Course Introduction
Information Technology (IT) has made itself ubiquitous and with solid reasons. In the business arena it is being extensively used in business communication, operations management, decision making, accounting and various other management controls. The high productivity achieved from using IT has made the Management of Information System (MIS) a commodity in many a business sectors while there remain opportunities for competitive advantage by employing novel implementation. This course introduces students to the application of various business logics to transform data into information and to transform information into knowledge for management and control.
Course Objectives
The course identifies information system applications and possibilities, and their impact on business models and managerial decision making. Different types of systems are analyzed including their development and implementation. Major focus includes database management system, distributed systems, data communication and network, Internet and E-commerce, artificial intelligence, knowledge management, and the related applications. Privacy, security, social and ethical issues will be considered as well.
Teaching Approach
The course contains readings from textbooks, journals and various web-sources, class lectures, individual and group assignments, online quizzes and a term project. The group assignments and the term project will require group work including meetings, conducting research at various organizations, preparing reports and delivering presentation. A textbook is assigned for the course. The lectures will be delivered in English using PowerPoint slides (from the textbook and other sources). A course website is going to be used to provide participant with relevant information including course policies, guidelines, online quizzes and the related.
