Composition I Personal Narrative/Memoir Peer Review

Please take special care to complete each question for each group member; your fellow students need your outside perspective on the narratives content as well as the style in which it is written so that they can effectively revise. You are serving as another pair of eyes for your peers, so your suggestions are needed and will be welcome. Also, your credit for this assignment depends on how thoroughly you answer. One word answers or answers showing little to no thought will result in no credit. Please remember that we are at the revision stage of the writing process. Peer review addresses the Higher Order of Concerns (HOCs) such as structure, organization, theme, and audience among other things. If one or more of your peers Later/Lower Order of Concerns (LOCs) such as grammar and spelling need attention, please make a note for them to address those issues, but do not spend your time during peer review editing their work. 1. Who is the intended audience for this narrative? (Yes, we all know that the class will be reading these as will I, but who do you see this narrative speaking indirectly to? Imagine it is a book on the shelf of Barnes & Noble; describe the customer(s) who you feel would pick it up and buy it.) 2. What passages, themes, characters or tone lead you to define the audience as you did in Question #1? 3. What is the overall theme of the narrative? How do you know? 4. How soon into the narrative do you realize the overall theme? (Be specific.) 5. What is the overall tone of this narrative? (Give examples.) What passages lead you to that belief? 6. What passages show transition in tone, theme, etc? (Give examples.) How can they be clarified and/or improved? 7. Is dialogue used in this narrative? If so, is it effectively used? (Give examples.) If not, where do you see that it could be used? 8. Who are the main characters of this narrative? Are their roles clearly developed? (You probably dont know the people being discussed, so ask yourself if there are traits you need to know to better understand the characters and/or the story.) 9. In one sentence, what is this narratives theme? 10. In two words, what message does this narrative send? 11. If this narrative were to be made into a movie for television, what channel could you envision it being played on? Why? 12. Discuss the organization of this narrative. How could it be improved to improve clarity? 13. How does the conclusion tie together the theme and details of the narrative? 14. What encouraging words or thoughts can you leave for the author?
