Population growth spurts Far East El Paso growth

With the advent
of the addition of two new first-run movie theaters in far East El Paso, this fastest growing part of town continues to boom. The question is why? Well, for the most part, El Paso cannot grow in any other direction. To the south of the city is Ciudad Juarez, Mexico; to the west are the two towns of Anthony one in Texas, one in New Mexico. Thus, the only expansion must be to the east. The growth and expansion of the U.S. Armys Fort Bliss hasnt hurt either. With Montana Vista growing by leaps and bounds with the Vista chain of supermarkets, and with its proximity to Loop 375, the market for theaters, grocery stores, and soccer fields, population growth is a given. The more people move into the area, the more amenities will find their way to the ever-increasing market. For example, the 14screen first-run movie houses will now open to movie buffs, saving them a long trip to Central and downtown El Paso. Cinemark and Carmike have joined the battle for ticket sales, hoping to outdo Tinseltown, Carmike and Premier Bassett Place, all located off the Interstate. But, of course, theaters arent the only attractions that help a community grow. Sierra Providence East Medical Center is gearing up for a $67 million expansion of its medical facilities more than two years ahead of schedule. The expansion means more beds, an enlarged emergency room, and other needed services. This hospital will help provide medical services to the burgeoning population a fact that, again, saves residents of the area many miles in seeking medical care in El Pasos more centralized facilities. Although the Medical Center did not envision such a rapid expansion, the fact remains that huge population gains have forced it to jump start its growth. Once again, the expansion of Fort Bliss will provide military families with civilian facilities partaking of medical services. The proximity of the military base and the housing boom in the area has created a great need for doctors. That need is being filled with the hiring of 350 more physicians, as opposed to the 120 that existed a few years ago. In addition, a proposed billion dollar William Beaumont Medical Center slated to open in 2016 will welcome military patients who may live in the area of Loop 375 and Spur 601. For the sportsminded lovers of Soccer, the citys upcoming November 6 multi-million dollar bond election, if approved by voters, will help build up to 12 soccer fields and an Olympicsized swimming pool, with two 50-meter competition pools, something El Paso has been without for too many

years. These recreational facilities will be constructed near Montana Avenue and Rich Beem Boulevard. With a population explosion that has seen the area bloom from 70,000 to 111,000, is there any doubt that far East El Paso is witnessing a huge growth spurt? But, for these facilities to become a reality, voters must approve the citys bond election. To those who live in the new housing subdivisions that are popping up, the recreational facilities would be a godsend. With houses being built near the proposed recreational facilities, family life will be vastly improved. As for the soccer fields, it is estimated that 75 percent of the more than 11,000 soccer players already reside in far East El Paso, and more are expected to purchase homes in the area. But, it all hangs in the balance. Some of the amenities, such as improved medical care and movie theaters are already a given. The citys plans to improve recreation to property owners, however, hinges on the approval of the $473 million bond election. Thats not a given at all, but, home owners are hopeful that growth will continue, a growth that spurs the economy, increases taxes paid to the city, and the continued development of an area that has been desolate for too long.

My Flight on the B-17 Bomber

There are only 6 of these B-17 bombers still flying across the country and this area was fortunate to have it in town for all to see and even ride. The Commemorative Air Force Arizona Wing Aviation Museum, based out of Mesa, Arizona, brought the bomber to the War Eagles Air Museum last week in Santa Teresa, NM. I was invited to broadcast my ABC-7 weathercast live from the museum and chat with the all volunteer crew. According to pilot Mel Tiensvold, the B-17 carried a crew of ten men, carried a normal bomb load of 6,000 lbs and cruised at an average speed of 182 miles per hour. It was used by the U.S. Army Air Corps in Allied war against Germany. What was neat about the whole experience was that the public could climb aboard the bombing fortress and take a look inside this flying museum. One could just imagine what it was like to be a part of this crew. The public was also invited to take a ride in this bomber. The B-17G Bomber Sentimental Journey In order for the plane to take off and cover the expense of this short flight, at least 5 people needed to buy a ticket. It costs just over $2,500 for the B-17s wheels to leave the ground. For $425, one could take about a 20 minute flight in the rear or middle section of the plane. If you wanted the best seat in the house (where the bomber would sit) you would have to dig a little deeper in your pocket - $850 for the glass enclosed nose seat. I was able to ride along with the crew, in that special seat, as the crew flew to the El Paso International Airport to fuel up on their way to San Antonio. This was a wonderful experience that I will never forget. I can still see that toggle switch located on my right hand side that read Bomb Release.

Weather Trivia:

When was this B-17 bomber used for before it was restored?

A. Storage facility for a private pilot B. Water bomber to put out forest fires C. Hurricane Hunter airplane D. Seeded clouds to make it rain

Who won the debate on October 3?

