Real Unemployment Reaches 20% In 7 Colorado Counties

September 28, 2012 By Tyler Sandberg

The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment has certified seven Colorado counties as having real unemployment reaching 20% DENVER The slowest economic recovery since World War II is going especially slow for sections of Colorado, according to a letter from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment (CDLE) obtained by The Colorado Observer. In seven counties in Colorado unemployed individuals are close to or exceeding 20% of the population, a letter from the Chief Economist of CDLE to the U.S. Department of Agriculture says. The letter, obtained through the Colorado Open Records Act, was sent August 29 as required by federal law. According to the Consolidated Farm and Rural Development Act, the Colorado Labor Department is required to certify counties where the Not Employed Rate surpasses 19.5%. The Not Employed Rate is defined as the percentage of individuals over the age of 18 who reside within the community and who are ready, willing and able to be employed but are unable to find employment as determined by the State Department of Labor. Ranking highest was Costilla County at 23.56 percent. The list runs from larger counties like Pueblo (20.09%), Montrose (20.62%) and Fremont (19.66%) to smaller populations like Huerfano (21.78%), Archuleta (19.97%) and Dolores (19.85%). Whereas the unemployment rate doesnt include people who are out of work, but have given up looking for a job, the Not Employed Rate gives a fuller picture of the dire economic situation many Coloradans are currently facing. Colorado has faced one of the slowest economic recoveries in the nation coming out of the recession. Last month, Colorados official unemployment rate 8.2% surpassed the national unemployment rate for first time in nearly 7 years. While unemployment fell from 8.3% the previous month, Colorados unemployment rate rose for four consecutive months prior to that. 1. zippy September 30, 2012 at 7:59 am Great photo from the 30s. Is that about the era that Rmoney is tryig to restore us to? Or is it more the Robber-Barron Gilded Age? Reply JustSayNoNow September 30, 2012 at 9:09 am Thats not the 30s. Thats Obamas economy today. Reply RufusVonDufus September 30, 2012 at 9:47 am People like you, zippy, are what is wrong with America today. You are probably one of those people who vote strictly party lines and have never given a thought to doing anything else. You have no ability with your limited brain to think about what might be or should have been, only what your union bosses tell you. So sad that people like you are contributing to the demise of our country. Reply wrongheifer September 30, 2012 at 10:54 am Obamas policies of spendy, shovel ready and greenLosing Colorado! Come on Romney-Ryan! Reply nuke um all September 30, 2012 at 11:21 pm I would rather have Obama than romney and his greedy skinny running mate that wants to take everyones social security away. Businessman does pay taxes guaranteed 10X more than you do. Gee if he were elected we would release restrictions on small biz, have a healthcare program that worked, everyone would probably pay taxes and we would once again gain respect from teh thrid rate dictators that basiclly piss on Obama and laugh. Reply mic September 30, 2012 at 10:05 am Well hard working business people and owners dont necessarily pay 10 times what the zippy obamabots pay in income taxes, because 10 times zero is still ZERO Reply BJ September 30, 2012 at 11:06 am We have a busines (no business) thanks to the current president. Were in Fremont County..no one comes in, no one can afford $20 evenwe cant stay open, but we cant sell a building no one can afford or wants at any price..maybe if we paid someone to take itthats about it. The Obamacare is rediculous and will close us down for good when it hits as well as most small business around us. Thanks Obama for ruining so many livesyou really want to help peopleRIGHT!!!! (not!) Reply G Crompton September 30, 2012 at 9:36 am Right on Comrade! Romney wants the serfs to have no jobs so that they are all reliant on the Govt. In those days, Unemployment compensation, SS Disability, Food Stamps did not exist. If not for those right now, youre boy would see riots in these streets that would pale in comparison as to whats happening in Europe and the middle east. RufusVonDufus September 30, 2012 at 9:53 am Milt, you forgot the half a billion dollars Obama wants to give to Morsi, the muslim president of Egypt, so he can buy some weapons with which to kill the infidelus! Everything else is right on! Reply 3. Milt September 30, 2012 at 8:20 am 43 months of unemployment above 8 percent, 8.2 million people working part-time who want full-time work, a record 88 million Americans not in the labor force, 1.5 percent GDP growth in the past quarter, more bad GDP numbers expected, a stagnant housing market, $5 trillion in new debt, the downgrading of the U.S. credit rating, 38 percent of Americans living paycheck to paycheck, 45 million Americans on food stamps, food prices continuing to increase dramatically, the poverty level likely to rise to the highest level in nearly fifty years The recession that ended three years ago this summer has been followed by the feeblest economic recovery since the Great Depression.. and this means the plan worked? The shine is off the Hope and Change, its now just Hype and Blame, so youll be going away come this November. Maybe you can get your old job back as a Community Organizer, best stick to something you know how to do. Reply 4. Milt September 30, 2012 at 8:21 am Here are some real world numbers of the past 3.5 years that the president cant spin: Women in poverty has skyrocketed to 17,000,000, up 800,000 7,500,000 women are in extreme poverty, 25% of