CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Through the use of technology, the economy of the country is moving forward. Nowadays, most people are using computers to make their work easier and faster. Most jobs in the country involve use of computers because of their importance in the society. It is used to store, protect, process, transmit, manage and retrieve information. This implies that computers can also be like humans that have intelligence and can work. However, its intelligence is only artificial because it is just a machine so it still relies on humans to perform any task required. Grading is a great tool, faculty use to communicate with their students, colleges, and institutions, as well as exterior entities. Teachers have spent nearly every day of their teaching lives wrestling with the problems, the power, and the inconsistencies of the grading system. Through their personal experiences in the classroom and from various institutions at workshops around the country, effective grading presents suggestions for making classroom grading fairer, more time-efficient, and more beneficial to learning.

Every parent wants to brag that his or her child is a straight A student, at the top of his/her class, What generally verify this prized status? Grades Most often, report cards are the principal means of measuring a students progress through school. Doing well in school is measured by a series of letters on a piece of paper. But what do those letters really mean? And do they really do any good? Many researchers, educators and parents are now questioning the purpose and efficiency of grades. Certainly parents deserve to know how their children are doing

in school, and students benefit from understanding how they are performing; but how that development is communicated can have a great impact on how a student learns. Grading is the process by which a teacher evaluates student learning through classroom tests and assignments, the circumstance in which good teachers establish that procedure, and the conversation that surrounds grades and defines their meaning to various audiences. Grade serves four roles:

1. It evaluates the quality of a students work; 2. It communicates with the student, as well as employers, graduate schools, and others; 3. It motivates how the students study, what they focus on, and their involvement in the course; and 4. It organizes to mark transitions, bring closure, and focus effort for both students and teachers. This is the reason grade is so important for the assessment process principally.

Objectives of the Study A lot of parents are neither aware nor updated on their childs performance in school; they did not know the grades that their child had received. Usually, students do not want to show their grades to their parents or their parents live in a distance place that is why they do not have the chance to show their grades even if they like to do so. These are the main reason why they have created this research. And also there are some scholar students, which one of their requirements in order to continue their scalar ship is to pass the result of their grades. But their number one (1) problem they encounter during inquiring their grades is the late submission of their grades from their professors to the registrar in which they get their grades.

This study aims to help who always encounters the unwanted attitude of one of the staff in the registrars office when they are inquiring for their grades they can now check their grades online and also for the parents to be updated on their childs performance and to avoid children bluffs about their grades. It is not good to hear, but that is the reality. The ONLINE GRADE INQUIRY that we have designed is very user friendly that is why there is no reason for the parents to worry not to be able to use this just because they do not usually use computer and internet. General Objectives This study aims to develop an Online Grade Inquiry for Capiz State University Pontevedra Computer Department, Pontevedra Capiz. Specific objectives 1. To design an Online Grade Inquiry System that allows both parents and students

to access to the said system. 2. To design a system relative to the above that is easy to use for those parents who

are computer illiterate. 3. To design a system that is secured which cannot be modified or retrieved by

unauthorized person. 4. To design a system that will make the work of the registrar easy and accurate.

Significance of the Study

Parents this study is helpful for those parents who are in abroad or provinces. Registrar the one who receives and post the grades of the students from their instructor. Instructor computes the grade of the students. Students those who create their grade, totaled by their instructor. Grades the result of the students performance in school. Scope and Limitation This system will cover the students personal information at Capiz State University Pontevedra, Capiz. It will also include the grades of each Computer Students which is composed of the students year level course and grades. The system will only composed and/or included the user which will serve as the administrator.

CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE Grades viewer provides an electronic copy of the current term grades of a student. Certified True Copy should be requested from the Office of the College Registrar. According to smool Online Grade Inquiry system is a project for the fulfillment of our subject Evaluation of Business Process. The Purpose of this System is to view the students grade and its profile via online. And for the Teacher, it can add or edit grades for the students per section by their respective Subject. For the Admin it can add, edit, and delete students and teacher information. http://www.sourcecodester.com/php/3950/online-grade-inquiry.html

The students of Perpetual Help said that One of the online services we always use on our universitys official site (http://www.perpetualdalta.edu.ph: the official site of The University of Perpetual Help System Dalta in Las Pinas City) is their Online Grade Inquiry. Its far easier checking there than going to the school from time to time to see if they already have the students grades with their respective college advisers. Although the site says that the grades posted in the website may be incorrect or not updated and that its better to consult the officer in the registrars office for any questions or clarifications, we always find that my grades online and my grades in the official paper where our grades are written are always the same. And so we dont have any problem in trusting the online grade inquiry system. Once you have accessed your account (after providing your last name, your student number, and your correct birthday), not only can you view your grades online but you can also check out any pending balance in your account and other subjects you currently havent taken up yet. But the thing is, those two features are updated in real time. And because of that, we dont rely on checking the balance on my account using the online account. Wed rather go directly to the school. Last time we checked, our online account is showing a balance of P2, 000 (or $45) when in fact it has already been paid. But for us, the students of The University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, having the Online Grade Inquiry is really a great help