I think that President Barack Obama, in his first debate against challenger Mitt Romney, was presidential, cool and collected and showed a dignity that a President must exhibit at all times. Romney? Well, he came out like an attack dog, like the bully that he is, challenging the President, talking over moderator Jim Lehrers admonitions, basically, to shut up, and trying very hard to gain the upper hand. Pundits were falling all over themselves, criticizing the President for letting Romney steam-roll over the Presidents policies. But, listen up, folks. This was only Round One of Three Rounds. Obama was only sparring with Romney, not coming out swinging hard and fast, because he didnt want to lose his composure. But, never fear, there are still two rounds to go. Obama has already showed his steady hand and his dignity. Get ready for Round Two on October 16 thats when Obama, I predict will take off his gloves and challenge Romneys flip-flops and gaffes. The main focus in the debate was the economy. Despite Romneys doom and gloom predictions, the nations economy is showing signs of recovery. For one thing, the unemployment rate has dropped from 8.1 percent to a low 7.8 percent. More than 114,000 jobs became available in September. This shows that the Presidents economic policies are working. But, thats not good enough for Romney. He thinks that because he made over $250 million in outsourcing jobs overseas when he ruled Bain Capital, that it was good for American workers. He denigrated the new jobs report by saying that the drop in unemployment is not what a recovery looks like. Well, what is? He said that millions more Americans are on food stamps because of the Presidents policies. Ironically, he has said in the past that he will reduce the number of people relying on food stamps. Is that his answer? Well, of course, that plays up to his statement that 47 percent of the American public dont pay taxes and that they are only in it for what the government can do for them, in doling out food stamps, welfare, and other governmental programs, which some people rely on to survive. He will eliminate all those programs and make people more self-reliant, including the elderly, the disabled, and other free-loaders. I suppose that Im one of those free-loaders, even though I have never received food stamps, welfare, or any other perks. Last year I didnt pay income taxes because I am surviving on Social Security. However, I had paid thousands of dollars of taxes in my working life of 50 some years. Besides, I still pay taxes, such as when I buy a new pair of shoes, a new shirt, a new caryou get the idea. Okay, so the President didnt grill Romney on immigration reform, but, he will mark my words. Romney is the self-deport candidate. In other words, he wants undocumented immigrants to ship themselves back to the lands of their birth. He denigrates Obamas latest effort in allowing young people up to age 30 to remain in the U.S. and even to gain a work permit. This will allow more than 800,000 young people to step out of the shadows and into the light. But, thats not good enough for Romney. He wants a Comprehensive Immigration Reform whatever that means. (Can you say, Amnesty?). He says that Obamas action is only a stop-gap measure, only a piece-meal process. Oh, yeah? Ask the 800,000 young people how they feel about the new initiative. Romney has said that if he is elected President, he promises to eliminate this opportunity. And, you know Romney, he always keeps his promises. Say, maybe Romney can do what was done in the 1930s, with the Repatriation Act, in which more than one million mostly Mexicans were gathered up in raids, loaded onto trains, and shipped back to Mexico. So intent were they in kicking out the Mexicans that they werent allowed to return to their homes to pick up the papers that would prove they were either U.S. citizens, or were in the country legally. Even as recently as 2004, Pat Buchanan suggested that the Repatriation Act be, once again, instituted. Another wag suggested that immigration cops, and others, wade into a predominantly Mexican crowd and just haul them off to the border. Can you imagine the devastation this would cause? But, again, that is the Republicans answer to the immigration issue. In reality, when it comes to the immigration situation, President Obama has tried, repeatedly, to make it easier for undocumented people to become residents of this great nation. But, the obstructionist Republicans keep poking their noses and undermining his efforts. Why, even Republicans George W. Bush and John McCain have tried to pass immigration reform. But, its no dice, whoever has tried to change the status quo. So, please dont worry about the President. He is on track. If he didnt come out swinging in the first round of this three-round fight/debate, he will change his tactics. He cant allow Romney to take the upper hand again. If moderator Jim Lehrer couldnt control the bully Mitt Romney, maybe Candy Crowley can. Crowley is the host of Sundays political talk show, State of the Union, and is CNNs chief political correspondent. She will become the first woman to moderate a presidential debate in 20 years. Florists can fit any budget

Diane Schlindwein o wedding is totally complete without flowers, but sometimes those awesome arrangements are pricey. However, if you are a bride with a tight budget, there are ways to keep costs down and still wow your guests with your floral displays. Even if you know nothing about gardening, you probably prefer certain flowers. So let your preferences be your starting point. Look over a few bridal magazines or Web sites, and see what catches your eye. Then ask family, friends and co-workers for recommendations. Moreover, if you've admired a friend's wedding flowers or table decorations, don't be shy about asking, "What florist did you use?" When you do decide on a florist, let the florist know what's in your budget right away.

New York-based floral designer Steven Buckwald says that after 35 years in the floral industry, he feels as if he still is serving "anybody with any budget." Although he has many celebrity clients, he is determined to look out for all his customers. And these days, the majority of those customers are cutting back on their flower budgets. "With weddings, we are dealing with reality and psychology," says Buckwald, who is owner and president of Surroundings Flowers & Events (http://www.SurroundingsFlowers.com). "In this economy, we're dealing every day with budget constraints. Even people who have the money to spend don't want their flowers to be too flashy when others are hurting." Karen Bussen, another New York-based floral designer and author of "Simple Stunning Wedding Flowers" (Stewart, Tabori & Chang, 2006), says it's important to set a mood with flowers. If you like the idea of an English garden wedding but peonies are out of season or too expensive, ask your florist for a more affordable substitute. Buckwald suggests using local, seasonal flowers. "For example, use peonies in the spring or sunflowers in the summer," he says. "Of course, roses are available all year long, and they always work well." When it comes to floral arrangements, expansive doesn't have to be expensive, Buckwald says. "The key is to use foliage creatively and to integrate foliage such as ivy or lily grass or even branches into arrangements to make them look two times as large. Branches take up a lot of space, he says. I use curly willow, quince branches and birch branches accented with flowers. You can come up with magnificent pieces that are onethird the price. Stay away from costly containers, Buckwald suggests. "We use a lot of beautiful, tasteful glass and 'faux' containers that look great and cut down on costs." He also uses potted flowering plants, floating blossoms, scattered petals and candles to take up table

space attractively. "You can have a small arrangement and use lots of votive candles around it, and it looks beautiful. Remember, I won't do it if it won't look elegant." Both Buckwald and Bussen suggest having flower arrangements that can serve several purposes. "Move the flowers from the church or synagogue to the (reception) venue," Buckwald says.

