preventing injury to the joints. When performing strengthening exercises, you will use weight or resistance to make the muscles work harder and grow stronger.Isometric strengthening exercises tighten the muscles without moving the joints, while isotonic strengthening exercises strengthen the muscles by moving the joints. The Arthritis Foundation recommends performing strengthening exercises every other day and always in conjunction with flexibility exercises, which can be performed before and after strengthening exercises. * Cardiovascular exercises: Walking, dancing, swimming and bicycling are examples of cardiovascular, or aerobic, exercises, which many people find the most enjoyable way to exercise. Cardiovascular exercises make the heart, lungs, blood vessels and muscles work more efficiently while improving endurance and strengthening bones. Initially, cardiovascular exercises might be difficult for arthritis sufferers who have not exercised in a while. However, you can gradually build toward 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise three to four times per week, and you will notice your endurance improves the more you commit and stick to your routine. Include cardiovascular exercises as part of your larger routine, performing some type of aerobic exercise after strengthening exercises. More information on exercising for people with arthritis can be found at www.arthritis.org.

Knowing where things will go will make them easier to sort. For those doing a major clean-out of the home, it could be efficient to hire a dumpster to be placed on-site. This way, larger bulk items can simply be tossed inside. Some municipalities restrict what can be placed in the regular trash or how much garbage can be collected, so this alleviates the stress of dealing with excess trash. When actually beginning to get rid of things, start with the areas that receive the least amount of use. Belongings stored in the attic or basement may be simply taking up space and hold less sentimental value. People can then work their way toward items that are used on a regular basis. It can be cathartic to clear out clutter and get ready to start anew. Some people find they have to downsize because of financial reasons. In these cases, thinning out belongings can also be a way to earn a few extra bucks. Selling or auctioning off seldom used items may produce a little extra cash that can help finance moving expenses or even bills.

Downsizing A Home An Option For Seniors

When a person comes to a certain age and the children move out and on with their own lives, a home may become too big for its occupants. At this point, residents may feel it's time to downsize to a smaller home. Downsizing can be exciting and challenging at the same time. Going through and packing belongings can be a trip down memory lane. But chances are a smaller space will mean that a person will have to part with a number of his belongings collected over time. To make the process easier, first assess how much space there will be in the new home. Many times floor plans or room dimensions are available. First measure large items, such as furniture, to be sure they will fit in the rooms. Then think about storage possibilities. Next, make a running list of what items can be discarded and where those items will go. Some belongings can be donated to charity, while others may be given to family and friends. Many other things could end up in the trash or recycling bins.

Newlyweds wel-coming an adult child (who will be a step-child to one parent) could face tension. * Set ground rules for the house. Remem-ber, the child is living under his or her parents roof. Parents rules apply. * Give each other the space needed. Three or more adults living in a space can eat away at nerves, especially if everyone has their idea of how things should be done. Re-spect others privacy and spend time alone when possible.

When The Empty Nest Becomes Full Again

Soaring unemployment numbers, rising prices on necessities and stricter rules re-garding qualifying for a home mortgage have become the norm. As a sideeffect, many adult children are finding difficulty making ends meet. The solution for many is to ask Mom or Dad if they can move back home.

Young adults and even established famil-ies are finding that the economic crunch is taking its toll on their ability to make it on their own. The scarcity of jobs and high foreclosure rates is leading a number of adult-age children to solicit their parents for a place to stay. While the situation is often billed to be temporary, the economic downturn might linger longer than expected. Recent census figures indicate that more than 80 million parents who generally would be empty nesters actually have at least one grown child living at home. Whether this is a result of the economic downturn, adult children car-

ing for aging parents or another financial situation, the rates are growing. Whats happening is that individuals who grew accustomed to their independent lifestyles are forced once again to make compromises living under the same roof. The results can be tenuous. H o w e v e r, there are steps to take to help the situation work. * There has to be a legitimate need for children to move back home. It cant simply be a whim or lack of ambition. * Parents should see a real need to help their child or children. * The situation should be presented as a temporary one, with a firm deadline. Children are expected to find new living arrange-ments as soon as pos-sible. * The children contribute to the household in a tangible method. This can involve financial contributions, housework, caring for parents or a combination of factors. * It is important for the child to have a good relationship with Mom. Studies indicate that a happier house-hold is indicative of mother and child co-habitating well. The relationship with the father isnt as import-ant, behavior experts say. * The parents relationship should be strong and establish-ed.

