Up to 100 teams from around the world will be selected to go through to Round 2, so we recommend that you read this document carefully before submitting your Round 1 Questionnaire, to give your team the best possible chance of being among them. The evaluation structure and criteria have been developed in close consultation with Research & Technology, engineering and eco-efficiency experts from Airbus, as well as Human Resources and communications professionals. We hope that by participating in Fly Your Ideas, not only will you come up with great ideas to help shape the future of the aviation industry but you will also learn more about project and team work; skills which will serve you well in the future, whatever you decide to do next. To complete Round 1, you must; Complete both parts of the online Questionnaire. Please do this online via your team page on the Fly Your Ideas website, DO NOT submit any other version. What you need to do now

In this brief is the questionnaire, which your Team Leader should complete online and submit by the end of Round 1 (12.00 noon GMT on December 7 2012). This questionnaire contains 5 questions about your idea and 4 additional questions for background information, which will not be evaluated. Airbus Fly Your Ideas challenges students across the globe to develop new and innovative ideas to
th

shape the eco-efficient aviation industry of the future, meeting the needs of air transport in a sustainable way. For Fly Your Ideas 2013, Airbus is focusing on innovation, and would like students to propose an idea which addresses: Energy; Efficiency; Affordable Growth; Traffic Growth; Passenger Experience; or Community Friendliness. These have been identified by Airbus as the six key challenges of the 21st century for a sustainable aviation industry.

Energy
As traditional fossil based fuels become scarce and corresponding prices rise we encourage ideas for reducing energy consumption, increasing energy harvesting/recovery and for identifying sustainable sources of renewable energy that dont compete with food, land and water resources.

Efficiency
Aircraft with improved performance and reduced environmental impact are increasingly in demand. Therefore the aviation industry requires new ideas in areas such as enhanced aerodynamic performance, weight reduction, improved maintainability and reliability.

Affordable Growth
Growing demand to introduce new improved aircraft and service solutions into the air transport system requires that fleet replacement and upgrades need to be affordable. Therefore ideas for lower cost manufacturing processes, materials, equipment, operations and disposal must be developed.

Traffic Growth
In the next 15 years it is forecast that aviation passenger traffic will more than double placing strong pressure on the capacity of air transport systems. To support this demand we want to inspire innovative ideas to improve the management of aircraft missions, air traffic control and ground operations.

Passenger Experience
The traveller expects a seamless, comfortable and efficient travel experience with ready access to services and facilities throughout their journey. Ideas could therefore address the cabin of the future, as well as integrated transport systems or improved airport operations.

Community Friendliness
As airports are closely embedded in our cities, we must maintain a harmonious co-existence with local residents. Ideas identifying new approaches for reducing noise levels, improving air quality and easing ground traffic could be proposed.

Innovative ideas for an eco-efficient aviation industry of the future which are not covered by these six challenges are also welcome.

ROUND 1 QUESTIONNAIRE
The online Questionnaire can only be submitted by the Team Leader, and only one Questionnaire will be accepted per team. The Team Leader must submit the online Questionnaire provided in your team area of www.airbus-fyi.com. To access this area, you will already have received your own log-in details. Questionnaires sent by email will NOT be accepted. Entries must be in English, so take care to write your responses so that they can be understood. You will not be judged on the quality of your English, however poor English may prevent the Assessors from understanding the response and this could have an impact on your chance to be recommended for Round 2. Questions 1-5 have a maximum number of words for each response. The online form will not allow you to go beyond the maximum so check your replies in advance to ensure they are the right length. Assessors will not be given your team name or university name, and to maintain this anonymity please do not mention your university name anywhere in Part One of the Questionnaire. The Questionnaire, which MUST be completed by 12.00 noon GMT on December 7 2012, is as follows. To help you understand what Airbus assessors are looking for, we have included the key evaluation criteria in italics:

What will happen next?

Following the Round 1 deadline, which is 12 noon GMT on 7 December 2012, a team of Assessors will evaluate all of the entries. This evaluation process will be carried out as follows: The Assessors will review each entry according to the evaluation criteria mentioned in the Questionnaire and will recommend whether an entry should be selected for Round 2.