"I also suggest cutting back on flowers if the wedding ceremony site is already gorgeous. Maybe you could just use greenery or a ribbon on the pews."

Other ways to save include scaling back on the bridesmaids' bouquets and the flower girl's tiara and keeping boutonnieres very simple. The focus of a wedding should be on the bride, Buckwald says. "The bride is holding her flowers in every picture, while the bridesmaids are basically just walking down the aisle. "Bridesmaids' bouquets can be two or three stems professionally wrapped with a ribbon. They will be simple but lovely," he says. "And as for the flower girl's tiara they can be beautiful, but a lot of the times, the little girl doesn't even want to wear it anyway." Finally, to find the right flowers, you have to find the right florist, Buckwald says. So start looking early. "These days, you have to do that. Everybody is insecure with what's around the corner," he says. "If you come across a florist who won't help you stay within your budget, go somewhere else. It's that simple."

Imagine your wedding lasting several days, where you get painted with intricate designs in henna, get ritually bathed, have multiple parties over those days, wear red and ride an elephant to your wedding ceremony. Your groom? He's on a horse. This may seem unrealistic for you, but for many Indian wedding ceremonies, this is standard. Although many countries have adapted to Western wedding traditions, a lot of their traditions are heading to America. "Couples want more of a personal stamp on their weddings and look to their heritage as a way of doing this," says Harri-

spiritual grounding in a difficult time. Although weddings are meant to be joyous, the stress of putting together a huge event can take a toll on couples. Cole says that in African-American tradition, there is a lot of importance put on family, including the merging of two families. During the ceremony, sometimes the families will join hands while the minister makes a unification blessing. For Cole, this is important, as it reminds the couple that there is more to their marriage than just them. "Any couple getting married should first have spiritual grounding and knowledge of themselves," she says. This includes allowing families to get involved in the wedding process, as it helps the couple find their own identity. A lot of the rituals practiced by African-Americans, for example, "keep the spirit alive the feeling that one's words and deeds mean something and the acknowledgment that you are becoming family and will cultivate new family relationships after the wedding." Are you unsure of the traditions from your heritage? You always can look them up online. The Knot has a large resource for different wedding traditions from cultures around the world. But if you don't like the traditions from your country, here are some fascinating traditions, courtesy of The Knot, with some ideas for how to incorporate them into your wedding:

It doesn't have to be one or the other

Chandra Orr With a little compromise and the right officiant a mixed-faith couple can design a ceremony rich in tradition, one that reflects their shared values while satisfying families on both sides. "One of the biggest challenges is for the couple to be true to themselves, accommodating to their parents and gracious to their guests," says Celia Milton, a minister and civil officiant based in North Haledon, N.J. "It is a delicate balancing act, but when done well, an interfaith ceremony can present mixed groups of guests with an experience that they find interesting, informative and inspiring rather than alienating or exclusive."

BLENDING RELIGIONS

*Find the Right Officiant

Who will preside over the ceremony? It's one of the biggest questions facing mixed-faith couples. Some opt to blend the two traditions with co-officiants, one from each religion. Others bypass the predicament with a secular civil servant. "Many couples choose to go this route, eliminating all religious references from their ceremony, thereby sidestepping the problem," says Maureen Thomson, wedding officiant and owner of Lyssabeth's Wedding Officiants, with offices in California, Colorado and Oregon. In each case, an open-minded officiant is a must. "A professional wedding officiant who is not a member of either faith would be the best option someone who honors all beliefs," Thomson says. Look for an officiant experienced in mixed-faith marriages, one who can offer plenty of advice on blending the two traditions. "They'll be able to guide the couple to rituals and readings that will be appropriate to the ceremony," Milton says. "They'll also be able to counsel the couple on traditional elements that they might not have considered but that might be very, very important to the parents and family." Even if your pastor, priest or rabbi makes an appearance, skip the church, the mosque or the temple, and opt for a secular location. "Start with a neutral playing field," Thomson says. "Holding the service at a place of worship will send the message that one religion trumps the other in the marriage, no matter what elements of the other religion are interwoven into the ceremony."

Want to spice up your wedding? Borrow traditions from different parts of the world.
ette Cole, an author specializing in African-American culture, in an interview with The Knot. She says she has seen a lot of African-American couples incorporating aspects of African culture into their weddings. These traditions often offer

*Create New Rituals

Instead of fussing over your differences, focus on the commonalities between the two faiths. "Embrace the diversity of beliefs right at the start of your ceremony, framing it as a positive element, as opposed to a challenge," Thomson says. "It is rare that there are not some common fundamental beliefs that can be used as the bedrock of the wedding ceremony." Consider the important rituals from each religion from the glass breaking at the end of a Jewish ceremony to the unity candle common in Christian weddings and use those rituals as a tie between the faiths. OTHER THAN SATURDAY

