Before Beginning

Before Beginning
It is recommended to use the LigoWave Link Calculator to estimate link possibilities (it can be found on LigoWave website http://www.ligowave.com/linkcalc/):

Main Link calculator features: LigoWave Link calculator estimates PTP location, antenna heights and gains, foliage depth, rain rate, frequency, polarization. Actually this tool computes the signal propagation according to the particular area. Thermal fade margin shows what the signal spare was before connectivity is lost. It is calculated as difference between received signal level at the input and receivers threshold expressed in dBm (TFM = RSL TH). Its recommended to have thermal fade margin value: For frequencies below 10 GHz ->10 dBm For frequencies above 10 GHz -> 15 dBm Download test report

Access PTP Unit

The default administrator login settings for PTP unit are: IP address: 192.168.2.66 Login: admin Password: admin01 To access the PTP unit Web management interface, configure your PC with a static IP address on the 192.168.2.0 subnet with mask 255.255.255.0. Open the Web browser and type the default IP address of the PTP unit https://192.168.2.66/ and the login page will be loaded. Enter default administrator login settings:

It is recommended to change default login credentials asap.

Before Start PTP Link Configuration

Step 1. Change IP addresses of the devices:

Step 2.

Specify other optional system settings (Configuration -> System): link name, location, coordinates, login password, time. If WNMS system is be used, then is recommended to specify the coordinates on the device for graphical representation on the Google map.

Link Setup

Link Setup
Initial Data Selection
Step 1. Perform the Site survey at the both ends of PTP link and choose the least occupied frequency.

Step 2.

Choose the relevant operating channel width: 20 MHz channel width max 100 Mbps better receiver sensitivity less environment noise 40 MHz channel width max 180 Mbps

If there is no need for high data throughput it is recommended to use a 20 MHz channel as PTP link units will interfere less with other devices and therefore the PTP link will be more robust.

Link Setup

Master Configuration
Set operating mode as Master for one PTP unit:

Specify the following mandatory settings for the master: Define Link ID Select your Country code Choose the least occupied Frequency Select Channel width Enable Encryption if necessary Set ACK timeout (specify the distance of the link). This parameter is for firmware version 6.5x only.

All other settings leave with default values.

Slave Configuration
Set operating mode as Slave for other PTP unit:

Specify following mandatory settings for the Slave: Select Country code Define Link ID Choose Channel width Define Encryption if necessary Set ACK timeout (specify the distance of the link). This parameter is for firmware version 6.5x only.

All other settings leave with default values. The Slave unit will choose the frequency automatically after the Master unit will be found.

Link Status
After the both units of the PTP link are configured and the link is established, verify the PTP link quality - check the Signal Indicator bar located at the bottom of the web management interface:

Signal strength is displayed on both units: master and slave. Local signal signal strength, received from remote unit (master in our case) Remote signal signal strength received by remote unit from local PTP (slave in our case) Two indicators stands for two streams: 2 transmit and 2 receive (MIMO)

Recommended Signal Levels

The recommendation for signal level range is from -35 to -60. Stronger signal level (less negative than -35) may impact to signal stability Weaker signal level (more negative than -60) may not be able to clearly transmit on highest data rate/modulation (300 Mbps)

Signal level may be impacted by noise of environment. RSSI parameter evaluates the noise level too (see next slide).

Adjusting Signal Levels

Follow the steps for signal level improvement: Step 1. Configure transmit power at both sides (Configuration -> Radio):

Step 2.

For maximum signal quality, run the Antenna Alignment tool and align PTP units until the maximum RSSI visible on the Antenna Alignment graph is achieved

RSSI evaluates signal level and environment noise. RSSI = Signal level Noise level. Normal RSSI level range is: from 35 to 60.

Optimize Data Rate
This is for firmware version 6.5x only.

Follow the steps to select optimal Data rate: Step 1. Use the Link test (Tools -> Link test) on both PTP units (master and slave) to measure throughput with different Data rates: 1. Select middle data rate (120 Mbps) and execute the Link test. 2. Select higher data rate (e.g.180 Mbps) and execute the Link test again 3. Compare the link test results: if the results are better, increase data rate. If worse decrease data rate. 4. Thus way find the best throughput according to data rate

Step 2.

If the environment is very noisy, select Multipath protection which increases the time between OFDM symbols. This may let achieve the better throughput even with a little bit lower data rate.

Optimize Latency
This is for firmware version 6.5x only.

The latency impact on the throughput thus is important to optimize this parameter for best link performance. Follow the steps to optimize packet latency: Step 1. Ping between both units and check the latency. In case results do not meet your expectations, refer to the Step2.

Step 2.

Specify following parameters on PTP units: Set RX frame timeout, ms to 1 on master Set Data accumulate, frames to 1 on master and slave Set Data accumulate timeout, ms to 1 on master and slave

Step 3.

Measure the latency between the PTP units:

Link Tuning for Firmware Version 6.7x

Link Tuning for Firmware Version 6.7x

Follow the steps to optimize link performance: Step 1. Choose the proper Data rate on the PTP units. The following procedure must be done on the both devices (master and slave): 1. First navigate to the Graphs page, select W-JET frames data rate and reset the results. 2. Execute the Link test (Tools -> Link test), then back to the Graphs page and check the results: If graph shows up a lot of frames at lower data rates (modulations), this means that there are huge amount of fallbacks. This is not good situation. If graph shows up a small amount of frames at lower data rates, this is good and Data rate may be probably increased.

3. Reset graph results, decrease or increase the data rate and execute Link test again. Examine the results. 4. Continue decreasing or increasing data rate unless the best performance is reached, observing Link test results. Graph shall look like on the slide above.

Step 2.

Choose optimal W-JET parameters. Navigate Configuration -> Radio page:

WJET parameter Transmit queue length defines maximum allowed aggregated packed block over the air. It is recommended to define the same value on Master and Slave. Default value 64 is good for most cases. The graph W-JET frame accumulation shows up the accumulated frames count. Depending on traffic type and traffic amount, it can vary. If there is a small count of transmission for big accumulated packet blocks, Transmit queue length may be reduced. If it is a high interference on the air, big accumulated packet blocks may be limited to 32 or 16. It is not recommended to decrease the Transmit queue length below 8, because this significantly reduces the throughput.

Link Tuning for Firmware Version 6.7x

PTP link latency is about 1 ms with default parameters and doesnt require additional tuning. RX frame timeout is calculated automatically according to other parameters changes. It is not recommended to change it.

W-JET frame accumulation graph results:

Enable Required Services

Enable Required Services

The additional services must be enabled on the PTP unit for proper operation: Enable SNMP service if you want to gather various statistics via SNMP protocol Enable WNMS agent (includes SNMP) to enable the devices monitoring and management on the WNMS server There is possibility to enable built-in Alerts that will send notifications of unexpected system behavior via SNMP trap or e-mail.

Refer to the LigoPTP MIMO User Guide for detailed information on required services configuration.
