India is a nation that has always been globally projected as one of the world s larg est democracies.

Closer home, if we look deeper into the system of our nation, v iolation of basic human rights is one of the worst problems India has had to dea l with since independence. Indian independence has often been accused of being ' independence for a particular class of people' and if we look at how basic human rights have been denied or violated for a majority of the population, such a st atement ought to be shamefully accepted. Many regions of India with high populat ions till today remain devoid of providing basic human rights to its citizens. A nother high number of instances of human rights violation (which is even worse t han the failure to provide rights in the first place) are on the newspapers and television everyday and we are well versed with human rights being violated on a daily basis. One of the major rights to be denied in our nation is the right to have a proper living as thirty one percent (officially) of the population lives below the certif ied level of poverty. If we take a break from statistics and government definitions of what poverty actually is, it is highly shameful that a large number of peopl e have to endure poverty and do not have the basic amenities to lead a proper li fe. The Right to livelihood is mentioned as a right entitled to every Indian citizen b ut sadly the truth differs from whatever is written on paper. A large section of the Indian populace suffers from the absence of food, toilet facilities and the right to lead a basic life which is humiliating enough for the government. This particular right to living must be provided at all costs and it is for the gove rnment to ensure and work towards development of the people, their living condit ions and providing their basic fundamental human right. The right to education is another premier human right that sadly has not been pr ovided to a majority of the Indian population, contributing to their miserable l iving conditions. Educated population is the benchmark of any nation s success but s adly that has not been the case for India. It must be ensured that this basic hu man right of getting proper education must not be violated anymore. Setting up o f schools in remote villages, encouraging parents to educate their children and enlightening them about the benefits of education, setting up of more institutio ns of higher education and facilities for students are what the government needs to do. We too must not neglect our right of being educated and take an initiati ve towards learning, for our own benefit and the nation s. The above mentioned two rights are two very basic human rights that have not bee n properly provided to the Indian populace. As mentioned earlier, it is the viol ation of rights that is worse than rights being denied and this is something we must pay proper attention and importance to. Violation of rights need not be res tricted to rural areas or a particular instance of a worker being denied of his rightful wage. Violation of human rights is being committed every day, from stre ets to homes, on men, women and children equally. These violations are a matter of high concern because they affect a variety of people and at the same time moc ks our government granting us certain basic human rights. So every time a woman is burnt for Dowry or a suspect tortured in custody in an inhuman manner, human rights granted to us by the government is being violated. The sole way to eradic ate such violations is to make people aware of such violations and make a stand. Dependence on the government will be a test of patience. Hence it is better for us to protest against human right violations, demand punishment for those at th e helm of human rights violation and create awareness about the fact that human rights violation is a crime. Eradicating human rights violations will not be sim pler, especially in a country as vast as India. But people must be aware of the rights that have been granted to them and how violating the rights can lead to d ire consequences. Prevention of human rights violation and punishment on violati ng them are the two P's (and keys) which are to determine the state of human rig hts in India in the near future.
