Recently,IhadthegreathonortobeelectedastheBoardChairforPreventChild AbuseAmerica.Itisaprivilegetohavethisresponsibilityintheoldestnational organizationdedicatedsolelytopreventtheabuseandneglectofournations children. Childabuseandneglectaffectsfarmorethanthechild,itisalsoavastdrainon economicresources.TheresearchcompletedbyPreventChildAbuseAmericainour recentreport,TotalEstimatedCostofChildAbuseandNeglectintheUnited States,hasprovenourbeliefthatpreventingchildabuseandneglectbeforeit occursisfarmorecosteffectivetheninterveningafterthemaltreatmenthastaken place. Whenthehistorychangingeventshaveoccurredinournationthathaveshakenour senseofnationalsecurityorindividualeconomicstability,thepolitical,public policy,administrativeandbudgetaryresponseshavebeenimmediateand comprehensive.Thissamesenseofurgencymustbeappliedtothehealthy developmentofournationschildrenandtocreatingbetterconditionsforparents tobethekindsofparentstheywanttobe. Asimportantly,theadverseimpactsofchildabuseandneglectoftenhavelifelong consequencesonchildrenthataffectthemsocially,academicallyandpersonally. Thisinturnimpactsthesuccessofourneighborhoods,ourcommunitiesand eventuallyevenournation. Theboardofdirectorsisresponsiblefornotonlysupportingourorganizations vision,butensuringourNationalOfficeandStateNetworkscandotheirjobs.In fulfillingtheseobligations,theboardcontinuestoprioritizethefinancialwellbeing ofourorganizationthroughdiversifyingrevenuesources,enrichingthe endowments,andsupportingtheorganizationatspecialevents. Our45statechaptersandHealthyFamiliesAmericasitesinover385communities in32statesarethekeystofulfillingourmissiontopreventchildabuseandneglect, butweneedyourhelpinordertogiveeachchildanequalopportunitytolivealife freeofabuseandneglect. Asanation,wemustshareacommonmissiontopreventtheabuseandneglectof ournationschildrenbeforeiteveroccurs. AsIreflecton2008,bothpersonalandprofessionalexperiencesremindmethatall parentsexperiencestress.Weallmustrecognizethedifficultjobofbeingaparent, regardlessofwealth.PreventChildAbuseAmericaisdedicatedtoprovidingall parentswiththeinformationweneedsothatwecanparenttothebestofour ability.Ibelieveournationalpoliciesmustincorporateandmakeavailablehome visitingandindepthparentingeducationtoallfamilies.Theseserviceshavebeen proventodecreaseriskstofamilies,andtheunhealthychildhoodexperiencesthat canresultwhenwedont. Weknowthattheseadversechildhoodexperiencescanhaverepercussionsacross thelifespanthatresultinaneconomicimpactof$103.8billionperyearwhenabuse andneglectisntprevented. Itstimewerethinkourpublicpoliciesonpreventionandchilddevelopment,both becauseitmakesgoodcommonsenseandbecauseitmakescentsforourcountry andoureconomy. Preventionisthebestremedyforchildabuseandneglect.Whileprosecutionand interventionarenecessarycomponentsofservicestofamilies,theyarenotthesole factorstoprovidejusticetoeachandeverychildacrossthecountry.PreventChild AbuseAmericaisdedicatedtoallchildrenandallfamilies. 2008Highlights PublicPolicysuccesseshappenastheresultofthecollectivehardworkofpeopleat thenational,state,andlocallevels.PreventChildAbuseAmericaisaleaderina coalitionthatactivatesadvocatesatthesethreelevelstoeducatemembersof Congressabouttheimportanceofinvestinginarangeofevidencebasedearly childhoodhomevisitationservices.In2008,ourjointeffortsresultedinsignificant actiononlegislationtoplan,develop,andfundstatewidehomevisitationsystems. Thecoalitionsuccessfullyengagedthesupportofover100MembersofCongress andover660organizationsforthelegislation.Thissupportultimatelyresultedin thelegislationbeingconsideredandpassedwithbroadbipartisansupportbyaU.S. HouseCommittee.Congressultimatelyadjournedwithoutcompletingactiononthe bill,butthemomentumbuiltin2008isalreadytranslatingintopolicygainsfor homevisitingin2009. Expectationsfor2009 PreventChildAbuseAmericaadvocatesforpoliciesthatpromotehealthychild developmentbypreventingchildabuseandneglectfromoccurringinthefirstplace. PreventChildAbuseAmerica,withthehelpofourChapterandHealthyFamilies Americanetworks,willworkwiththeAdministrationandCongresstooutline specificstepsthatournationmusttaketoembracechildabuseandneglect preventioninamoreeffective,meaningful,andcomprehensivemanner.Prevent ChildAbuseAmericawillalsocontinuetoadvocateforpoliciesthatsupportarange ofevidencebasedearlychildhoodhomevisitationservices.