What are the advantages and disadvantages of choosing another day?
Some women start thinking about their dream weddings from a very young age. Especially as a child, the traditional fluffy white dress, white horse and Saturday full of flowers and dancing play big roles in the fantasy. You're probably guilty of this yourself and may secretly still have this in your dreams of the big day. This fantasy isn't always practical, though, and it may limit some other fantastic options, especially when choosing the special day. Planning a wedding and checking out a date? It's likely that the first days a bride-to-be will look up for her big day are Saturdays. Why is Saturday the most popular day to get married? The fact that it's during the weekend, when many working people are off, plays a big part in it. According to The Knot, a Lauren Baumbauer day weddings means Saturdays are generally costlier than other days. A Friday or Sunday wedding would be more pocketbook-friendly, and a non-weekend ceremony would be even more so. Booking a venue also would be much easier, according to The Knot, because the lack of demand that makes the cost more reasonable also pertains to the time slot. Couples don't have to set their weddings way in advance, and they're likelier to get their dream locations on short notice. Make sure to check all of the days and times the venue has available. Some places, such as churches, have to make special arrangements. The hardest days to get guests to arrive may be earlier in the week, when the daily grind sets in. A disadvantage to the non-Saturday wedding is convenience for the guests. Particularly if guests are arriving from out of town, they won't want to take time from work, and they need to plan on drive time or flights. If the wedding is small and there aren't a lot of out-of-towners or it's planned near a holiday during typical vacation time, then this shouldn't be a problem. Wedding ceremonies held on other days lend some time for creativity in the celebration, too. The Knot suggests the bridal party be held on Friday, with a day of relaxation on Saturday before the Sunday ceremony. Or a Friday night wedding may involve a more adult atmosphere, especially for those getting off work and ready to enjoy themselves at a ceremony meant for a good time. A destination wedding, which already may have a limited number of guests, can cut back several costs just by changing the day of the week. Your dream wedding still can be a reality. It may just be surprising how much easier it is to wear the fluffy white dress and ride the white horse with your prince into the sunset on a day other than Saturday.

Continued from page 10 "These can all be combined or new rituals created," Milton says. "I had a JewishChristian couple who did the glass breaking at the end, but they used a glass Christmas ornament hidden in the velvet bag." "Another couple had their moms, one Jewish and one Buddhist, present them with their wedding rings and offer a short traditional blessing as they did. It was lovely," Milton says. Look for ways to incorporate subtle symbolism. Ask the officiant to honor each faith with an article of clothing a yarmulke worn with a stole bearing a Christian symbol or a prayer shawl worn with a clerical collar. Such representation can go a long way toward appeasing older relatives without saying a word, Thomson says. According to Thomson, when blending religious customs such as lighting a unity candle under a chuppah focus on the symbolism rather than the religious interpretation and your guests will be onboard. Ask your officiant to explain each ritual and offer insight into the history of the diverse customs. "Oftentimes, once the meaning of a ceremony is explained, objections dissolve," Thomson says. And don't overlook the reception. "At the reception, there is generally less stress about convictions," Thomson says. "Consider a dual blessing over the meal; incorporate traditional dances and customs from the separate cultures; or make a toast to both sets of parents, celebrating diversity and tolerance." Above all else, focus on what you as a couple want in your ceremony but be mindful of others. Throughout the planning process, talk openly and honestly with your family. "Oftentimes, parents are afraid that their child's love for someone of another faith means that they are rejecting the faith of their upbringing," Thomson explains. "Reassure parents that you still ascribe to your own faith but simply wish to honor the faith of your spouse-to-be."

If you have your wedding on a day other than Saturday, who knows what you'll be able to afford? Web site devoted to brides-to-be for all of their wedding planning needs and stresses, Saturday is easier for people who work during the week and live out of town, because they have time to come in, relax and leave without intruding on their normal schedules. Popularity does include problems. Saturday is often a very hard day on which to book a wedding. Reservations need to be made years in advance for some venues. Venues, caterers and other services that may be involved on the big day also often come with hefty prices on Saturdays because of competition. The wedding industry is a $50 billion industry, according to statistics from the Association for Wedding Professionals International, and those involved with making a wedding happen know how to squeeze every dime out of the bride and groom. Also, Saturday isn't a common day to tie the knot in Judaism. The Jewish Sabbath, falling from sunset on Fridays to sunset on Saturdays, is meant for relaxation. The stress and planning of a wedding completely go against the Sabbath, so Sunday is the most popular day for Jewish weddings. Sunday is becoming more and more popular as an off-the-beaten-path day to wed. With all of the hassles of Saturday weddings in mind, checking out another day may be the best bet for couples. What are the advantages of straying from the Saturday path? For the bride on a budget, the advantages are many. Supply and demand for Satur-

This keeps you from falling in love with gowns you cant afford, consequently preventing you from suffering heartbreaks. If there is an embellished gown that you want that is over your price range, go for a plain dress with a similar style, and then jazz it up yourself. n Design your own dress by taking bits and pieces from various bridal gown pictures, and then take it to a dressmaker to have it sewn. Or if you are excellent at sewing, you can make your own dress. There are many different patterns and fabrics available online.

You dont have to break the bank to get a beautiful, special wedding dress. Below are some ideas to keep your gown expense reasonable.
n There are many beautiful fulland tea-length bridesmaids dresses available in many shades of white and ivory, so consider substituting one as your wedding dress. If you have bridal accessories, no one will know that its not really a bridal gown. n There are many secondhand and vintage dresses available online and at specialty stores. Many only have been worn once and are in perfect condition. Before you buy a gown, check carefully for stains and damage, and always buy one that is one or two sizes larger than what fits you so it can be altered for a custom fit.

