June Monday 18 Tuesday 19 Dont let your bike get impounded! #UCSB Bike abatement begins TODAY! The CSOs will begin their bike abatement around the residence halls and campus today. If you are living in university owned housing, make sure you put a gold tag and zip tie on your bike so it doesnt get impounded. These tags can be picked up at the CSO Office, located in Lot 32. They can also be reached at 805-893-2433, Mon-Fri 12-3pm! If you work for us, your supervisor should have tags as well.
Curious about why this is necessary? Read on The UCSB Police Department is charged with the task of keeping bicycle racks clean around campus. Every year, as alumni graduate and move onto life after college, hundreds of bikes are left behind. These "abandoned" bicycles take up valuable rack space, as bicycle racks are a premium on campus. Community Service Officers (CSOs) continually tag bicycles, throughout the year, that are potentially abandoned with bright orange tape. At varies times throughout the yearusually during major breaks such as Winter Break or Summer Break-CSOs will tag and impound bicycles that: 1) appear to be abandoned, and 2) have been tagged by orange tape. All impounded bicycles are then brought to the Public Safety building for processing. These bicycles are held for a minimum of 90 days before they are transferred to PropertyRoom.com for online auctioning. During this time, CSOs attempt to make contact with the owners of the bicycles through the California bicycle registration system to ascertain whether or not the owners wish to exercise their ownership rights and their claim to the bicycle. The Bicycle Abatement Program is specifically charged with clearing racks on campus, around the residence halls, as well as Off-campus University owned housing. It is conducted in accordance with University policies as well as California laws. This abatement process ensures that our campus is not cluttered with rusty and abandoned bicycles and/or bicycle parts. This process helps maintain an adequate number of secure parking spaces for bicycles to lock to and thereby discourage bicycle theft. Questions regarding this program or any other CSO issues can be directed to CSO Coordinator Rob Crew at (805) 893-2325 or email him at: rob.crew@police.ucsb.edu

Turn it OFF when not in use (lights, stereos, computers, printers, TVs). Set your computer and monitor to sleep mode, or turn them off instead of using screen savers. Wednesday 22 Your Residence Hall Mailing Address & Information

Your mailing address will be provided in your room assignment and move-in information letter within the next few weeks. Mailing addresses differ and are based upon where you live and the carrier that is used. Each resident is assigned a mailbox in the Post Office located in the University Center (except for Santa Catalina residents, which have their mailboxes located near the Santa Catalina Lobby). Mailboxes are usually (but not always) shared between roommates. Any mail that is sent through the US Postal Service will be delivered to these boxes. If it is a large package being delivered, the Post Office will place a notification slip in your box that you can use to pick up the package at their window. Mail from private carriers will be delivered straight to your residence hall room and usually you or someone must be there to accept it. The front desk will not accept or hold any packages for you. If you are planning on ordering textbooks or other school supplies online, please hold off on having them delivered until you move-in, since the Postal Service is not in effect until Opening Day. Neither the University nor Housing & Residential Services has any space to store and hold your items. If you must ship items ahead of your arrival, try to do so as close to your move-in date as possible. Address the items to yourself, your hall, and room number. Ask the shipper to hold these articles pending your arrival at UCSB and arrange details. The shipper may charge you for holding items or may require you to personally pick up your items.

For many students the university experience includes academics, extracurricular activities, and at times also having a job. Are you thinking should I work throughout college? Will it interfere with my academics or enhance the quality of my education? Ultimately, the best decision regarding employment depends on the individual. It may be wise to experience at least one quarter at UCSB before seeking employment; however, some students may not find it difficult to work during their first quarter. National studies have found that students who work a reasonable number of hours per week (10-15) earn as good or better grade point averages than non-working students. Career Services provides an on-line service called Gaucholink for students who are seeking part-time or full-time work, as well as temporary, vacation and career-oriented positions. Monday 10 Cancelling your Res Hall Contract

Tuesday 11 (Triple Tip)

Wednesday 12 Maximize space! Loft your bed!

Many residents choose to loft their beds to make more space in their rooms. Beds will come un-lofted unless you are in a triple or small double. Triple and small double room furniture has been set up in the most space-efficient way and cannot be moved. You will need a rubber mallet to loft your bed. Some are available to check out at each front desk but we encourage you to bring your own in case there are none available.