Gauging the Value of Online Grade Posting: An Inquiry into Full Disclosure- Michael Knievel, Texas Tech UniversityWith the continued development of the Internet, distance learning initiatives and Web-based mechanisms designed to support traditional classroom pedagogies are here to stay, and traditional notions of teaching are forever changed. Online colleges and universities like the University of Phoenix already boast burgeoning enrollments, as students flock to a curriculum that will gladly meet them on their own terms and in their own homes and offices. On the Web, teaching moves from brick and mortar classrooms with thirty students entering and leaving every hour, on the hour, to a compendium of synchronous and asynchronous experiences characterized by bulletin board posts, downloads, real-time chats, file transfers, and video and audio files. Web-based approaches to teaching writing and rhetoric are, generally speaking, multivalent, offering new and important capacities that surpass some of the dimensional and practical constraints of the traditional written page. Moreover, many of the practices common in Web-based pedagogy are well supported by theories of dialogism and negotiated learning, and those in the computers and composition community have long trumpeted these benefits. At the same time, however, online educational efforts rise in the long wake of the modernist narrative of production and efficiency, a narrative that has fostered the growth of technology to its present state, but one that has been called into question by postmodernists like Jean-Francois Lyotard, as well as members of both the technical communication community (Blyler, Katz, Selber)

CHAPTER III METHODOLOGY This chapter discusses the process model used in the design, development and implementation of the software project. It is also includes the activities undergone in each stage and depicts the software architectural design. The Waterfall Model Figure 1 shows the flow of the system. As mentioned by Sommeville (2011), waterfall model is the first published model of the software development process in which was derived from other engineering processes. This illustrated in figure 1. The model was known as the waterfall model or software life cycle because of the cascade from one phase to another.

Requirements and Analysis and definition

All possible requirements of the system to be developed are captured in this phase. Requirements are a set of functions and constraints that the end user (who will be using the system) expects from the system. The requirements are gathered from the end user at the start of the software development phase. These requirements are analyzed for their validity, and the possibility of incorporating the requirements in the system to be developed is also studied. Finally, a requirement specification document is created which serves the purpose of guideline for the next phase of the model.

In first phase in the design, development and implementation of the CapSU Pontevedra Online Grades Inquiry System, the team leader looked for the sample thesis wherein the design of the software will be patterned. The system Analysts on the one who analyze the current data processing on the said thesis, and conducts interviews. Onsite observation was also conducted as well as collection of all sample thesis and summary reports of all or selected thesis needed. The programmers focused on the database and interface design.

System and software design

Before starting the actual coding phase, it is highly important to understand the requirements of the end user and also have an idea of how should the end product looks like. The requirement specifications from the first phase are studied in this phase and a system design is prepared. System design helps in specifying hardware and system requirements and also helps in defining the overall system architecture. The system design specifications serve as an input for the next phase of the model. .

In these phase the systems design process partitions the requirements into software systems. The database design and data flow diagram of the system was drawn. The sketched of the entity-relationship diagram as shown in figure 3 depicts the logical design of the database and figures 5 shows the data flow of the software. The design serves as a guide during the development and implementation of the system. This includes the architecture of database in then system which are entity relationship diagram and entity relationship with attributes. Figure 2 illustrates a simplified entity relationship diagram database where all the records in the system are stored and managed. Entities are interrelated to one another in which the relationship is represented were represented by the line connected that links the entities.

Figure 2. Entity-Relationship diagram Implementation and Unit Testing The system is first developed in small programs called units, which are integrated in the next phase. Each unit is developed and tested for its functionality; this is referred to as unit testing. Unit testing mainly verifies if the modules/units meet their specifications.

Integration and System Testing As specified above, the system is first divided into units which are developed and tested for their functions. These units are integrated into a complete system during integration phase and tested to check if all modules/units coordinate with each other, and the system as a whole behaves as per the specifications. After successfully testing the software, it is delivered to the customer. Operations & Maintenance This phase of the model is virtually a never-ending phase. Generally, problems with the system developed (which are not found during the development life cycle) come up after its practical use starts, so the issues related to the system are solved after deployment of the system. Not all the problems come into picture directly but they arise from time to time and need to be solved; hence this process is referred to as maintenance.
