Introduction:
We live in a world of information. In the past 100 years our ability to communicate, to travel, Webmasters Make Money
and our very way of life has all speed up rapidly. This much change in society requires a culture
that is capable of changing quickly and getting rid of outdated traditions. But information is
nothing without a learning theory, events have no meaning without interpretation. There is no
longer an excuse for being ingorant. Whatever problems in your life may exist can be cured with
the proper application of information. Finally, I'd like to thank all the posters at www.totse.com
for their contributions. If posted by someone other than myself credit is given in ()'s after the

and confirm every link, so I copy and pasted those. Enjoy.

"FOR LOW-RISK PEOPLE, A POSITIVE RESULT FROM AN HIV TEST IS WRONG HALF THE TIME
Although a lot of progress has been made in improving the length and quality of life for people
with AIDS, getting a positive result from an HIV test must still rank as one of the worst pieces of
news a person can get. It's not uncommon for people to kill themselves right after hearing the
results, and those who don't commit suicide surely go through all kinds of mental anguish. But
the accuracy of these tests is lower than generally believed. In fact, if you test positive but you're
not a member of a high-risk group (such as non-monogamous gay men and intravenous drug
http://www.totse.com/community/showthread.php?t=1988092 Page 18 of 63
Knowledge Thread 3 - Community 1/16/09 12:36 PM
users), the odds are 50-50 that you actually have the virus.
To be declared HIV-positive, your blood goes through three tests — two ELISA tests and one
more sensitive and costly Western Blot test. Makers of the tests trumpet a 99.99 percent
accuracy rate when all three are used. Many AIDS counselors even tell people that the tests
never give a false positive (that is, the tests don't indicate that someone is HIV-positive when he
or she really
isn't). The test manufacturers' claim is misleading, and the counselors' claim is flat-out BS.
Cognitive scientist Gerd Gigerenzer — who specializes in risk and uncertainty — explains the
reality in plain English: Imagine 10,000 men who are not in any known risk category. One is
infected (base rate) and will test positive with practical certainty (sensitivity). Of the 9,999 men
who are not infected, another one will also test positive (false positive rate). So we can expect
that two men will test positive. Out of these two men, only one actually carries the virus. So, if
you're a low-risk man who tests positive, the chances are even — the same as a coin flip — that
the result is right. It's highly advisable that you take the tests again (and again). The results are
even less reliable for women in low-risk groups, since they have a still lower rate of HIV. Of
course, this doesn't apply to an HIV-negative result. If you test negative, the odds are
overwhelmingly good (9,998 out of 9,999) that this is correct. It also doesn't hold for people in
high-risk categories. For example, if we accept the estimate that 1.5 percent of gay men are
HIVpositive, this means that out of every 10,000, an average of 150 are infected. An HIV test will
almost surely pick up on all 150, and out of the remaining 9,850 uninfected men, one will
incorrectly be labeled positive. This means that only one out of 151 gay men will be falsely
diagnosed as having HIV A false positive is thus still possible but much more unlikely.""

"The Dutch AIDS researcher Jaap Goudsmit argues that this same kind of dramatic
transformation happened with HIV. Goudsmit's work focuses on what is known as Pneumocystis
Carinii pneumonia, or PCP. All of us carry the bacterium in our bodies, probably since birth or
immediately thereafter. In most of us it is harmless. Our immune systems keep it in check easily.
But if something, such as HIV, wipes out our immune system, it becomes so uncontrollable that
it can cause a deadly form of pnuemonia. PCP is so common among AIDS patients, in fact, that it
has come to be seen as an almost certain indication of the presence of the virus. What Goudsmit
did was go back in the medical literature and look for cases of PCP, and what he found is quite
chilling. Just after World War II, beginning in the Baltic port city of Danzig and spreading through
central Europe, there was an epidemic of PCP that claimed the lives of thousands of small
children. Houdsmit has analyzed one of the towns hit hardest by the PCP epidemic, the mining
town of Heerlen in the Dutch province of Limburg. Heerlen had a training hospital for midwives
called the Kweekschool voor Vroedvrouwen, a single unit of which - the so-called Swedish
barrack - was used in the 1950's as a special ward for underweight or premature infants.
Between June 1955 and July 1958, 81 infants in the Swedish barrack came down with PCP and
24 died. Goudsmit thinks that this was an early HIV epidemic, and that somehow the virus got
into the hospital, and was spread from child to child by then, apparently common, practice of
using the same needles over and over again for blood transfusions or injections of antibiotics. He
Writes:
"Most likely at least one adult - probably a coal miner from Poland, Czechoslovakia, or Italy -
brought the virus to Limburg. This one adult could have died from AIDS with little notice…. He
could have transmitted the virus to his wife and offspring. His infected wife (or girlfriend) could
have given birth in a Swedish barracks to a child who was HIV infected but seemingly healthy.
Unsterilized needles and syringes could have spread the virus from child to child."
The truly strange thing about this story, of course, is that not all of the children died. Only a
third did. The others did what today would seem almost impossible. They defeated HIV, purged
it from their bodies, and went on to live healthy lives. In other words, the strains of HIV that
were circulating back in the 1950's were a lot different from the strains of HIV that circulate
today. They were every bit as contagious. But they were weak enough that most people - even
small children - were able to fight them off and survive them." The Tipping Point by Malcolm
Gladwell, pages 22-24