* Parents should not feel obligated to care for their adult childrens kids if they are moving in as well. Dont take over re-sponsibility or dimin-ish your childs authority over his or her own progeny. * Do not sacrifice your own financial future to help your children. Decide how much you want and can afford to help.

Eliminate Back Pain for Optimal Health

(StatePoint) Back pain is more than just an inconvenience. Its also an obstacle to good health, making it difficult, if not impossible, to exercise. One-half of working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year. If you suffer from back pain, or simply want to optimize your health and wellness, consider seeing a chiropractic physician who can eliminate your pain at the source, as well as offer nutritional and ergonomic tips to keep you feeling better. Back pain, if not treated properly and at its source, may go away temporarily, but will often return, warns Dr. Keith Overland, president of the American Chiropractic Association. Call 585-933-7398. 2/9p TIME TO PUT YOUR GARDEN TO BED By: Rex Spencer, Master Gardener, Cornell University Cooperative Extension Its a great time of year to work in your garden; no mosquitoes and mild temperatures. To make sure you have the best garden in 2013, follow these steps now to get your garden ready for the winter months and next spring. 1. Water your perennials and flowering shrubs in the fall. Keep watering until the soil is frozen if they are not getting 1 of rain per week from Mother Nature. 2. Remove annual and herbaceous plant debris. This reduces the chance of disease and insect problems in the spring. Disease & insects hide in plant debris throughout the winter months, only to rear their heads again in the spring. Diseased debris should not be placed in the compost pile as temperatures in most compost piles are not hot enough to kill all pathogens. (Temps. would have to rise above 140F. to kill disease organisms, but should not exceed 160F.) 3. Remove annual plants after a killing frost. Cut back all perennial plants that show signs of disease in the fall. Most perennial plants can be cut back, after a hard frost, to just above the crown as the nutrients will have been transferred to the roots. This is also a good time to dig and divide crowded perennials. Healthy perennials and grasses that provide winter interest can be cut back in the spring. Echinacea and Rudbeckia will attract and feed birds. Plants like Coral Bells, Butterfly Weed, and Chrysanthemums like the protection their leaves provide their crowns, so hold off cutting these back until spring. 4. Weed, especially perennial weeds; pulling them now when conditions are poor will cut down on problems in the spring. 5. In the vegetable garden, leave carrots, horseradish, leeks, parsnips, radishes & turnips in the garden to harvest through early winter. 6. After removing plant debris, the soil can be improved by incorporating organic material such as compost, well-rotted manure, or leaves. In Annual and Vegetable garden beds, till or work into the soil to increase drainage & reduce compaction. Tilling also exposes insects that plan to overwinter. In Perennial beds, do not till or work into the soil as you may injure perennial plant roots. Add 2 to 3 mulch to prevent damage from freezing or thawing. 7. Test the pH or acidity level of your soil. Fall is the best time of year to test the pH level of your soil as you can add the necessary amendments and allow them to disperse into your soil and begin to take effect over the winter. 8. Pruning of trees and shrubs is generally best left until late winter or spring. Pruning in fall will leave the cut stems