Hispanic women are in poverty 2,500,000 women over 65 are in poverty Most of the job losses under Obama have been women (780,000), who have now left the workforce Official black unemployment rates are 14.4 (actually much higher) Official black youth unemployment rates are 40% Official Hispanic unemployment rates are 11 (actually much higher) American Blacks and Hispanics have been led down a dangerous path by the Pied Pipers of the left. Their only hope for a brighter future is to reject the new plantation bosses of the Democratic Party and to move to traditional American values and politics, which provide personal liberty and economic freedom for all. prices are skyrocketing and Obama does nothing to help the middle class. We are worse off since Obama took office. We must vote him out and give Romney a chance to turn this mess around. Reply 8. Just say'n September 30, 2012 at 9:20 am Before the dems took congress in 2006 1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high; 2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon; 3) The unemployment rate was 4.5%. Since voting in a Liberal Do Nothing Democratic Congress in 2006 we have seen: 1) Consumer confidence plummet; 2) The cost of regular gasoline soar to over $4.00 a gallon; 3) Unemployment is up to 9%, probably higher 4) American households have seen $4.3 trillion in equity value evaporate (stock and mutual fund losses) 5) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $3.2 trillion dollars Since Obama took over the radical Muslim Brotherhood has taken over the middle east, and we are sending the 450 million in egypt. Our cities are shooting gallaries. The urban poor have zero chance of ever getting a real job, and will live and die on welfare. Reply 9. NotFondOfLibs September 30, 2012 at 9:24 am The facts are in front of you Coloradans. The unemployment rate in your state and the rest of the nation is not going to improve as long as Barack Obama is President. Why? Because Obama does NOT care about the private sector. He even said so a couple of months ago when he stated, the private sector is doing fine. All Obama cares about are public sector jobs for Firemen, Teachers, and Policemen. If Obama is re-elected, it is going to be a long and miserable 4 years in this incompetent clowns 2nd term. Howl all you want Obama supporters, but thats what is going to happen. Out here on the Left Coast I see more and more newly homeless people after the first of each month (after being evicted from their rentals, I surmise) carrying what possesions they can in those rolling suitcases as if they were trying to catch a flight at an airport. September 30, 2012 at 10:32 am That is the idea. . . Very sad isnt it. For many of us to have actually seen how great this country and society once was. It will be over so quickly once the 2013 through 2016 agenda and tax rates go into effect. Part of the Bush tax cuts that will end will be the Earned Income credits and the rates that allowed so many to totally escape Federal Income Taxes. Wont that be a surprise to many of the Obozo supporters! Reply 17. G Crompton September 30, 2012 at 9:48 am This article, although linked to the Drudge Report, wont be read by most of you Coloradans. have allowed to happen. Talk to all you know and can find. Tell them we can be better than what we display presently on the world stage. Every election we hear that this is the most important election ever. Many time this is nothing better than a wonderful campaign slogan. This time it is a statement of fact and yes, it is that important. We saw what smoke and mirror promises came from faux snakeoil salesmen we elected to place their hands on the future of this country and guide it into the future. We have sold our souls, our future, our childrens future and the possible existence of America to foreign countries and ideologies. We each carry a band aid in our hands. We need to apply it when we enter the polls this election, for within each of us lies the responsibility to insure the continuation and success of what we have created so many years ago. Ken September 30, 2012 at 10:49 am I want my Bushphone Reply 32. The Last Plainsman September 30, 2012 at 10:50 am I spend alot of time cruizing the internet, reading alot of news sites. Heres the thing; just about everywhere I go, I read the comments section for most of the articles. I feel I am pretty balanced in what I take in. A great number of them, except for the hard left sites, everyone seems to be just seething about what a terrible President Obama is. How in the world can they be tied in the polls? I am not into conspiracy theories, think most of them are completely looney. But the more time I spend surfing, and reading the reactions from across the country, something strikes me as very wrong. Very, Very Wrong. I recently read an article in an English newspaper, the Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/journalists/philip-sherwell/9576153/Venezuelas-marathonman-looks-to-run-down-Chavez.html) and dear God, it looks just like what is happening here and now. Could there really be some sort of international group or association that is striving for world dominanace? I know I sound kinda of crazy but, you really need to read that article. Keep in mind that this is written by a foreign newspaper about a doubley foreign election and the situation is weirdly similar. Just something else to worry about on top of all else. Sorry if I killed anybodys Sunday. Reply 33. Lora September 30, 2012 at 10:53 am If the ecomomy was great whould it still be the Bush Economy? Just asking BTW, Resident Obama just gave a $20 million dollar tax payer funded loan to one of his campaign donors to build a car dealership in RUSSIA with nary a word from the media. Hey Colorado be sure to get out and vote this SOB out of office come November.

