Office Hours CDL Virtual Office: I will log into the course several times a day. Usually, I will log into the course around 9:00AM until 10:00PM (central time). I will try to stay away from the computer at least during the weekends. E-mail is my preference as the communication method and usually faster than voice mail. I generally respond to email messages within 24 hours of receipt; this may be longer if the email is sent between Friday evening and Monday morning. Also, you can make an appointment by email to speak to me at a mutually convenient time. Blackboard (Bb) Course Communication: Your instructor receives text communications only by email and has disabled t the communications messages feature for this course.You must use City Colleges of Chicago (CCC) email. Any email communication generated from the Blackboard course sites will be sent to your City Colleges of Chicago email address.

4. CATALOG DESCRIPTION
Computer Information Systems 122 WW: Introduction to Word

Processing on Microcomputers - This course will provide the students with the in-depth concepts of word processing as they apply to microcomputers in business and personal use. Laboratory assignments provide hands-on experience with microcomputer word processing software. Writing assignments, as appropriate to the discipline, are part of the course.

5. DELIVERY FORMAT
Web-Based Courses (WW): This course takes place completely on the Internet through the use of the Blackboard course management system (http://ccc.blackboard.com). You are required to purchase textbooks, workbooks, study guides, and/or software. Throughout the semester, you log on to the course website to gain access to course content, information, homework assignments, and communicate with me. Discussion forums and chat provide a high level of interaction between the class and me. You may be required to take exams online, in a proctored setting, at any one of the seven City Colleges of Chicago. Please note that some WW courses may also include mandatory on-campus sessions.

6. SYNCHRONOUS SESSIONS
On two separate days, minimum (e.g. once before the midterm and once after the midterm), we will meet as a class (i.e. all at the same time) using either Elluminate Live, Blackboard Chat, a face-to-face session in a CCC classroom, or something similar. Specific dates and times will be posted later, in the Announcements section of Blackboard. For those who are unable to participate, special arrangements will be made.

7. COURSE TERM 16 Weeks

CREDIT 3 credit hours Fall YEAR: 2012 All CDL courses are offered in a 16-week term in the fall and spring. CDL courses are offered in an 8-week term in the summer. Students register for these courses during the same period as regular term courses.
Class Schedule: This course is scheduled for 16 weeks. The Fall Term, 2012 class dates are from Monday, August 20, 2012 through Saturday, December 8, 2012. Please note the following exception: NOTE: Monday September 3, 2012, Labor Day and Thursday November 22-Friday November 23, 2012 Thanksgiving (Holiday- No assignments due or required examinations are set for this date).

8. PREREQUISITES
This course uses MS Office 2010. Students must have access to a computer loaded with a licensed copy of the software to take this course. CCC will not provide software. Students can purchase the MS Office 2010 professional edition for a student discount at http://www.journeyed.com/home.asp. Eligibility or completion of English 101 is strongly recommended before enrolling in any CDL Course.

*All students enrolled in CDL courses must use their CCC email address only. All CCC students have access to open computer labs which can be used to pursue a CDL course. TVW & WWW courses: Require access 5-6 days/week. System Requirements: Easy and frequent access to a computer with: Google Chrome or Internet Explorer 5.5 or later. 1.2 GHz or greater (Intel Pentium III, Celeron processors or Mac G4) Windows XP, Vista, 7 or Mac OS X 10.5 or higher 1 GB RAM or greater / 20 GB hard drive or larger Broadband Internet connection (DSL, cable modem, fiber, etc.) CD-ROM and sound card with speakers Internet (ISP) account / Internet Explorer 8.0, Firefox 4, Google Chrome 10 Latest version of Java

All users are strongly encouraged to use Internet Explorer Google Chrome i instead of any other browser.

10. COURSE OBJECTIVES


After completing this course, the student shall be able to: Use a computer effectively with practical knowledge of Windows 7 operating system; Understand the fundamentals of Microsoft Word 2010; Demonstrate an understanding of the in-depth concepts of word processing as it applies to business and personal use; Be able to study independently, and work in a distance education environment.

11. EXPECTED STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES


At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to apply basic to advanced Word skills: Create and edit a word document. Use wizards and templates to create specific documents. Format documents with margins, divide into sections, and add page breaks and page numbers. Insert and edit headers and footers. Format columns and insert clip art. Work with tables. Create a table; Insert, delete, and modify rows and columns. Split and merge cells. Perform calculations in tables. Use table AutoFormat and create a custom format for a table. Illustrate documents with graphics. Add, resize, and reposition graphics. Create text boxes, WordArt and Charts.

Create a simple Web page. Format with themes and illustrate with graphics. Add and modify hyperlinks. Master mail merge operations. Create a main document, design, enter and edit records in a data source. Add merge fields, merge data, create labels, sort and filter records. Create, modify and navigate multi-page documents. Add footnotes and endnotes. Generate a table of contents and an index. Work with master documents. Integrate a word document with Excel worksheet and Excel chart. Design and implement an online form with proper content controls, apply macros, protect and unprotect a document.

13. METHODS OF EVALUATION


There are several assignments for this course; the following table outlines each learning activity and its weight in the final course grade (tentative): Learning Activity Lab Assignments Description There are a number of In-the-Lab MS Word Grade (%) 40%

Projects assignments. Participation, Discussion, and etc. Students are required to participate in weekly discussion questions and reflections. Chapter quiz consists of multiple-choice and True/False questions. The midterm exam covers selected material (Chapter 1, 2, 3, & 4) from textbook. Minus 10% of your FINAL GRADE if you do not take the midterm exam The final exam covers selected material (Chapter 5, 6, 7, & 8) from textbook. Minus 10% of your FINAL GRADE if you do not take the Final examination Citation and References: You must cite your sources on any material that you choose to quote or reference. You must also cite your source on the articles that you present in your course papers. You can choose to use either MLA or APA style for citation and references, or you may use some other style.
