Along a particular stretch of road in Singapore, two petrol stations, Schnell and Asso were having a price war. To reward customers, Schnell and Asso came out

with privilege cards giving the following benefits: Schnell Asso 8% off all petrol and an additional $1 off for every $20 on the final bill. 10% off all petrol and an additional 3% off the final bill.

Jerry holds privilege cards from both these stations. He was deciding which petrol station to patronize to save more money. He needed to pump 44.5 litres of petrol at (a)(i) (ii) (b) $1.84 per litre before the discount. Calculate his final petrol bill at Schnell; his final petrol bill at Asso and hence calculate his savings hence determine which station he should patronize. Solution : (a)(i) Petrol bill at Schnell after 8% off = (44.5 $1.84) (44.5 $1.84 0.08) = $75.3296 Final petrol bill at Schnell = $ ( 75.3296 3 ) = $ 72. 3296 $ 72.33 (a)(ii) Petrol bill at Asso after 10% off = (44.5 $1.84) (44.5 $1.84 0.1) = $73.692 Final petrol bill at Asso after 3% off final bill = $ ( 73.692 0.03 73.692 ) = $ 71. 48124 $ 71.48 Savings between the two petrol bills = $ (72.3296 71.48124 ) = $ 0.84836 $0.85.