Take a look around you. This is obamas america. WITH 2yearsa of a super majority. Ask me how many budgets were passed during this time? Moron. Reply ByteRider September 30, 2012 at 10:44 pm Im with Troy on this one this is all on Obama and the Democrats. They had 2 years to do ANYTHING they wanted and they did. They spent money like drunken fools and danced away at Obamas Wednesday parties at the White House. While America fell, the Democrats played their fiddles Disgusting. This will come back to haunt them in unimaginable ways. Reply 36. Gungy September 30, 2012 at 10:07 pm So 7 counties in CO. basically look like what many California counties have looked like for a few years. Bur for some real strange reason, Colorado and California voters just love that Obama. Standards for president real low huh? The national debt no biggie. 26 million people years later still cant get a job. Oh well whatever. As long as the Bama*ites get them free phones, screw the country..right? Reply 37. OK BUT September 30, 2012 at 10:25 pm Ok so what are the real numbers at,you know using the U6 formula 30% 40%?I believe the state is around the 15% to 18% range in terms of actual unemployed.Just like inflation is only 1.8%. Reply 39. enoughAlready911 September 30, 2012 at 10:38 pm As impossible and crazy as it might seem I honestly believe we will be at full civil war by 2014 with an Obama win. I predict that he will further usurp the 3 branches by rolling in a large number of executive orders faster than the supreme court and congress can reverse them. Further, the dollar will accelerate its slide downward in value at a pace unprecedented in the US. Obama will feel confident(without another election) to unleash his dreams of his father which are anti-capitalist, anti-superpower and want to level the field(by reducing the USAs stature). Answer thiswhy has the Social Security Admin and NOAA ordered 1.2 Billion hollow point bullets THIS year? They never have any time before this. Ask why. Next why did Obama ask the military to prepare a plan earlier this year to squash national civil protests? Can you imagine the OUR military holding guns on OUR citizens? Obama obviously can. The election in Nov is a choice between removing Obama by the ballot or I fear removing him by force with unknown American lives lost. I know it seems like an impossible scenario but who thought the housing/banking collapse would happen? or unemployment would remain 8%+ for 4 years, WTC 911 attack, Egypt no longer an ally, US turning its back on Israel, Iran as a nuclear threat, Terror attacks in Libya which arent called terror attacks, media so lopsided that 60% do not believe anything they say, Atty General who doesnt arrest black panthers threatening voters by arrests a crappy film maker who dared make a stupid clip of Muhammad. A President who goes on The View instead of meeting with Israel who is preparing to

attack Iran. Or did you ever believe we would be $16,000,000,000,000 in debt(where a newborn is already $50k in debt on delivery)? Reply OK BUT September 30, 2012 at 10:47 pm Everything you say is in place,Question is what will be the trigger.Guarantee a lot of people will do the things you say not fully comprehending what is going on.I have been in a civil war,it is mostly chaos and the ideals people think they are fighting for while mabey clear in their minds are not the same as those running the show. Miguel September 30, 2012 at 11:22 pm Love to read the common sense of the good people of Colorado here. As a one-time California democrat, Ive seen out here just how much my former party has betrayed the American Worker, the American Common Man/Woman. In Sacramento, even in the fancy neighborhoods there are black holes in their upscale shopping centers. Ive seen whole shopping centers empty, (smaller ones) in Sacramento, home of the gerrymandered, ideologically hateful democrat legislators, many of whom have committed personal economic crimes against the people, as well as drunk driving, etc. I want to thank the people of Colorado whove spoken here, giving people like us out here in CA, home hope that there is relief on the way, from other states where common sense still prevails! Thank you Colorado! Reply 43. Inhurricane7 September 30, 2012 at 11:26 pm The better question is who will the 20% unemployed vote for: Romney or Obama? Why? Reply 44. jeff m September 30, 2012 at 11:31 pm Obama built that. Reply 45. maroon September 30, 2012 at 11:36 pm So what do you expect you dummies in Colarado? You elected a Democrap governor and the Democraps control the senate. If you people in Colorado havent learned your lesson yet, you deserve the hardships you are facing.. and will face if you re-elect Obama. Reply