Halloween Fun Fact

Halloween is thought to have originated around 4000 B.C., which means Halloween has been around for more than 6,000 years! Another fact that some of you may not consider fun: We have a no guest policy during Halloween in all of our communities. Every year there are serious environmental, physical, and fiscal implications that occur as a result of the high number of individuals that visit from out of town. We love our community and want to maintain the high level of respect we have for our home by not inviting guests from out of town. Youll hear more about this in the fall from your fellow Gauchos in Associated Students. In the meantime, enjoy the rest of your summer! (Just one week until move in starts!)

Cant Make it on your Move-in Day? If you cant make it to Move-In Weekend you can still move in your belongings after Opening Weekend. If you plan on checking in after Sunday, you will need to come in between 9AM 10PM, when the front desk of your hall will be open to assist you with check-in. Keep in mind that you must check in to the residence halls before Thursday, September 27th or you will be considered a no show. If you are going to be moving into the University Apartments and cant make it during Move-in Weekend, you will have to contact them directly at undergraduateapartments@housing.ucsb.ed u with your expected arrival date.

What size fridge can I bring with me? You can have a fridge no larger than 4.4 cubic feet in your room. Requesting Room Changes You can request a room change by contacting your Resident Director (appointments can be made with the front desk attendant of the residence hall). The Resident Director will give you options, upon availability. Those who live in Santa Catalina can request room changes through the General Office located adjacent to the Linda Vista Room. Room changes cannot be requested until the second week of every academic quarter.

Its almost Opening Weekend. Remember to leave pets at home! Move-in weekend is quickly approaching and were sure you are excited as ever! Move-in day is a memorable experience and we know you may want everyone to be there. You might be considering bringing your dogs along but we recommend otherwise. The day can be extremely busy and hectic so having to watch over a dog in addition to having to move into your room might not be the best idea. If it is absolutely necessary to bring your dog along, remember that pets, other than fish, are not allowed in the residence halls at any time. Although you are allowed to have dogs on campus, there are University policies for having dogs on campus that you must follow: http://www.policy.ucsb.edu/policies/policydocs/dogs.pdf

Plastic Water Bottles? Brita Filters? Not Necessary with Hydration Stations! Hydration Stations have been installed in almost all residence halls. You can bring your re-usable water bottle to the station to fill up on healthy, filtered water. As you fill up, the stations count the potential number of disposable plastic bottles being eliminated from our waste stream. The first Hydration Station was installed in Santa Cruz last November since they won the water savings contest the previous Spring. No more need for plastic bottles or filter pitchers! Just bring your re-usable bottle to one of our Hydration Stations, located by each front desk and at De Anza in Manzanita. Santa Catalina, yours is on the way

Friday 28
Start this year off with our AS Program Boards Welcome Back Concert!

Wellness Corps, they do a bunch of cool things like hikes or visits to areas around and on campus. http://wellness.sa.ucsb.edu/

The bike paths are the most popular way for students to get around at UCSB. Excited to get started on campus tomorrow? Give yourself plenty of time to get to class. The paths are jam-packed during the first few weeks since new students are still getting acclimated to campus. Bike traffic will be backed up and it isnt uncommon to observe a few accidents. Here are some tips to help your commute to class go as smoothly as possible: The campus has designated paths for a good reason. Skateboarders & pedestrians should keep off the bike paths at all times just like bicyclists should not ride on pathways. Skateboarders should use skateboarding lanes whenever possible. Not adhering to this can put people at risk of injury. Biking too slow creates traffic and biking too fast creates accidents. Be sure to ride at a good speed. Ride in single file on the right side of the bike path so faster riders can pass you on the left. Even if you are biking with friends, dont ride side by side. Not only will you annoy fellow Gauchos, riding this way will cause lots of traffic. Similar to this, riding with someone else on your bike can cause traffic and the extra weight makes this a dangerous way to ride. Park in designated bicycle racks and lock your frame and wheel to the rack to avoid getting your bicycle impounded or stolen.

Get a Job at the #UCSB On-Campus Job Fair!

To attend, head to Storke Plaza this Saturday the 29th! Doors open at 8:30PM, and the concert starts at 9:00PM. Remember you must be a UCSB student to attend, and you must have your access card to enter. To learn about upcoming events, or to see how you can be a part of this organization, check out their website at: Gauchos are LOCO for #UCSB Soccer! http://aspb.as.ucsb.edu/

Whos Excited for the First Day of School at #UCSB?

For new and returning students alike, the first day of school can be a little hectic and crazy. So here are a few tips from an experienced Gaucho to make sure you breeze through the first day, and the rest of this school year!

