Howard poised to take lead in MEAC

LUT WILLIAMS There's perhaps no better story so far this year in black college football than the resurgence of Howard under second-year head coach Gary Harrell. The Bison are off to a 3-1 start, tied atop the MEAC with Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman with 2-0 marks, including a big overtime win three weeks ago over defending conference champion Norfolk State. Harrell, who starred as a 5-7 wide receiver and kick returner for the Bison from 1990-93 and went on to a short professional career before accepting a series of assistant coaching positions, posted a 5-6 record in his rst year at the helm. That was a big step forward for a program that had won just four games in the previous four years. This year, Harrell says the Bison, currently ranked fourth in the BCSP Top Ten, are looking for an MEAC title and they're playing like it. Remarkably, Harrell's squad has overcome intermittent losses of 14 players who were suspended by the NCAA from games over the rst month of the season for improper use of textbook allowances. Those suspended players have included senior linebacker Keith Pough, the 2011 conference tackles leader and preseason defensive player of the year, sophomore quarterback Greg McGhee, preseason all-MEAC rst teamer and last season's MEAC freshman of the year and senior running back Terrence Leffall, who rushed for nearly 900 yards last season. Pough has played in just three games while Leffall and

McGhee have seen action in just one. Nevertheless, the Bison have gotten standout performances from junior quarterback Randy Liggins and freshman QB Jamie Cunningham, who are both completing over 60% of their passes with no interceptions, junior safety Julien David, who had a game-saving interception vs. Morehouse and a blocked point-after attempt that was the difference in the 37-36 win vs. Norfolk State, and running backs Aquanious Freeman, who ran for 212 yards in last week's win over Savannah State - the third largest single-game total in Howard history and freshman William Parker, who is averaging six yards per carry in limited duty. One of the big hurdles in achieving the goal of an MEAC title is this week's 1 p.m. match-up at home at Greene Stadium vs. Florida A&M, the rst game the Bison will be playing with a full complement of players. Despite McGhee's full return this week, Harrell said on the MEAC Teleconference Tuesday that Liggins (21-34-0, 277 yards, 3 TDs, 80 rushing yards, 2 TDs) is playing too well so sit him down. The Rattlers (2-3, 2-0) will come in looking to avenge a 29-28 homecoming loss last year in Tallahassee that saw the Bison score 29 fourth-quarter points after trailing 21-0 thru three quarters. Howard will face a tough task shutting down FAMU sophomore quarterback Damien Fleming who has completed 83.3% of his passes (60 of 72) for 655 yards and ve TDs without an interception in the last two games. In other conference action in the MEAC, Bethune-Cookman (2-3, 2-0) has North Carolina A&T (2-3, 0-1) in for homecoming (4 p.m.), Delaware State (1-3, 0-1), coming off a bye-week, travels for a 1 p.m. date at Norfolk State (2-3, 0-2), Savannah State (0-4, 0-2) hosts Morgan State (2-2, 1-0) in a 7 p.m. start and South Carolina State (2-3, 1-1) and North Carolina Central (2-2, 1-0) meet in Indianapolis (2:30 p.m.) at the 29th Annual Circle City Classic. At 5-0 overall, 2-0 in the CIAA, BCSP No. 1 Winston-Salem State is rolling right along enterPASSING FANCY: Winston-Salem State QB Kameron Smith threw for 267 yards and four TDs in Saturday's 35-3 win over Bowie State. Smith is fth among black college passers averaging 249 passing yards per game (SEE STATS). He has thrown 13 TDs with just ve interceptions.

ing this week's 4 p.m. date on the road at homecoming vs. Johnson C. Smith (2-3, 1-1). WSSU is tied atop the CIAA South with surprising Livingstone (2-3, 2-0), who has run off two wins in a row after dropping its rst three. The Bears entertain Saint Augustine's (3-2, 1-1), who dropped its rst conference game last week to Elizabeth City State. Also in the South, Fayetteville State (1-4, 0-2) is at Shaw (2-3, 1-1). In the CIAA North, ECSU (3-2) and Chowan (3-2) are tied at the top with 2-0 marks. ECSU is at Virginia State (1-4, 0-2) while Chowan hosts Bowie State (3-2, 0-2). Lincoln (1-4, 1-1) plays at Virginia Union's (2-3, 0-2) homecoming. Alabama A&M (5-0, 3-0) is undefeated and atop the SWAC East Division. The Bulldogs travel to Itta Bena, Ms. for homecoming (2 p.m.) vs. Mississippi Valley State (1-3, 1-1). Jackson State (2-3, 2-1) is at West Division leader Arkansas-Pine Bluff (3-2, 2-1) in the SWAC-TV game of the week, resurgent Southern (2-2, 1-1) plays at Alcorn State (1-4, 1-2), Alabama State (3-2, 3-1) hosts Texas Southern (1-4, 1-2) and Grambling State (0-4, 0-3) and Prairie View A&M (0-5, 0-3) meet at the Dallas Cotton Bowl in the State Fair Classic (6 p.m.) on ESPNU. Defending SIAC champion Miles (4-1, 2-0) continued to roll with a dominating win over Benedict and now hosts Clark Atlanta (1-4, 1-2) for homecoming (4 p.m.) in Faireld, Ala. Saturday. Tuskegee (3-1, 2-0), looking more like the chief challenger to Miles in the SIAC West, tackles Morehouse (2-3, 1-1) at the 77th Morehouse-Skeege Classic in Columbus, Ga. (3 p.m). Fort Valley State (3-2, 2-1) is at homecoming vs. Kentucky State (1-3, 0-2), Benedict (0-5, 0-2) hosts Stillman (3-2, 2-0) and Albany State (2-3, 1-1) and Lane (2-3, 1-3) meet in Macon, Ga. for the Music City Classic.