2008Highlights PreventChildAbuseAmericaconvenesastatechapterExecutiveDirectorsmeeting everyyear.The2008planningcommitteedevelopedanagendainwhichnationally knownspeakersprovidedremarksoninteractingwiththemedia,addressing preventionwithinthecurrentpoliticalcontextandthelatestinformationon messaging.WehadagreatdialogueaboutmultipletopicsrangingfromStatewide PreventionPlanningasanewwayofthinkingtothedevelopmentofPreventChild AbuseAmericasNationalSignatureCampaignwhichwillhelpusspeakwitha consistentmessageonprevention.ChapterServicesalsohasinitiateddiscussionsin eachstatethatdoesnothaveachapter.Throughoutthispastyear,theNational OfficeseffortresultedintheadditionofstatechaptersinMontanaandMissouri. Expectationsfor2009 For2009,theChapterServicesDepartmentisfocusingonadditionalwaysto supportthe45PreventChildAbuseAmericachaptersinournetwork.Wehave startedbycreatingchaptersupportcallsthatareintendedtoopenthelinesof

communicationamongchapterstaffmembersaroundparticularareasofinterest. Wearealsoworkingwithchapterstorenewthefocusofourcontinuousquality improvementprocesswhichrecharterseachchaptereverythreeyears.Thecurrent focusistoassistchaptersonbuildingtheircapacitybyrevampingtheprocess. Alongwithlookingatachapterinaholisticway,wehaveaddedpeerreviewers alongwithonsitetechnicalassistance.Aschapterstellus,everychapter,nomatter howstrong,canalwaysimproveupontheircurrentwork.Thechallengeishowto dothatmovingforwardinthecurrenttoughtimes.Ourchaptersareinventiveand provetimeandtimeagainthattheycandoit!

ResearchCenter

2008Highlights In2008,theResearchCenterlaunchedanewprojectinpartnershipwiththe NationalIndianChildWelfareAssociationandPurdueUniversity,focusedon childhoodvictimizationandjuveniledelinquencyamongAmericanIndian/Alaska Nativeyouth.ResearchstaffalsoreleasedarevisedandupdatedreportontheTotal EstimatedCostofChildAbuseandNeglectintheUnitedStates,andcontinuedour workwithHealthyFamiliesAmerica,evaluationoftheCircleofParentsResponsible FatherhoodProject,theResearchTeleconferenceSeminarSeries,andservingasan informationresourcetoournetworksandthegeneralpublic. Expectationsfor2009 TheResearchCentersprojectsdescribedabovewillcontinueinto2009andbeyond. Ourcentralfocusisourroleasaninformationresourcetothechildmaltreatment field.Forexample,in2009weplantoupdateourreportontheTotalEstimatedCost ofChildAbuseandNeglectintheU.SuponthereleaseofthelatestNational IncidenceStudy(NIS4).Alsoin2009,theTribalYouthProjectwilldevelopandfield anationalwebbasedsurveyofAmericanIndian/AlaskaNativeyouth,andresearch staffwillinitiatethegroundworkforournationalHFAResearchAgenda.

2008Highlights InMay2008,theDivisionofMeetings&ConferencesproducedPreventChildAbuse AmericassuccessfulnationalconferenceinMilwaukee,Wisconsin,whichprovided worldclasseducationandnetworkingopportunitiesfor1,100professionalsinthe fieldsofchildmaltreatmentpreventionandfamilysupport.Conferencehighlights includedanontraditionalkeynotepaneldiscussingthefutureofchildabuse preventionfrommanydifferentperspectives,aplenaryaddressoninfantmental healthbyDr.MartinMaldonado,andstandoutsessionsdeliveredbysubjectmatter expertsincludingCordeliaAnderson,LawrenceWallackandJeffLinkenbach.The 2008nationalconferencewassuccessfulbothfinanciallyandprogrammaticallyas

witnessedbysatisfiedattendeesofferingfeedbacksuchasthis:Verygoodwell organized!Goodvarietyoftopicstochoosefromanddifferentskill/knowledge levels;Theworkshopswerephenomenal;andThestandoutsessionswerevery thoughtprovokingatrueeyeopeningexperience.