GREEN WEDDING
Congratulations! You just got
engaged with a conflict-free diamond ring, and now you're busy planning your very own "green" wedding ceremony. But before you wiggle into that fairy tale dress of hemp, why don't you take a long sip of your favorite organic wine and make an eco-friendly to-do list? Just because you and your partner are committed to saving the planet doesn't mean you can't have a fabulous wedding. You just need to think a little more creatively. cled paper or via e-mail. You also can set up a Web site for guests to use to RSVP and request the chicken or fish. *Consider limiting your gift registry. If you don't need china and glassware, you might want to suggest that guests make donations to your favorite charity. *The attire is usually a major expense for any wedding, but even if you're going "green," you still want to look fabulous on the big day. There are lots of eco-friendly alternatives available today, whether it's wearing your mom's gown, going to a consignment shop or having a vintage gown remodeled. You even might want to buy a gorgeous evening gown that you can wear for years to come. And there are plenty of eco-conscious fashion designers now who use ecofriendly fabrics. *Let's face it; most wedding gowns are worn only once, so there are plenty of ways to think "recycling" on this expense. Ditto for the groom and the wedding party. You can go to http://www.GlassSlipperProject.org, where bridesmaids' dresses are recycled for girls who

Many jewelers now have alternatives to consider, from using recycled stones to remaking vintage pieces to sources for conflict-free diamonds. *When you pick the venue for your green wedding, choose a location that is easy on the environment. An outdoor locale, especially for a daytime event, will reduce the need for energy consumption. There are several eco-friendly re-

Here are some ways to vow to do it greenly:

*Start by limiting the "excesses" of the entire event. Keep your guest list to a minimum. This will eliminate some of the "waste" often associated with large crowds and cut down on other costs associated with invitations, catering, etc. *Send out your wedding invitations on recy-

sorts or nature centers that may benefit from the money you spend. *Catering is also a way you can definitely go green on your wedding day. Choose a caterer or chef who specializes in using local and seasonal organic foods, and then work closely with him in selecting a menu with food that will appeal to a variety of your guests. If you will be serving organic wines, be sure to sample them first. *Flowers are always "greener" when chosen from a local farmers market or flower farm instead of flown in from around the world. Cut back on the huge centerpieces, and use smaller, more natural bouquets or other "organic" materials, such as seashells, tree branches, sand, etc. Dried or silk flowers may be another option. *Favors for your guests may be as simple as a gift of plantable flower bulbs or a tree seedling (check out the Arbor Day Foundation) or even wildflower seeds. Chocolate from organic fair trade cocoa beans is another delicious possibility. Or you can make a donation to your favorite charity in your guests' names. *There are lots of eco-friendly travel destinations to consider when making honeymoon plans. Explore the possibilities of camping on the beach, hiking in the mountains, relaxing at a spa or seeing the countryside by train. You even can stay in a treehouse (http://www.PostRanchInn.com)! When you say "I do" to minimizing your carbon footprints, you never know where they will take you.

Video Game ReViews BY JeB HauGHt

Slow Pace Kills "Resident Evil 6"

DEVELOPER: Capcom PUBLISHER: Capcom SYSTEM: Microsoft Xbox 360 (PS3) PRICE: $59.99 ESRB RATING: Mature REVIEW RATING: 2.0 stars (out of 5) Ever since I played the original "Resident Evil" game, I've wanted more control over my character. Tension was heightened by not being able to move while shooting, but I wanted controls similar to an action game. Sadly, that wish has been granted but at the expense of the series. Much like the mutated creatures in the game, "Resident Evil 6" is only a shadow of it's former self. Fans looking for an abundance of "Resident Evil" history won't be disappointed, as there are three initial storylines that intersect at different points. Each storyline features two famous characters from the series, meaning four players intersect for important boss fights and other critical events. One cool feature is that each story can be played cooperatively online, making for some interesting banter back and forth between players.

Unfortunately, I don't like much else. For starters, the game's pace is more sluggish than the meandering zombies from the original game. At several points in one story, my character was unable to run for no apparent reason. Other times I had limited control, couldn't fire my weapons and story points interrupted the action too often. I hate losing control so often, especially since I was also inundated with countless boring QuickTime events. Combat feels unpolished and bad camera angles frequently make the game unnec-

I appreciate the handy new dive move that lets me attack enemies and/or quickly avoid incoming attacks, but why do I have to press two buttons to take cover? It's cool that the new enemies, called J'avo, can use hand weapons, but why is ammunition so scarce? This oversight only adds frustration, not tension! The only scary thing about "Resident Evil 6" is that the developers thought fans would prefer playing an inferior "Call of Duty" zombie mode instead of an actual survival horror game!

Renters pets get to keep their claws

Kittens and cats get to keep their claws by law in California

A: If you watch a

litter of puppies play with each other, you might be surprised at how rough they can be. As puppies grow older, they learn from their littermates and their mother how to restrain those playful bites. These lessons are important in the development of a well-mannered pet, which is why experts say puppies should stay with their littermates until at least the age of 7 weeks. When people end up with a pup who missed the crucial lessons taught by her siblings, or if a puppy is naturally nippy (many retrievers and retriever mixes, for example, are very mouthy as puppies), there are still ways to teach a youngster to stop biting. Address the problem from a couple of different direc-

Property owners in California can no longer demand that renters debark dogs or declaw cats in order to keep them in a rented home. The law was popular in the statehouse, passing the state Senate by a unanimous vote before getting the governors signature. The legislation has teeth, with a $1,000 fine for violations. It was the second attempt for the legislation: An earlier version had been vetoed by the previous governor. Most cat lovers have never been very interested in pedigrees: Plain ol domestic cats of all backgrounds, markings and coat lengths are by far the most popular. Lost dogs are found more often than cats. Overall, 71 percent of lost dogs were recovered, compared to only 53 percent of lost cats. The primary reasons given for the difference, according to a study in the AVMA journal: About 47 percent of missing dogs had identification on them, but only 14 percent of missing cats had any ID. across: Play stops when nipping starts. If youre persistent and consistent, your puppy will get the message. It will also help if you make sure shes getting plenty of exercise, because sometimes dogs who dont get enough physical activity get too excited when theyre finally offered the chance to play. If the behavior doesnt show any sign of easing, or if the biting seems more aggressive than playful, dont delay in asking your veterinarian for a referral to a behaviorist or trainer. Dont forget to praise her for chewing on something thats not a family member. Even as youre teaching the puppy what is OK to mouth, teach her how to leave family members unchewed by making the nipping unrewarding. Every time the puppy nips, dramatically cry ouch and immediately stop the play session. Fold your arms, turn away and ignore the puppy completely. The message to get