Looking for a job? Come to the On-Campus Job Fair co-hosted by RHA & Career Services! There will be campus departments & local businesses that are offering part-time and work-study positions. Departments include Arts & Lectures, Concessions, Daily Nexus, Financial Aid, Residential Operations, KCSB Radio, Recreation Sports, Adventure Programs & many more! The fair is tomorrow 9/25 from 9AM 12PM and will take place on the lawn between Santa Rosa and DLG dining commons. All students are welcome!

Find your classroom BEFORE your first class! The only thing worse than being late to class is not having a seat when you get there! In the first weeks of school there will be a lot of crashers (students who arent officially enrolled and attending to try to get a spot in the class) and in general very high attendance. Make sure you know where you are going, so when you go, you get there on time. Life Pro Tip: Lets say we have a class in room 2302. Well because it starts with a 2, we know it will likely be on the second floor. The 3 should imply it is in the 3rd wing of the building, and then it should be the 2nd classroom.

READ your syllabus! We cannot stress enough how important the class syllabus is to your success in the class. It literally holds the key to an A+ in any class. It should tell you what topics you are covering, at what time in the quarter. When the different tests are, and what topics they should be covering. Office hours of your professor and the teaching assistant to help answer any of your questions. Finally, it should shed light on the grading system, and any quirks that may be related to calculating your final grade. Life Pro Tip: The first thing you should do when you get your syllabus is look at the important dates (i.e. Midterms, Finals, Reports, etc) and mark them in your calendar or phone! Make note of it one week/day in advance too so you are never caught off guard!

Calling all Gauchos! The long-awaited start of the soccer season is here, and it is time to go Loco! Did you know we have a NCAA Division I champion soccer program? All First-Year Gauchos should go to the Residence Halls Associations (RHA) All-Loco Rally where everyone can get pumped up and ready with the help of the Gaucho Locos and Gaucho Cheerleaders! There will be music, face paint, cheers, snacks, and prizes. The Rally is this Friday, 5:30pm-6:45pm, on the San Nicolas/San Miguel Lawn. UCSB students (and Gaucho Locos) rally around our teams, especially men's soccer, national attendance leader in 2007 and 2008. The team made the final game in 2004, losing to Indiana on PKs, but rebounded in 2006 and won it all against interstate rival UCLA in St. Louis! Come support and help make this year another one to remember!

Get a PLANNER! You will find college is not like school you have had in the past. Instead of a nice tidy block of time where you go to class, college will have classes spread all throughout the day. It would not be unusual for your first class to be at 8am, and your last section to be at 7pm on a given day. This means there will be chunks of open time where you should PLAN to do something productive! If you get a planner, and then mark down your schedule and other commitments, you will be able to see the different chunks of free time you have, and how long they are. Make sure to fit time for lunch somewhere, time to study, and even time to just sit and relax. BUT, if you do not make these plans in advance, you may find yourself contemplating what to do, and then your free time is gone. Life pro tip: Based on your schedule and personal preference, pick a good work to fun ratio, and the make sure your schedule reflects that. Then when you have fun time allocated, HAVE FUN! One of the biggest problems in college is that people dont realize where the time went, or dont fully commit to relaxing or spending time with friends because they are worried about things due in the future. A planner can solve both these problems by first ensuring that you are following a preplanned schedule, and second by making it clear what it is you need to do at any specific time.

Make friends in your classes. Lets face it, how many times has there been a problem or question you have had about an assignment, where one short simple answer will solve the problem, but you have NO ONE TO ASK! In college, there are so many different classes and majors, that it is unlikely your roommate or neighbor will be taking the same classes as you. So you need to make sure to make friends in your class, and in your major, so that you have a support system established for all the bumps and turns along the way. Create study groups in one of the many available spaces we have on campus, and get together and solve problems! However, it is best if everyone already starts working before your meet up, so that questions are already formed, and people are already familiar with the topics at hand. Life Pro Tip: If you are in the same class as someone else, then you probably have a lot in common! Sit next to someone, and just say Hi! Ask a neighbor questions about lecture where you might need clarification. Remember that most people will want to meet others in their class, so be forward and make it happen!

Dealing with Homesickness Homesickness is actually quite common, especially when the shiny newness of college is starting to wear off and reality is setting in about your workload, exams, and other responsibilities. Try some of our tips to help alleviate your homesickness:

Thursday 4
What does the Front Desk have? One of the greatest resources you have while living in the residence halls here at UCSB is the front desk. There you will find a cornucopia of resources available for you to use on campus and in your home!

Friday 5
No More Dirty Clothes!

