Time Days Room 10:00-11:15 Sunday, Wednesday JAMEEL CP07

Prerequisites/Co-requisite: MACT 231 Course Description: Course covers topics in linear algebra; topics include solutions of linear equations, matrices and determinants, the space Rn , vector spaces and subspaces, linear independence, basis and dimension, inner product and orthonormal bases, linear transformations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, diagonalization, and various applications. The course is 3 credit hours. Student Learning Objectives/Outcomes: 1. Given a system of linear equations, students will be able to apply the Gauss-Jordon algorithm to determine all solutions, and whether a solution is consistent or inconsistent. 2. Given denitions of set of objects with a well-dened addition and scalar multiplication, students will be able to evaluate whether this constitutes a Real vector Space. If valid, students will be able to demonstrate all axioms; if not, students will be able to give a counterexample to a vector space property. 3. Given a narrative description of an application problem, students will be able to select an appropriate matrix or vector technique to obtain a solution to the original problem. 4. Given a square matrix, students will be able to calculate its determinant, and deduce whether the matrix is invertible or singular. 5. Students will be able to follow a proof of a theorem as well as prove simple mathematical statements. 6. Students will be able to use mathematical software to perform matrix operations.

Textbook: Linear Algebra and Its Applications 4th Edition, 2012, David C. Lay, ISBN-13: 978-0321-62335-5, ISBN-10: 0-321-62335-5. Calculators: A scientic calculator might be helpful. However, graphing calculators, programmable calculators, or calculators with non-numeric display are NOT ALLOWED on quizzes or exams. Additional Resources: URL: http://blackboard.aucegypt.edu requires your AUC email credentials to logon. Once logged in, select this course. If successful, you will see a link to the complete syllabus, class announcements, assigned homework, and any additional course material. You can view your grades, use the email tool, or utilize the discussion tool to communicate with your classmates. You will receive a notice via blackboard (either an announcement, or an email) if there is additional information, exam date/location change, etc, or an urgent message, class canceled, etc, that directly impacts this course. The Mathematics Learning Center: Hours and locations will be announced at the beginning of the semester. Classroom Discipline: Any action that disturbs your classmates or interrupts the lecture is unacceptable. Such actions include: 1. Entering the classroom late 2. Leaving the classroom early without excuse 3. Cell phones, ringers, alarms, blackberries - turn them o! Grading: Mathematics Journal: 15%. This journal is submitted weekly on Wednesdays. Your journal must include all: 1. Homework assignments posted on blackboard. 2. A comprehensive summary of the material covered in class. You should read the textbook as well to write the summary and to help you choose examples of your own pertaining to the topics covered. 3. Three mini-projects assigned later during the semester. The rst one is due on September 23rd, the second on October 17th, and the third on November 14th. No late assignments accepted.

2 Midterms: 20% each. Each midterm will occur on a Tuesday at 12:00 pm. Location to be announced in class. Midterm 1: October 2nd Midterm 2: November 6th Comprehensive Final Exam: 30% Final Project: 15%. The project is due on December 5th. Letter Grade is guided by the following threshold table: Grade A AB+ B BC+ C CD+ D F % 95% 90% 87% 83% 80% 77% 73% 70% 65% 60% 0% The exam curves, however, may slightly vary to adjust for the relative diculties of the exams. Are there any make-up exams, extra credit assignments? There is NO extra credit. Also, there will be NO make-up exams or quizzes, unless the circumstances are extraordinary. Is there anything I need to know for exams and quizzes? 1) All exams and quizzes are closed books, closed notes, and closed colleagues. 2) You must SHOW ALL WORK on quizzes and exams. Unsupported answers are considered miracles and, while inspirational, will receive little or no credit. 3) Graded quizzes and exams will be returned to you as soon as possible. Chapters Covered (may not follow the same order as in the textbook): Chapter 1: Linear Equations in Linear Algebra Chapter 2: Matrix Algebra Chapter 3: Determinants Chapter 4: Vector Spaces Chapter 5: Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors Selected Topics from Chapters 6 and 7 (time permitting) 3