In his classic “biographies” of fictional characters (Tarzan Alive and Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic
Life), Hugo- and Nebula-award winning author Philip José Farmer introduced the Wold Newton
family, a collection of heroes and villains whose family-tree includes Sherlock Holmes, Fu
Manchu, Philip Marlowe, and James Bond http://www.pjfarmer.com/woldnewton/Pulp.htm
Since most of the contributors -- professionals and fans alike -- to the Wold Newton Universe are
English-speaking, it is not surprising that very few characters from the vast field of French
popular fiction have found their way there -- two notable exceptions being Jules Verne's Captain
Nemo and Maurice Leblanc's Arsene Lupin. The purpose of this site is to remedy this, and bring
into the Wold Newton Universe a gallery of new characters, easily the equals of Holmes, Tarzan
or Doc Savage. http://www.coolfrenchcomics.com/wnu1.htm

lib-web-cats is a directory of libraries worldwide. While the majority of the current listings are in
North America, the numbers of libraries represented in other parts of the globe is growing. Each
listing includes links to the library's website and online catalog. Other information available
includes the geographic location, address, library type, current and previous library automation
systems used, and the size of the library's collection.

Prelinger Archives was founded in 1983 by Rick Prelinger in New York City. Over the next twenty
years, it grew into a collection of over 48,000 "ephemeral" (advertising, educational, industrial,
and amateur) films. In 2002, the film collection was acquired by the Library of Congress, Motion
Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division. Prelinger Archives remains in existence,
holding approximately 4,000 titles on videotape and a smaller collection of film materials
acquired subsequent to the Library of Congress transaction. Its goal remains to collect, preserve,
and facilitate access to films of historic significance that haven't been collected elsewhere.
Included are films produced by and for many hundreds of important US corporations, nonprofit
organizations, trade associations, community and interest groups, and educational institutions.
Getty Images represents the collection for stock footage sale, and some 2,000 key titles are
available here. The collection currently contains over 10% of the total production of ephemeral
films between 1927 and 1987, and it may be the most complete and varied collection in
existence of films from these poorly preserved genres. Downloads for Ipod,PSP,MPEG,etc.

Highlights of the people's history of San Francisco are featured in these short video clips: footage
from just after the 1906 Quake, views of the 1917 Ironworkers Strike, Mayor Rossi's speech

and a look at a 1991 Anti-war Demonstration are just a few of the many eclectic pieces that

The Media Burn Archive contains a unique collection of 3,000 non-fiction videotapes reflecting
historical, political and social reality as seen by independent producers from 1972 to 2002. It
supplies a major dose of American studies, media history and electronic literacy. You are invited
to enjoy this small selection of films from the Media Burn Independent Video Archive!

The AV Geeks Film Archive is an ephemeral film collection curated by Skip Elsheimer. What
started as a hobby more than ten years is now a lifetime commitment. His collection has grown
to over 18,000 films gathered from school auctions, thrift stores, closets and dumpsters. He
presents themed film shows in his home base of Raleigh, North Carolina and he's taken his
shows on the road across the United States. Films from Skip's archive have been released on
DVDs. For more information about AV Geeks upcoming shows, the DVDs, stock footage inquiries
and donating to the collection, visit http://www.avgeeks.com. Skip is happy to be able share
these selected films from his collection online - giving them a life beyond their intended purpose
as little cultural time capsules of our immediate past. Enjoy!

Watch classic animated cartoons from the 1930's and 1940's! These cartoons are from the Film
Chest collection, a leading source of film and video programming and stock footage. All these
cartoons have been transferred from original 35 film prints and digitally remastered. The
collection includes classics such as Bugs Bunny, Woody Woodpecker, Popeye, Porky Pig, The
Three Stooges, and others. http://www.archive.org/details/classic_cartoons
Commonly called "LEGO Movies," Brick Films are dedicated to the art of stop motion animation.
The focus of these films is the animation of plastic building toys, or bricks (including LEGO, Mega
Bloks, Best-Lock, and more). Many of these films are also available on the Brick Films website.

http://lrnj.com/ Download the program it teaches you Hiragana and Katakana syllabaries in a
quick amount of time. It also will teach 200 Kanji characters. http://web.uvic.ca/kanji-gold/ Kanji
Gold is a program that organizes the Kanji systematically according to how Japanese kids learn
it, and it has most of what you'll want. http://www.physics.ucla.edu/~grosenth/jwpce.html If you
get a J-PenPal you might not be able to install the IME for win2000 systems, so this is a Word
Processor that basically allows you to type in Japanese, it also has a nice Kanji feature lookup
ability. (I mean I used to just download the MS Mincho Font and use character map to try and
find the symbols of Kanji I needed very inefficient)
http://www.thejapanesepage2.com/kanji/junban.htm Shows basic Kanji Stroke order. I don't use
it much but some say it may help in memmorizing Kanji. (I just try to memmorize em first.)
Windows Media Player Radio can play Japanese stations (thoguh sometimes it doesn't work)
