COLLECTION OF THE NEEDS OF THE CHURCH IN CANADA: Since its foundation in 1943, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) has played an important role in helping the Church be present and involved, nationally and internationally. The CCCB is the countrys national assembly of the Catholic Bishops, including the Bishops of the Eastern Catholic Churches. It supports the Bishops in their pastoral ministry, in the fields of catechesis, interfaith relations, social justice, liturgy, doctrine, relations with Indigenous peoples, international aid and family life. The Collection for Needs of the Church in Canada will be held on September 29 and 30, 2012. Through your contribution to the Collection, you too can collaborate with the Bishops in their ministry to teach, sanctify and govern. The CCCB offices are located at 2500 Don Reid Drive, in Ottawa, where a staff of approximately 30 provides various services to help support the pastoral work of the Bishops in Canada.

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE YEAR OF FAITH?

n October 2011, Pope Benedict XVI declared that a "Year of Faith" would begin Oct. 11, 2012 and conclude on Nov. 24, 2013. October 11, the first day of the Year of Faith, is the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and also the 20th anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Locally, Bishop Mulhall will preside at an Opening Mass to be celebrated at St. Columbkille Cathedral at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 11 th,, 2012. All faithful of the diocese are invited to join Bishop Mulhall and priests of the diocese for this liturgy. Over the next few weeks we will examine some aspects of this "Year of Faith" The Year of Faith begins with a synod on new evangelization. What is a synod? A synod of bishops is a gathering of bishops, selected from different areas of the world, who meet with the pope to discuss questions pertaining to the activity of the church in the world. This meeting of bishops helps to foster a closer unity between the bishops and the pope, and provides counsel to the pope.