This may be one of the most frequent, and sometimes the hardest, question asked on campus. We think it shouldnt be your mind making the decision, but your tummy instead! Did you know that all of our dining commons have online menus available for all of their meals for the next two weeks!? By using this menu you can find out when Ortega is having their amazing pancake breakfast, what kind of delicious hearth made pizza Carrillo is making for lunch, or even how long you have to wait for the DLGs amazing BBQ dinner! We think if you want to maximize your pleasure here at UCSB, you should start with a delicious meal of your choice in one of our fantastic Dining Commons! Check out the Dining Commons Menus at this link: http://www.housing.ucsb.edu/dining/dining-menus.htm

All desks have a DVD collection where you can -Talk about your feelings with someone, from your roommate to your Resident Assistant: they have lots borrow DVDs for FREE. The complete DVD catalog should be available at the desk. of training and are available to you 24/7. -Call home. This may sound like common sense, but it can really help. The key factor, however, is not to call home all of the time. Once or twice a week is a good amount because it keeps you in the loop, but doesnt take away from your experience here. Keep the conversation positive. But if you miss your friends, family, or partner, giving them a call can sometimes help ease the heartache. -Go visit home on occasion. Visiting home can be a great way to recharge yourself and get some of that TLC (not to mention home cooking) that you need. But going home too often can frequently make homesickness worse. Let yourself go home when you need it, but make sure it doesnt turn into an every-weekend occurrence. Again, depending on the person, 1-3 times is a perfect amount. -Get out of your room. Its incredibly easy to hide in your room in college. But doing so prevents you from meeting new people, trying new things, and experiencing college life in general. Make sure you spend time out of your room even if its just at the UCen, in your floor lounge, or the library and get your mind on other things. -Attend your RAs programs! They are geared to both educate you and activate you in your community here and theres no better way to meet good people. The front desk has a ton of sports equipment you can check out like basketballs, tennis balls and rackets, soccer balls, cones, ping pong sets, pool sets, air hockey equipment and more! Finally, the best thing about the front desk is the desk attendant! Not only are they a valuable resource for all your questions, they are students just like you with advice and opinions on many topics, and also just great people to talk to in general! Make a stop by your front desk today and say hi!

Hey there Gauchos! Some of you may already need to do you laundry, while the rest of you will need to do it soon. Either way, we thought it would be a good idea to spread some information on how exactly everything should be done! You all should have received a WEB Access Card (which is different than your UCSB Access Card), and its sole purpose is to pay the laundry machines to clean your clothes. You will need to add money onto this card at one of the WEB stations located in your hall. These are usually by your Front Desk, but ask your front desk for help if you need to find them. Some machines accept only cash, and others will accept Debit/Credit Cards. Once you use then appropriate machine, then you can go to the laundry room and use both the washing and drying machines with the money you put on the card. If you lose your card, you can buy another one at the WEB Station. Life Pro Tip: To save energy, wash your clothes in Cold water! Actually this is better for your clothes too since warm and hot water causes your clothes to shrink and then stretch back out repeatedly, causing it to wear faster. Also, you can extend the time your clothes are in the dryer by charging it once, then removing the card, and then putting it back in to charge again. Some clothes do not get dry in 15 min, so you can put 30 min, 45 min, or however long you think it will take to get your clothes dry!

Similar to ASB back in high school, each halls council plans activities and programs for the entire building, purchases desk and recreation equipment, and represents the concerns of students in the building. Residents will be campaigning for the following positions: President Administrative Vice President Treasurer Activities Chair Athletic Chair Publicity Chair Webmaster NRHH/OTM Chair Multicultural Awareness Chair Recognition Chair Health and Wellness Chair Community Service Chair Environmental Awareness Programming Chair. Keep an eye out for campaigning in your hall over the next week and make sure to vote during Hall Council Elections (Dates?) Even if you arent running for a position, you can still be one of the Floor Senators and get involved, get to know your neighbors, and have a direct impact in your hall! Contact your RA if you are interested. Students living in University Apartments can also get involved through their community councils. Be sure to ask your RC for more details!

Wednesday 10 Confessions of an RA: We are students too!