vulnerable to further dieback at the cuts and in some years may encourage buds to sprout during mild winter weather. Dead or damaged limbs can be removed any time. 9. Clean up fallen tree leaves and turn them into soil enhancing compost. Dry leaves can be plowed or tilled under in the vegetable or annual flower beds to provide a source of organic matter. Shredding leaves first will speed the breakdown. Be sure to mix leaves into soil to avoid keeping the soil too cold and wet to work in the spring. 10. If you plan to put in a new bed in the spring or have heavily weeded area, cover the area with heavy plastic and leave it in place over the winter and into spring to kill the vegetation. 11. Empty, clean and disinfect all your outdoor containers to keep them from cracking during the winter. Store them upside down. 12. Cover your compost pile with plastic or a thick layer of straw before snow falls to help contain the heat. 13. Clean and sharpen tools, before storage. Dont forget to clean and sharpen pruners. PLANT: Flowering bulbs, garlic, and rhubarb should be planted before the ground freezes. Sow seeds of spinach; theyll start growing for you in early spring. Plant a cover crop on your vegetable garden and till it in next spring. This will protect the soil during the winter and add nutrients to the soil next spring. Fall is great time to plant trees and shrubs, but be sure to water them until the ground freezes. PROTECT: Shield plants animals might eat with fencing and or tree guards. Make sure all tender bulbs are stores for the winter. Mound soil around the base of grafted roses; remember to remove it in the spring. Stop fertilizing plants so new growth wont get damaged by temperature drops. When the leaves have dropped, deciduous varieties should be lightly tied with twine to hold their branches against the weight of heavy snow and ice. FALL IS A GOOD TIME START: A compost pile. Youve got the stuff you just pulled out of your beds (not diseased materials). Shred and add your leaves to the pile. Leaf mold makes beautiful soil. Consider mulching for less weeds in the spring and better soil. A layer of mulch in the fall will suppress weed germination in the spring, while its protecting your plants. Make sure you weed first. FIELD REPORTS: YOUTH DEER HUNT A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE FOR NEW YORK HUNTERS Columbus Day weekend, October 6-8, marked the states first youth firearms deer hunt and reports from the field indicate the youth deer hunt was a success for many junior hunters as they learned about New Yorks rich deer hunting tradition under the watchful eyes of experienced mentors, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Joe Martens announced. The youth deer hunt is a great opportunity for the next generation of New York hunters and is an important step in preserving our hunting heritage while maintaining our ability to manage deer through hunting in the future, said Commissioner Martens. We received enthusiastic feedback from parents and excited young hunters who took part of the Columbus Day weekend. These experiences demonstrate the great value of providing this unique opportunity for junior hunters. During the youth deer hunt, junior hunters (ages 14-15) with a big game hunting license were eligible to take one deer of either sex with a firearm when properly accompanied by a licensed and experienced adult. The number of Junior Hunting license holders who were eligible to participate at least one day of the youth hunt was 12,753. To date, junior hunters have reported taking 486 deer, though hunters have 7 days to report their kill. DEC anticipates the final harvest estimate for the youth deer hunt will be higher after all reports are in and the harvest is calculated. DEC Environmental Conservation Officers and wildlife staff were afield throughout the weekend, monitoring hunter activity and talking with bowhunters, small game and turkey hunters, and junior hunters about their experience during the youth deer hunt. Reports from the junior hunters were

overwhelmingly positive, and other hunters reported their hunting was not affected by the ongoing youth deer hunt. Some hunters indicated that while they did not support the youth hunt when it was first proposed, their actual observations over the weekend and seeing what a positive experience it was for so many kids, has changed their minds. Additionally, New Yorks junior hunters demonstrated why mentored youth have the greatest safety record of all hunters across the nation; no hunting related shooting incidents were reported during the youth deer hunt. To showcase the success of junior hunters, DEC encourages parents to submit a picture to DECs Big Game Hunting Photo Gallery (www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/54055.html). f BACK STITCH AT THE RICHBURG COLONIAL LIBRARY Would you like to embroider a colonial sampler? is best for your purposes. Compromise cannot work without concession. It may be your wedding, but that doesn't mean you have all of the best ideas. The more open you are to getting the feedback of others and pursuing what works, the easier the planning will be. Of course, not all opinions are feasible. You must be able to separate the good from the bad, the essential from the nonessential, the import-ant from the not so important. If an idea will not work, there's no use in considering it. If an idea will work but you have your heart set on something else, it's fine to axe it. It is your wedding, and you don't have to concede on everything. Do remem-ber, however, that your wedding will be just the first of many good days to come. The fact that you have to simplify the wording on the invitations for your parents' sake probably won't matter to you 10 years from now. Respect is key. Family and friends must understand that it is not
