Project #1: Multi-Modal Literacy Narrative Part 3: Literacy Sponsor Analysis Instructions (Part 1 The Charts): Fill out the chart to describe a sponsor who has shaped your views of literacy. While you need to describe at least four sponsors, keep in mind that each sponsor should have their own chart. Also keep in mind that your responses should be detailed, and should be formulated as full sentences. Sponsor #1

1.) Identify the Sponsor: Your Response to Questions 1: The seventh grade book fair at Queens Grant Elementary School is my first sponsor. 2.) Making a Connection: Your Response to Questions 2: When I was in seventh grade I bought the book Iron Thunder by AVI and the book War Hoarse by Michael Morpurgo at the book fair and really enjoyed them both. Because of the seventh grade book fair I discovered that I really enjoy reading Historical Fiction especially when it comes to war and military things. 3.) Tracing Experiences: Your Response to Questions 3: I really enjoyed the book so I began to purchase other books by AVI as well as similar books by other authors like Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers. I actually began to read for fun on my spare time instead of just when I was on a road trip or before I went to bed. I became a lot more knowledgeable about the past wars and it actually made my AP US History class go by easier. 4.) Tracing Emotions: Your Response to Questions 4: My experiences with this sponsor are very happy/inspiring because the two books that I picked up at the book fair inspired me to further my reading of historical fiction and I really enjoyed it and it might have made me a little smarter which is a good thing. The fact that I was ahead of the game in my history class simply from reading was also encouraging.

5.) Ideologies of Literacy: Your Response to Questions 5: This sponsor influenced the way I look at literacy because it changed literacy because it helped me realize that literacy doesnt mean reading a boring textbook but something that I could do for fun while learning a little along the way.

Sponsor #2

6.) Identify the Sponsor: Your Response to Questions 1: My middle school writing tutor. I dont remember her name. 7.) Making a Connection: Your Response to Questions 2: In middle school I was forced to spend an hour after class with a writing tutor. She was very nice however I dont believe she helped me very much if at all. Still, my mom insisted that I see her because my writing was just that bad.

8.) Tracing Experiences: Your Response to Questions 3: I think one of the reasons I didnt like the tutoring very much is because I dont think I learned much. We always started writing projects but I dont recall finishing a single one of them. Because we didnt finish any projects, I can write a kick butt intro paragraph but I still write a terrible conclusion. Also I had to miss my lacrosse practice to do writing assignments so I wasnt really paying attention. 9.) Tracing Emotions: Your Response to Questions 4: The fact that I didnt learn very much was mostly discouraging. The reason being that I spent so much time working to improve something I wasnt good at but I didnt make any progress. It always makes me kind of mad when I am trying to write a conclusion but I cant come up with anything. 10.) Ideologies of Literacy: Your Response to Questions 5: This sponsor didnt excite me about literacy at all. She made me want to never write again. I still thought it was important to be smart and read and write I just didnt want to write and its all her fault.

Sponsor #3

11.) Identify the Sponsor: Your Response to Questions 1: My 10th and 11th grade English teacher, Amber Barton, is my third literacy sponsor.

12.) Making a Connection: Your Response to Questions 2: I got the same English teacher two years in a row and she made both reading and writing really fun.

13.) Tracing Experiences: Your Response to Questions 3: Whenever Miss. Barton read in class she would put a lot of inflection in the reading and she would use voices that the characters would use so it made reading very interesting. Sometimes she put too much into the reading and it caused her to pass out a few times. Also the books she assigned were very cool books and they werent boring. Also she showed us a very easy way to set up a research paper which really helped me put my ideas on paper in an order that actually made sense. 14.) Tracing Emotions: Your Response to Questions 4: The fact that Miss. Barton made an effort to make our reading fun was very encouraging. Also the writing breakthrough that I experienced while in her class was very happy and encouraging because I can now write semi decent papers and get good grades. 15.) Ideologies of Literacy: Your Response to Questions 5: This sponsor definitely changed my view of literacy when it came to writing because I had hated it previously to her class but it became much more bearable after her class. Now writing is much more important to me than it was in the past.

Sponsor #4

16.) Identify the Sponsor: Your Response to Questions 1: My third literacy sponsor is my family as a whole.

17.) Making a Connection: Your Response to Questions 2: My family has guided me through my entire life up until this point so it is only logical that they are a sponsor. Without them I may have strayed away from a scholarly path.

18.) Tracing Experiences: Your Response to Questions 3: Every single day of my life my mom has asked me if I have homework and if I need help on it. My mom and dad were both always available if I needed help on anything at all. They always encouraged me to get good grades and provided me and my friends with a place to study. I think it is because of them that I have done so well in school.

19.) Tracing Emotions: Your Response to Questions 4: The fact that I have a family that cares about my grades and my future makes me very happy as well as optimistic for the future because I know that they always will have my back. 20.) Ideologies of Literacy: Your Response to Questions 5: My family has been the primary mold of my view of literacy since I was old enough to speak. All of the views I have of literacy have been shaped by my family in some way. If I hadnt come from a family that cared about a literacy so much than I could be in a totally different situation right now which is actually kind of scary.

Project #1: Multi-Modal Literacy Narrative Part 3: Literacy Sponsor Analysis Instructions (Part 2 Reflection): Now that you have documented details about each sponsor, I want you to reflect on what you have learned. In the space below, compose a reflection in which you consider some of the following questions and compose a short reflective essay: Did you learn anything about how you learned to read and write that you did not know before? What ideas and beliefs about literacy stood out the most during this activity? Have your feelings about your sponsors remained the same over time, or have they changed? If you were to compare one literacy sponsor to another, do you find that the views and beliefs they have are in agreement with one another, or is there tension between beliefs and values? What was the most significant discovery that you made while completing this activity.
After completing the sponsor analysis I am actually able to pinpoint when I became so interested in Historical fiction. Prior to this I just assumed I had always enjoyed reading those books without giving it much thought. Also I never gave my family much credit for my literacy in the past but I now realize how important they have been to me. The belief that reading can be informative and fun is the belief that stood out the most to me when I was doing this activity because it is the one that kind of changed in an instant one day and has turned around the way I look at books. For the most part my feelings about my sponsors have remained the same over time except for the belief that my family has shaped my view on literacy since I was born. I used to think that I was the sole reason that I am a good student but now I realize that they shaped me into a good student. I think they are mostly in agreement except for my writing tutor. She made me take a step back from literacy because she was such an ineffective tutor. The rest of the sponsors made me cherish literacy even more. The most significant discovery that I made while doing this activity was the discovery of when I actually discovered that I like historical fiction books for the same reason mentioned above.