Dont let the position fool you! While many RAs are very outgoing people trying to get you involved, many residents often dont take advantage of their role as a safe, comfortable space in their new home. Just visiting with your Resident Assistant can be a great way to talk about anything bugging you, or even learn something you didnt know about your campus community here at UCSB. Heres some tips on how to use your RA most positively: 1. Attend some of their programs! If it works out in your schedule, take a study break and go! They are guaranteed to either teach you something, get you noticed on your floor, or both! You are at UCSB to grow, and academics isnt the only path on your journeyBranch out. 2. Keep your door open! RAs are on the floor more often than you think; advertising or even just living where they work. 3. Get active in your building through Hall Council! Didnt turn in an intent-to-run form? You can still be a Floor Senator! Each floor needs 2 people minimum per week to attend the Hall Council meeting.

ADOPT-A-BLOCK HALLO-CLEAN TRASH CLEANUP

PLEASE NOTE: The information on this post is to educate students on their rights. It is not intended to be used as legal advice for any case. If you have additional questions, it is recommended to contact a lawyer. Can the police question people who are not under arrest? Yes, the police can stop anyone and ask questions without arresting the person. This can happen when police see suspicious activity. What Do You Do When Police Stop You?

If you or a friend has received a citation, seek legal advice from the Legal Resource Center (free for UCSB students only) at 6550 Pardall #B (around back and above Grafikart) or call 805893-4246. The best way to stay out of trouble this Halloween is to know how you can get in trouble. Having a good understanding of the laws means that you will be more aware if your actions may get you in trouble.

Prevent residue from the weekends materials from ending up in storm drains and eventually the ocean! Feel free to just drop in and help from as long as 30 mins of cleanup to five hours! Every little bit counts! Meet at the IV Rec & Parks District (961 Embarcadero Del Mar in IV) on that day to pick up the necessary supplies for trash cleanup. Groups who need community service can count these clean-ups. For more information call (805) 968-2017 ext. 24 or email cleaniv@ivparks.org. Dates and times coming soon!

Here is something you may not know:

Alcohol Possession by Minors (MIP): 25662 B&P

Ultimately you are the only person who can control what you choose to do tonight. We advocate, more than anything, that people who have the correct knowledge will make the right and appropriate decisions. For all of you that are planning on throwing a party tonight, read these tips to ensure a safe and fun party! http://lifeoftheparty.sa.ucsb.edu/PartyThrower/Tips.a spx Happy Halloween Everyone!

Be careful with what you say to the officer because anything you say can be used against you in the court of law. Do not argue, run away from or touch any of the police officers. Do not resist arrest. Do not make any statements about the incident. You have the right to remain silent and only provide your name and contact information. Be sure to note the badge number and name of the police officers. Ask for a lawyer as soon as you are arrested. Write the incident down, compile a witness list and consult a lawyer. If you feel your rights have been violated, file a written complaint with the police department and contact a lawyer.

Any person under the age of 21 years who has any alcoholic beverage in his or her possession, closed or open, on any street or highway or in any public place or in any place open to the public is guilty of a misdemeanor. From the Legal Resource Center (LRC): Most common questions about MIP involve the requirement that the student be in public with an alcoholic beverage. Public means a lot of things. It can mean being on a public street, being in a public place (like Giovannis or Deja Vu), being in a common area on private property that is open to public access (like a quad are or walkway to apartments), and being visible from a public vantage point (like sitting in a living room with the door open that faces the common area of the building, or on a balcony that is visible from the street). It can also mean being at a house party that is open to the public )open parties) even if you are inside the house and not visible from any public vantage point. An open party is treated the same as Giovannis or Deja Vu because it is open to the public. If something is open to the public that means the cops can enter, too. Second most common question is What if it wasnt mine? or What if I didnt drink from it? It doesnt matter. The law does not require it to be yours or for you to have drank from the container. The law requires that you are in possession, which leads to the third most common question. Possession means that the container of alcohol is within your area of control. It doesnt mean you literally have to be holding it (which is why some students receive citations even though they set the cup down on the ground or table near them). If you have a container with alcohol within your proximity that you could reasonably reach for, then you are in possession of it. If there is another person who is within the same distance from the container as you, then it is between the two of you as to who wants to take responsibility for the container. One of you will be cited, if not both.

What Happens If the Police Stop Me?

You can refuse to answer questions, but this can make the police suspicious about you. Police can pat you down if they suspect a weapon to protect themselves. If you feel you are under arrest, be sure and ask if you are. If you are, you have a right to know why. If you are taken to the police station, you have the right to remain silent and tell the police absolutely nothing except who you are. Ask to see a lawyer immediately. You are allowed one phone call to anyone and the police may not listen to it. Do not make excuses, bad-mouth or create stories with any of the police officers. It is important to contact a lawyer immediately, and if you cant afford one, you have the right to free legal services.
