Introduction to ATIS
ATIS is a intelligent transportation system (its) application areas that implements emerging computer, communication, and information technologies to provide vital information to the users of a system regarding trafc regulation, route and location guidance, hazardous situations and safety advisory, and warning messages.

In ATIS a large bunch of geographical and traffic data are collected, stored, processed, analyzed, logically associated and graphically displayed by the help of geographical information system (GIS).ATIS may operate through information supplied entirely within the vehicle (autonomous system) or it can also use data supplied by the traffic management centers. The data from the traffic control center also assists the traveler through means of pre-trip planning and en-route information.

Technology used in ATIS

Wireless communications:Radio modem communication on UHF(Ultra high frequencies) & VHF(very high frequencies) Short-range communications Longer range communications (Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), or 3G) Computational technologies:Process control Artificial intelligence Ubiquitous computing Floating car data/floating cellular data:Triangulation Method (using Mobile Phones) Vehicle Re-Identification (using MAC (Machine Access Control), or toll tags) GPS Based Methods Sensing technologies:RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) Intelligent vehicle technologies Automatic number plate recognition Inductive loop detection Video vehicle detection/Roadside Camera Recognition

ATIS IN California
densely populated area with the population of 7 million people has as one of the best ATIS in U.S. Modal Components ATIS contains information as schedules, route maps, fares, announcements, and agency profiles. Construction closures and restrictions, incidents, cameras, traffic congestion map, both typical and current driving times between predefined points etc. on these modes of transport. Trains Buses Automobiles Bicycles Airplanes Ferries Shuttles Carpool/Vanpool Others

ATIS IN California
Trip Planning Capabilities Transit trip planning is available on the 511 web site and provides estimated travel time using various transit options as well as the walking time to/from transit stops, driving times between points on the traffic congestion map bike facilities enables passengers to get information before the trip and on route, Via E-mail, SMS alerts etc. Special event information in the traffic conditions map. In the event of a major emergency, provides emergency information quickly and simply while conserving system capacity.

Inferences Data quantity and quality are critical to a successful ATIS. Traveller information can improve but not eliminate traffic congestion Transit data quality and accuracy are a problem, especially for transit schedules and transit trip planner information

ATIS IN LONDON
approximately 7.5 million people in the Greater London area. transportation options. Modal Components: ATIS web site contains the information as Tube schedules, frequency of stops, journey times, route maps, fares, announcements, network status, historical performance reports, roadway map, cameras, road weather information, walking routes, user guide on the various modes of travel. modes such as Underground Rail, Over-ground Rail, Buses Automobiles, Bicycles, Airplanes, Ferries, Boats, Tram, taxis and minicabs. The traffic conditions map utilizes a Google/Tele-Atlas- base map. Trip Planning Capabilities: -. The trip planner provides estimated travel times using various travel mode options. The trip options can be sorted by trip length, number of transfers, or least amount of walking. Specific requirements/needs for the traveller along the route can be checked to personalize the trip to fit the needs. An interactive map with directions and guidance language also is provided for the route.

BUS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM (BRTS)

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is a term applied to a variety of public transportation systems using buses to provide faster, more efficient service than an ordinary bus line. India currently has a number of operational BRT systems and many more under construction. BRT systems exist in Pune, Ahmedabad, Jaipur and Delhi with segregated lane. And exist in Indore, Mumbai where they run on normal roads. But these buses are high capacity and thus government has characterized them as BRTs. Some of the important features are:1.Automatic Vehicle tracking system 2.Electronic Fare Collection 3.Real-time Passenger Information System 4.Traffic Management (ATCS)

BUS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM (BRTS)

Main objective of BRTS is to:Reducing the length of travel Reduce the automobile dependence Encourage more people on the public transit system Several technologies are used currently in India to make BRT system user friendly:L.E.D displays units to inform about arrival time, bus number, bus route, next station Real time traffic movements have been proposed on lines of U.S. and Europe Electronic ticket availability has also been provided There has been noted a significant increase in transit ridership in virtually all corridors where BRT has been implemented. BRT demonstrates relatively low capital costs per mile of investment. BRT systems are able to introduce higher operating efficiency and service productivity into for transit systems that incorporate them.

DEVELOPMENT OF ATIS IN INDIA

ATIS needs and features specific to INDIAN cities Need for robust, and low-cost, data collection techniques Understanding traveller and driver characteristics, needs and responses to ATIS applications Traffic modelling and forecasting of mixed traffic and network characteristics Integration of ATIS data, methodologies, and applications for deployment Shortcomings in India User response and requirements are ignored Inadequate data, and provides only shortest distance information which is static in nature Limited or no traffic prediction Network level opportunities are not fully tapped Dynamics is not considered Quality, timeliness, accuracy, and reliability are unknown Technical feasibility is demonstrated, but commercial viability is unknown

APPLICATION OF ATIS IN IIT BOMBAY: TUM-TUM LOCATOR

Need: Tum Tum is the principal means of public transport in IIT Bombay. The transport system often faces the problem of excessive or under usage. Due to lack of information about route, timing and schedule students face difficulty in commuting. Survey: Passenger load plan can be designed for each day of week using time table of students and their respective hostel location. For weekends data can be collected using in-campus survey. Technology: 1. GPS devices can be installed in tum-tum to identify its position at any particular time and LED display panels at bus stops so that to make students aware of exact position of bus at that particular time to estimate the arrival time and plan the trip accordingly. Special Features: It can be used to display time when the bus last arrived and number of buses on the way and during the peak hours e.g. (8:30, 12:30, 2:00 and 5:00) the frequency of the bus should be maximized using mathematical interpretation of the data.

CONCLUSION
development stages in India and promises a very bright future if applied properly increase efficiency, minimize the time lost in travel and goods transport, streamline the economy, encourage greater use of public transport. Problems like illiteracy, lack of civic sense can be overcome by simple application of technologies such as announcements at every bus stop, dynamic Messaging Boards, display of maps and simplified website. absence of adequate forecasting methods and decision-support methodologies. Strong need for conducting research on developing ATIS technologies and architectures for Indian roads due to differences in composition, multiple modes, mixed and lane-less traffic, and unique driver characteristics.
