Natalie Johnson Collection Development Plan FRIT 7134 Spring 2012 (Dr.

Stephanie Jones) February 19, 2012

DESCRIPTION OF SITE AND LEARNERS The school that I am employed at is Walter P. Jones Elementary School, which is located in Macon, Georgia. Macon, Georgia is located about an hour south of Atlanta. Walter P. Jones Elementary School is one out of twenty-five elementary schools in Bibb County. In this school district, there are seven middle schools and seven high schools. Currently at Walter P. Jones Elementary School, there are approximately 433 students enrolled. About 77% of students who live in the community near the school qualify to receive free and reduced lunch services. There are 30 certified teachers (including an instructional coach, performance learning coach, and a family engagement facilitator), 1 administrator, and 14 classified staff members. The media center is located at the back of the school; it is viewable from the front door entrance. Also, the media center has about 10 computers used for research, internet browsing, and Accelerated Reader Testing, two storage rooms with 5 LCD Projectors, a Promethean Board, 20 newly purchased iPads, and other materials. The media center also has a media room used for the production and broadcasting of the daily school news. The school has two computer labs, which house about 30 computers in each lab, and both are used for enrichment software. (i.e. Study Island, Success Maker) Macon, Georgia is located in Bibb County, which is considered a part of middle Georgia. Bibb County has a population of an estimated 155,547. Bibb County was founded on December 9, 1822 and Macon was founded in December of 1823. The county was named after Dr.

William Wyatt Bibb who was a physician from Elbert County. Dr. Bibb went on to serve in the United States Senate and the House of Representatives before becoming the first elected governor of Alabama. Counties that are adjacent to Bibb County include Jones County, Monroe County, Twiggs County, Houston County, Peach County and Crawford County. Approximate populations are as follows: forty-three percent of the population is white, fifty-two percent is black or African-American, one percent is Asian and two percent is Hispanic. The remaining percentages less than one percent are Native Hawaiian and American Indian. The median household income is $38,798. A great feature in Macon, Georgia is the Ocmulgee National Monument where they preserve evidence of 17,000 years of human habilitation. Tourists are able to walk among mounds and villages that were developed long ago. The school district serves approximately 25,000 students. In the district, 73% of the students are African American, 21% are white, 3% are Hispanic, 2% are Asian and 1% is multi-racial. The top three employers in this community are: There are three 5th grade teachers and one music teacher at Walter P. Jones Elementary School. There are two EIP classrooms that are used for individual and group sessions. There are a total of 69 students in this grade level. The music teacher sees all students. The ethnic breakdown is as follows: African American: 67 White: 0 Multi-racial: 2 Hispanic: 0 Asian: 0

The reading level of each of the students varies. There are two students are a part of the gifted program. The sixteen EIP students are helped by a resource teacher who gives the students extra help. Not only does this resource teacher help with 5 th grade, but also with lower grades. CURRICULUM REVIEW For this assignment, I have chosen to focus on musicians, genres of music, etc. As a general music teacher, I teach all grades and a variety of standards. I have chosen to focus on 5th grade students. Whether its reading and notating music or moving alone and with others, students work on more than one standard. There are always a few standards that I never get a chance to get around to. The following standards are addressed within this subject: M5GM.9 Understanding music in relation to history and culture a. Perform, listen, move and/or distinguish between music from various historical periods and cultures from the Civil War to present (e.g., jazz, musical theater, rock-n-roll, country, gospel, new age, rap, heavy metal, pop). b. Describe the role of music and musicians in various historical time periods.

COLLECTION REVIEW The first thing I did for the collection review was complete a search for books. I used the media centers cataloging system, Spectrum, to find books related to the topic. Our media center is very outdated; from some of the books to the cataloging system. I used two quantitative techniques: I counted the number of titles in the specific subject area (music) and counted how may were in each individual collection (i.e. fiction, biography, reference). When I searched, I used keywords like music and musicians. Using the keyword music, there were a total of 42 items in our media center surrounding the subject of music. To further break that down, this is what is in each collection: Biography-7, Easy-18, Fiction-5, Nonfiction-4, Sound recording-3, Video-4, and Reference-1. There were not any multicultural resources regarding music. The two qualitative techniques I used were measuring the formats of materials of user preference and user opinion. Recognizing that there were more easy books about music, it seemed as though this was more preferred. I honestly was shocked at the amount of resources available about music. Evidently a previous music teacher was not concerned about the amount of resources available about music. One of the books, which was a biography, dated back to 1972 on a 6th grade reading level. I knew when I saw this that not many students have touched this book. Most of the easy books ranged on a 2nd to 3rd grade reading level while biographies and nonfiction books ranged on a 4th to 8th grade reading level. The biography section of the media center needs love! Most of the biographies about musicians were not upto-date; no recent musicians were found. This is why I have addressed this situation within my budget plan. The condition of the materials was fair. Most of the books were in fair to good condition. The majority of the books are older.

The total number of books within our media centers collection is 10, 325. The total number of books relating to the topic of music is 42 items. This year, there has been a total of 6 items checked out, which have been checkout by me! So, the music collection needs more books that will get the attention of students. I have addressed this issue within my budget plan. Summary of the collection needs: 1. Informational books about recent musicians 2. Video and/or listening resources relating to music and genres of music 3. More books relating to the topic of music 4. Choose some reference materials related to music BUDGET SUMMARY I thoroughly researched items related to the topic of music, musicians, and genres of music. I believe that I have developed to very good list of books and video materials that would make the collection a lot better. To complete the order, I would need to spend $3, 997.85. Items relating to the topic include biographies of recent musicians (i.e. jazz artists, pop singers, rock n roll artists, hip-hop artists), video materials describing different genres of music (i.e. jazz, rap, blues, pop, bluegrass, classical), and reference materials about musicians. I have added resourceful websites to my wiki page (http://njohnson4.pbworks.com/w/page/51082918/Resourceful%20Websites%20on%20Music %2C%20Musicians%2C%20and%20Genres%20of%20Music). I attempted to address as many aspects of music as I could with a book, video materials, websites, and/or a reference book. Please see the Excel spreadsheet for specific titles.
