s in United States history and describe their Corresponding Common Core Essential Standard: Impact on the land and people of the nation and its neighboring countries Objective 4.05 & 4.06 For my literature circle book I read Pink and Say which was written by Patricia Polacco. This book gave an amazing account of the bond between two young soldiers who were different races and from different backgrounds. It was a very inspiring book which made me want to look into diversity among the civil war era. I realized that this book was a little mature for 3rd and 4th graders so, I thought it would apply more towards 5th grade Social Studies. Discussing how other races have helped influence and shape our country is something that all students should be exposed to. I found all of the books that I used from Wintergreen Primary and from Amazon.com. I think I chose books that had a variety of genres such as non-fiction, fiction,& picture books for elementary students. The styles of writing were different and interesting. I really enjoyed the cumulative format biography. It is important to become familiar with various texts that connect to the content areas because literature should be included in as many genres as possible. When teaching a unit it is important to have a number of books that complement each other, but have their own individual story and identity. Supplying students with interesting literature promotes reading, and sparks student interest about topics. It is an easy way for students to gain important information.
