Triumph of the Will, a German Nazi propaganda film from 1935. We will also look at some propaganda by both the Germans and the United States and try to determine what the main argument of the propaganda is. Assessments/Check for Understanding: Students will be creating their own piece of propaganda. Each student will be assigned a current world issue. They will draw these issues from a bag. Each slip of paper in the bag will have the issue that the student must create propaganda for, as well as a few important facts about the issue they have been assigned. On the backside of their propaganda poster, students will have to write a few sentences explaining what side of the issue their poster is arguing. Kony 2012: Campaign started by the Invisible Children Organization. The Invisible Children works to advocate for child slaves in Uganda, Africa who have been captured by a group which is led by Joseph Kony. Kony 2012 is a movement started by the group to capture Joseph Kony and bring justice for the child slaves. The group tries to spread the word about Kony 2012 through the internet, especially YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter, and asks volunteers to spread the word also by buying kits that provide one with everything they need to inform others about Kony 2012 (t-shirt, posters, stickers, information packets, stickers, bracelet). Joseph Kony has captured nearly 2 million children and created over 66,000 child soldiers Kony is considered one of the most dangerous men in the world. Only around 30% of the money donated goes to help the people of Uganda. Around 70% of the donations go towards making videos, travel for employees, and other efforts to promote the cause. Daily Monitor, a Ugandan newspaper reported that 10,000 Ugandans protested after seeing the Kony2012 video because they were not happy with the content. The Ugandan people are afraid those in charge of Kony 2012 are trying to make money and not help the cause. Police fired teargas into the crowd, and one officer was injured.

Barack Obama: He is the current President of the United States, and he is running for reelection in the fall of 2012. He is a member of the democratic party, and was previously an Illinois State Senator. Obama would like every American to have equal access to health care, no matter how much money they make. This means that everyone will have healthcare, but some will have to pay more than others to have it. During Obamas presidency, his administration has added $4 trillion of debt to the national deficit. As Commander in Chief, Obama and the troops were able to capture Osama bin Laden. During the last 6 months of 2011, over 850,000 jobs were created in the United States.

Mitt Romney: Romney is the former governor of Massachusetts. He is also one of the richest men in America. He is running in the 2012 Presidential Election as a Republican candidate. Romneys campaign is best known for its strong economic policies. Plans to make $500 billion in budget cuts every year to get rid of some of the United States national debt. Mitt Romney supports run rights. He plans to increase and maintain gun rights for hunters and sport shooters. He respects the right of every household to own guns. While he was governor in Massachusetts, Mitt Romney supported and passed laws that made all students in the state take a rigorous exam that students must pass in order to graduate. In order to keep illegal immigrants from Mexico out of the United States, Romney wants to complete a high-tech fence and add more people to the border patrol.

Obamacare: Obamacare is President Obamas plan to reform the US healthcare system. Under this system, all people will receive equal access to healthcare. Patients who would otherwise be unable to afford healthcare services will be able to be insured. Some citizens debate whether or not universal healthcare is constitutional because the US Constitution does not currently require or promise healthcare to all US citizens. Many Americans are worried about how the US will pay for universal healthcare. Some are worried that in order to give healthcare to everyone, the United States will have to raise taxes Countries like England and Canada already use similar healthcare methods that give everyone the right to be treated.

Going Green: Over the last five years, the United States has been taking national action to promote green behaviors including recycling, creating less waste, and using green alternative products. By going green, we hope to decrease the effects of global warming. Some believe that global warming is a myth. These people believe that the earth has always gone through periods of warming and cooling. They believe we are currently going through a natural warming cycle. The US has recently been heavily involved in recycling and using less waste. One way to do that is through using green products like reusable coffee mugs, tote bags, and energy saving light bulbs. Some critics believe that going green products do not help the environment any more than normal products do because green products are still made and sold in large numbers. By eating less meat, you are going green because meat takes a lot more energy waste to butcher and store than fruits and vegetables do. One way you can help create less waste is by burrowing items instead of buying new ones.
