What Goes around Comes around T

his summer, visitors to Whirlin Waters were good stewards of the environment. In fact, Whirlin Waters visitors composted over 14,000 pounds of waste by the end of July. How did they do it? By eating lunch at the parks Calypso Kitchen! Before opening for the season, the waterparks food service team converted all of its serving ware plates, napkins, cups, straws, and forks into compostable materials. Visitors who dined at the Calypso Kitchen placed these items and uneaten food in designated bins, which were taken to the Bees Ferry composting site by Food Waste Disposal, LLC, and then managed and monitored by Charleston County Environmental Management. Over time, these compostables will

break down into black gold, a nutrient rich soil additive. A portion of this material will be returned to Whirlin Waters for landscaping. Converting food and other items into a valuable compost product not only helps the environment by reclaiming a valuable resource, it also lengthens the landfills lifespan by taking up less space. Congratulations to all of the Whirlin Waters visitors who played a role in composting this summer. In twenty years, your family may be picnicking in the shade of a tree that grew through composting!
