Bright future for alternative energy

To encourage research on alternative energy and update the academe
on the needs of government and society, Department of Energy (DOE) Undersecretary Jose Layug Jr. recently delivered a lecture on campus about renewable energy in the country. Layug reported that the country has become a pioneer of renewable energy in Asia, with close to 38 percent of its total energy requirements coming from alternative sources. With the Philippines currently the second largest producer of geothermal energy, next to the US, it has dominated the countrys renewable energy portfolio. Layug presented government efforts that support production and use of alternative energy. The DOE campaign BIGSHOW (for Biomass, Geothermal, Solar, Hydropower, Ocean, and Wind energy), was launched to encourage the use of and investment to renewable energy. The country has created fiscal incentives for biofuel investors and supported research on alternatives to sugarcane, which is used to produce bioethanol. The challenge for the country is to continue to find ways to increase the production of renewable energy to avoid overreliance on energy resources that the country does not have.

Br. Rickys leadership experience includes a stint as Interim President of then-De La Salle Canlubang in 2006.