Dj Spotlight | deadmau5
Joel Zimmerman doesnt like being called a DJ. The 31-year-old dance music phenomenon from Toronto, better known as deadmau5, rolls his eyes at the description, which he sees as a hopelessly outdated way of describing what he does. His sets are closer to live performances. He plays mostly his own material, assembling tracks on the fly, using cutting edge computer technology, including software hes helped write himself. There are no CDs involved, he explains. Its a technological orgy up there and I try and keep it more my music than anyone elses. If people come out to see deadmau5 I want them to hear deadmau5 music. Hard to believe then that a few years ago, Zimmerman was all but unknown. He grew up in Niagara Falls, Ontario, 75 miles south east of Toronto. As a kid he was obsessed with computers. When he was 15 he started making chip tunes. Theyre musical compositions made using the chips from old computers, he explains. Fellow chip tune alumni include Jesse Keeler from MSTRKRFT, while hipster duo Crystal Castles are heavily influenced by the scene. When Zimmerman was 18, his chip tunes attracted the attention of the nu metal musicians in Los Angeles. At the time, artists such as Marilyn Mason were exploring a more electronic sound. Zimmerman ended up contributing to Mtley Cre drummer Tommy Lees 1999 rap metal album Methods Of Mayhem. Ten years later they remain friends as well as collaborators; last year they released two electro house singles Chicken and Redic under the name W.T.F.? Around the same time, Zimmerman became involved with a dance music radio show in Niagara Falls called The Party Revolution. It was a low-budget affair run by the local dance music record shop, Electrified Records. Back then, cutting edge dance music in Niagara Falls meant Babylon Zoo, he laughs. His job was technical whizz kid. In other words, he was the one who knew how to use a computer. All those guys were interested in was recording two turntables onto a computer and burning off a CD so they could send it the radio station, he explains. I over took them when it came to technology. I learnt about digital audio and making music on computers, new editing techniques. Every new bit of technology that was released to do with making music, I was on top of it, while they were still dinosauring it out playing on turntables. Zimmerman is still a technical whizz kid. While he was earning his dance music stripes, he worked as a web developer. Together with long-term collaborator Steve Duda, a programmer and studio engineer from Los Angeles whose CV includes Nine Inch Nails, Zimmerman writes music making software, including one of the programmes he uses in his live show; he describes it as like a drum sequencer and sample player on crack. From 2006 to 2007 he worked for Image Line, the Belgian company behind the Fruity Loops virtual studio programme, now known as FL Studios. Add to which, he helped write an iPhone app called Touch Mix, which allows you to mix tracks on your mobile. Hes not at the cutting edge of music technology so much as creating it. However, in the early 00s, when he tried to convince local recording studios that they needed to embrace computers, no one was interested. They had an old school approach to recording music. I was telling them, Youve got to get a PC. But the mullets as I call them, the proper studio engineers, were really in denial about that kind of thing. It was rocket science to them. They didnt get it. Zimmerman did. Eventually he managed to convince a small studio in Toronto to let him install new technology and he helped record numerous local bands. Zimmerman says that his dream at the time was to be a producer, working on other peoples music. He wrote his own material, IDM (intelligent dance music) like Aphex Twin, that kind of thing, but it was more a hobby, just very obscurely in the background, nothing to do with the kind of thing I make now.

Your Horoscope
Venus in Virgo is like a supermodel: willing to put in the hard work it takes to be beautiful. And just to make things interesting, Jupiter throws obstacles in the path to all Venus wants, making her work even more diligently for good results. The squared aspect between Venus and Jupiter will affect our sense of fulfillment across the board. The good part is that people enjoy and appreciate what they work hard to achieve. ARIES (March 21-April 19). There's a possibility that you know things that you couldn't possibly know, like the future and past of every living thing on the planet. Or maybe not. Rest assured, your quest for knowledge is anything but selfish. You see no point in learning if you can't share what you know with those who could use the information. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). The need to win at all times is a disease that robs people of pleasure and happiness. So you go into this week in a laid-back mood. Even though there is a prize dangling in the future, you understand that it's not going to satisfy you to get it unless you enjoy and feel good about the process. THIS WEEK'S BIRTHDAYS: All of your goals are aligned this year. You'll be where the action is for the next six weeks. In December, you'll find the most excitement as well as love, comfort and whatever else you need right at home. You'll have examples of success around you in January, some of which will come from dear friends. Be careful not to compare yourself with others. Competing with others makes enemies. And that makes finding what really makes you happy all the more gratifying. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). While some make the same mistakes over and over, you are mindful to learn from the past. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You've been bolder at other times in your life. This week you won't feel the strong need to put yourself out there. Don't worry that your reserve shows weakness or a lack of confidence. The opposite is true. You sense that you have much to learn, and you're wise to hang back and observe.

THE GOLF DOCTOR

By T.J. TOMASI
ITS GOOD FOR YOUR GAME

Is your stick stuck?

