THE CITY#THECITY#
Bratislava, nestles in the geographical
centre of Europe and spreads out along the
banks of the River Danube at the foot of
the dramatic Carpathian Mountains. After
decades of communist rule, Bratislava is
undergoing a cultural renaissance after
gaining independence in 1993.
Highlights include the charming baroque
old town, historic Gothic treasures,
classical cafes and an eclectic nightlife that
is considered some of the best in Europe.
The citys history as been forged by many
different nations and peoples including
Slovaks, Germans, Hungarians, and Jews.
Bratislava still retains its cosmopolitan
spirit. Bratislava Castle, originally built as a
frontier post for the Roman Empire in the
first century A.D sits at the heart of the
city. Bratislavas 11th century Gothic
cathedral is the spiritual heart of Slovakia
and is the best place to start to begin to
understand this countrys difficult past. On
the beautiful leafy squares, you can take in
the vibrant atmosphere of a country that is
confidently rediscovering itself again.

DO & SEE#DOANDSEE#
The river Danube divides the city decisively
between the old and new. On the north are
the quaint streets of the Old Town, the
Stare Mesto, with sights such as St
Martins cathedral, Bratislav Castle, St
Michaels Tower and the Primates Palace.
Linking the two sides of the river is the
huge Novy Most or SNP (Slovak National
Uprising) bridge, which has a restaurant at
the top offering incredible views of the city
and the Carpathian mountains in the
distance.
Bratislava Castle
When Bratislava was part of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire, the castle was
the centre of this extraordinary monarchy.
This fairy tale like giant box has a colourful
past. It was built by King Sigismund in the
15th century, again by Empress Maria
Theresa in the 18th century. In 1811, its
own garrison of Austrian soldier got drunk
and burned it down. It was restored by the
communists.
Today the castle houses the fascinating
Slovak National Museum. Go up its Crown
Tower, where you can enjoy spectacular
views of the southern Carpathian
mountains and Austria.