When Tiger Woods hits a bad shot on TV, the commentator often says, He got the club stuck behind him. What hes referring to is a sequence problem. Woods turns his hips too quickly on his downswing, and this makes it hard for his right elbow to get even with his back hip coming to the ball. This causes the club to approach impact so far behind his body that he cant square the clubface at impact. This is the better players mistake. ABOUT THE WRITER A higher-handicap Dr. T.J. Tomasi is a golfer often does teaching the opposite: In a professional in Port St. hurry to hit the Lucie, Fla. ball, the clubhead Visit his races ahead of the Web site at tjtomasi.com. body, a mistake thats called overthe-top. If the push-slice is your miss, youre probably stuck; if you pull-slice, then its probably over-the-top. When one of my students gets stuck, I ask him or her to swing with a soccer ball between the knees. The soccer ball quiets the hips, giving the player the feeling of making a lateral move before the hip rotation begins. This allows more time for the trail elbow to catch up with the hip.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Drills for skills: the two-club sync

If youre losing distance because one of your arms is overpowering the other, try the two-club drill to re-sync your arm swing. Take two clubs of similar length (such as your 7- and 8-irons) and assume your normal stance with one in each hand, keeping the two clubheads about 6 inches apart (one ahead of the other). Now swing back and through with both clubs, trying to maintain the 6-inch gap between them. Do this slowly at first. Because you wont have the move synced, its going to feel awkward, with the club shafts and heads clacking against each other at various points in the swing. However, with practice, youll be able to take full swings while keeping the 6-inch gap all the way. This drill allows you to feel the contribution of both arms, and it will give you a valuable insight into the synchronization between your arms and your body. The problem is that when you swing for real, your arms fight each other for control, and this kind of civil war creates power leaks of major proportions. Duplicating the balance between both arms into your regular swing should regain that lost distance.

This young ladys hips have rotated too soon, trapping the club behind her. Note how the elbow is way behind her right hip. Unless she flips her hands just right through impact, this shot will shoot to the right, into the trees.

Because hes compressing the ball with his thighs, this player wont be as likely to spin his hips to the left. The small lateral bump of the hips toward the target gives him plenty of time to slot the club correctly.

yourself into and sort of defying danger. As a driver, hes on the other side of the fence. I remember when coming to Talladega was fun, Gordon said. I really do, and I havent experienced that in a long, long time. I dont like coming here. I dont like the type of racing that I have to do.

The Big One

He said balancing the desires of fans and drivers puts NASCAR in a tough spot, but he does long for the earlier style of restrictor-plate racing. I dont have to be happy and be all excited about coming to Talladega ... but I do remember times when the draft, and the thought that you had to put into it, the strategy working the draft and the cars in the lines, was fun, he said. Instead he described the racing of the present as bumper cars at almost 200 miles per hour. I dont know anybody that likes that, he said. His Hendrick Motorsports teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. indicated he doesnt. If this is how we raced every week, I would find another job, he said. That is what the package is doing. Its really not racing. Kenseth had to recover from a mid-race incident in which he was knocked off the track to even be in contention at the end. He said theres no way for drivers to avoid big wrecks. As you saw today and youve seen a lot of times, there is no safe place, he said. His car owner Jack Roush said he expects to lose lots of equipment when the circuit visits Talladega and Daytona, the two tracks where restrictor plates are used to slow speeds but also lead to the kind of tactics that drivers generally loathe. This cars a write-off when you load it up in the truck to bring it to one of these restrictor-plate races, Roush said. The wrecks like those at Talladega also have a way of scrambling the points standings because drivers who wreck out early end up far behind in the points standings. For instance, Gordon, despite finishes of second, third and second in the past three races, is still 42 points out of the lead because of a crash in the Chase opener at Chicagoland. In the past three weeks, hes only gained five points on leader Brad Keselowski. Continues on page 31

he 24-car Big One crash on the last turn of the last lap at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday ramped up the debate about the kind of racing that goes on at the giant track these days. Despite NASCAR rules changes intended to eliminate it, drivers routinely push each other, since thats the fastest way around. That often leads to major melees, such as the one triggered Sunday when Tony Stewart, running at the front of the pack, cut in front of Michael Waltrip, who was fast closing with a push from the cars behind him. The two cars collided and Stewart ended up in the air, bouncing off oncoming cars, while Matt Kenseth sped away to victory. Jeff Gordon, who emerged from the mess to finish sec-

ond, said fans should love the slam-bang style of racing, and he doesnt understand why there still are plenty of empty seats at Talladega. The official attendance estimate was 88,000, the lowest in years. From an entertainment standpoint, they should be lined up out to the highway out there, Gordon said. That makes no sense to me. He said that if he was a fan, hed like to see a race like the one Sunday at Talladega. I want to see guys shoving one another, he said. I want to see the Big One at the end of the race, because guys are being so aggressive, and knowing that is not something that as a fan you could ever imagine putting

Busch makes last race in No. 51

Kurt Busch had an interesting ending to his time driving the No. 51 Chevrolet owned by James Finch. Busch ran with the leaders most of the day, and was out front when he ran out of fuel and was knocked off the track. Then he was parked

He said the incident doesnt surprise him. This is the way my life works, he said. I am leading, I wreck, I run out of gas, Im still that competitive guy that tried to get back in the race, and now NASCAR is yelling at me because I dont have my helmet on and Im trying to get it to the garage so the guys can work on it This is my life. Im not complaining I put myself in a lot of these situations, but its on to good things now moving forward. I got all the bad luck out of the way. This year has been a great year to test me in every way. Busch takes over the No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet this week at Charlotte, N.C., while its current driver, Regan Smith, gets into the No. 51 vacated by Busch.

I got out of the car and surveyed the damage, saw that it could still roll, so I jumped back in, Busch said. I remembered with these engines they will run at 20 percent of fuel pressure to get it back to the garage. So I tried like heck. Two top-tier Sprint Cup drivers had announcements on the sponsorship front last week. Tony Stewart revealed that Bass Pro Shops will join Mobil 1 as the primary cosponsor of his No. 14 Chevrolet beginning next season. Bass Pro Shops will be the main sponsor for 18 races, while Mobil 1 will be on the hood for 11 races, leaving nine races without primary sponsorship at this point. Stewart has had a relationship with Bass Pro Shops since 2001, beginning with

team since 2009. Bass Pro Shops has been the primary sponsor of the No. 1 Chevrolet driven by Jamie McMurray for car owner Chip Ganassi.

Also last week, AARP announced that it has extended its sponsorship of Jeff Gordons No. 24 Chevrolet at Hendrick Motorsports through the 2014 season. For the past two seasons, AARP has used its NASCAR involvement to promote its Drive to End Hunger program. The AARP says the program has led to the donation of 13 million meals for hungry older Americans and has raised more than $17 million. Its been a privilege to work with them and learn about such an important cause and the fact that they are really making an impact, Gordon said. I think from the beginning of this relationship, we knew its not going to happen in one year or even two years I think this is a great sign that momentum is still building and they know they need to continue to further that work. I love the fact that theyve chosen our team and Hendrick to do that.

Nissans Xterra continues to be the Real Deal

By Christopher A. Randazzo
Nissans Xterra makes no excuses. This is a truck based SUV that is meant to go offroad, and go off-road well. If you want an SUV with a smooth, car-like ride, there is no need to look at the Xterra and Nissan would gladly point you over to their car-based SUV, the Murano. But it you like to take a truck out in the mud, get it dirty and dont mind a few scratches, then the Xterra is right up your alley. Out since 2000, the Xterra has grown up over the years, but you would have a hard time knowing just by looking at it. Those initial years, Nissan aimed the Xterra at Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4 buyers, both car-based SUVs meant only for light off-road use. The truck-based Xterra, with its offroad styling and rugged bodyon-frame construction was the odd-ball of the bunch. The Xterra as we know it today came out in 2005. It uses the same platform that is also used by the Nissan Pathfinder and Armanda SUVs as well as the Titan full-size truck. With a longer wheelbase than the original, todays Xterra provides even better off-road performance. Throughout the years, its appearance has hardly changed and traditional styling cues have remained with the Xterra, like the unique roof-rack, and the bulge in the rear tailgate that shows you where the firstaid kit is located, even from the outside. The Xterra is powered by the same 4.0 liter V6 found in the Pathfinder. With 261 hp on tap, the Xterra never falls short on power. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard with a fivespeed automatic available as an option. The Xterra is still available in 2-wheel drive models or 4-wheel drive models. All Xterras are four-doors with the rear doors having their handles placed on the C-pillar a-la Nissan style. There are three trim levels to choose from the base X, which comes with the bare necessities inside like A/C and power accessories, but not much else. The mid-level S gets 16-inch alloy wheels and off-road tires and a nicer interior. Continues on next page

Talladega...
Continued from page 28 Still, hes not giving up on his bid for a fifth Cup title. Our team is doing a great job, he said. Weve been performing really, really well. We can sit there and really get mad about what happened in Chicago, but the reality of it is all we can do is go each and every week and keep trying to put ourselves in position to win and get top fives. It is certainly not over yet, he said. If we keep doing this, I really think we might have a shot at it.

Busch apologizes to Toyota

Kyle Busch issued an apology to the engine builders at Toyota Racing Development in the aftermath of his scathing criticism of the engine crew after he ran short of fuel and finished seventh after leading 302 of 400 laps at Dover International Speedway. Toyota officials expressed displeasure at Buschs remarks. His crew members explained that they chose to tune their car for speed instead of fuel efficiency, and the way the race played out Kyle Busch went against their strategy. I made some remarks out of frustration on my radio at the end of last weekends race in Dover that were very misguided, Busch said in his statement. I owe my friends at Toyota and TRD an apology. We have a great partnership with TRD, and they built me a motor that helped me lead over 300 laps and nearly lap the field. Its just frustrating that the caution fell where it did and suddenly it became a fuel mileage race and we were set up for maximum horsepower.

Nissans Xterra...
Continued from page 30...Then there is the Pro4X model which was what my tester was. Made for the off-road enthusiast, not only is it fourwheel drive, but also includes an electronic locking rear differential, hill-start assist, hill-descent control, skid plates, Bilstein shocks and a roofmounted off-road driving lights. There is even a tricked out cargo track system that keeps your gear in place even when the Xterra is upside down.

most Xterra owners may not put their vehicle to those extremes, its sure nice to know it can easily handle them.

Every year at the annual Texas AutoWriters Association Truck Rodeo, I am able to put the Xterra through the ringer. Driving through mud pits, into trenches, through streams and even doing some small rock climbing, the Xterra Pro4X handled every situation like a trooper. While By The Numbers:

On road, the Xterra doesnt let you forget you are in a real truck. The ride is on the rough side, but more noticeably is how solid the Xterra feels. After talking with some Xterra owners, they said that they preferred the rough ride it reminded them of what type of vehicle they were driving. I dont think everyone will agree with that, so if on-road driving is where you will be spending most of your time in an Xterra, make sure you can put up with the ride that it dishes out. There is no pampering in the cabin of the Xterra, but it does meet all your basic needs. Controls are of the manual type and are all simple and easy to use. The front seats are very comfortable offering plenty of legroom. In the rear you will find seating for three, although it can be a little tight. One thing rear passengers do get is a nice view of the terrain, thanks in part to Nissans unique stadium style seating. Over the years, the Xterra has really come of age. It also seems to becoming a dying breed. Just a few years ago the Xterras main competitors where the Hummer H3, Toyota FJ Cruiser and Jeep Wrangler. The H3 is long gone and I wouldnt be surprised to see the FJ Cruiser following in the Hummers trail, leaving just the Wrangler to compete with the Xterra. But even if the Xterra is a product from a bygone era, its nice to see that Nissan is still offering it, and at a reasonable price.