HealthyFamiliesAmerica
2008Highlights HealthyFamiliesAmericahasaccomplishedagreatdealinthepastyearduetothe hardworkofthemanydedicatedpeopleatnational,regional,andstatelevels. ThroughagenerousdonationfromHealthyFamiliesIndianaandIndianaUniversity wewillbeabletoprovidetheentirenetworkofHealthyFamiliesAmericaprograms withaccessto35hoursofqualitydistancelearningmodules.Thesetraining modulesofferarangeofimportanttopicsincludingkeepingbabieshealthyandsafe, fosteringinfantandchilddevelopment,addressingdomesticviolence,preventing childabuse,recognizingsubstanceabuse,respondingtorelationshipissues,and promotingmentalhealth. Expectationsfor2009 Thecurrenteconomiccrisishascreatedevenmorestressorsforfamilies.This,in turn,makesitmoreessentialfordirectservicestafftobeabletoidentify,address, andhelpfamiliesresolvetheissuesorchallengesinterferingwiththeir relationshipswiththeirchildren.In2008,webegantoenhanceourlongstanding collaborationwithGreatKids,Inc.(GKI)inordertostrengthenourtraining processesacrossthenetwork.GKIisaninternationaltrainingandconsulting organizationdedicatedtodevelopingexceptionalearlychildhoodandhomebased programsforfamilieswithchildren05years.HealthyFamiliesAmericaisan evidencebasedprogram,meaningresearchhasshownpositiveoutcomesfor families;however,inthiseverchangingworlditisessentialforustokeepgetting theresearchoutthereforthepublictoreviewandgainbetterunderstanding.Not onlyforwhatsuccesseswehavehad,butmoreimportantlyhowwecancontinueto improveHealthyFamiliesAmerica.WewillbeworkingwiththeHealthyFamilies Americanetworktopublishevaluationsandfocusonnewfundingopportunitiesto continueresearchingtheeffectivenessoftheprogram.

Development
2008Highlights WithalittlemakethataLOTofhelpfromourfriends,theDevelopmentTeam wasabletomakesteadyprogressamidtheeconomicstormsof2008.OurNational Board,volunteers,individualdonors,andcorporatepartners,includingKappaDelta, theWm.WrigleyJr.Company,VerizonWireless,Foresters,Target,SigmaDeltaTau, theNationalBasketballAssociation,andKohls,faithfullysustainedourwork.

KohlsKidsDayevents,KappaDeltaandSigmaDeltaTausoncampusfundraising eventsnotonlygatheredfinancialsupport,butbroughtthemessageofprevention toaneverwideningcircleoffriends.WeCanBeHeroeswasthethemeofa summereveningunderthestarstosupportHealthyFamiliesAmerica.Weteamed upwiththeChicagoBullsandVerizonWirelessforafantasticAugustgolfouting. TheBlueRibbonBallbroughtustogethertocelebrateoursuccess. Expectationsfor2009 In2009,theworldofphilanthropyisdifferentfromtheyearbefore,withplenty ofchallenges,andplentyofopportunities,aswell.Timetestedpartnershipswith TheWm.WrigleyJr.Company,VerizonWireless,Kohls,KappaDelta,SigmaDelta Tau,andtheNBAwillevolveinnewdirections.Theenergyandcommitmentof volunteerswillbemorecriticaltoourcontinuingsuccessthaneverbefore.Well combinetraditionaleventsliketheWrigleyStartEarlyRunandtheVerizon WirelessCharityOpen,withexcitingnewevents,liketheHousePartyWeekend,a nationwideseriesofeventstopreventchildabuse,takingplaceOctober2325.Our goalinallofthisistoraisefunds,true;butevenmoreimportantforthelongterm, toengagepeopleacrossthenationinourvitalmissionforchildren.

Communications

2008Highlights 2008wasayearwheretheCommunicationsTeamsoughttoexpanditsinfluenceon traditionalmediawhilesimultaneouslylookingtobuilditspresenceinsocialmedia. Withtheformerwerampedupoureffortstodeveloptimelypressreleasesand letterstotheeditor,engagereportersandmakePreventChildAbuseAmericathe gotoorganizationwhenitcomestodiscussionsandcoverageonchildabuseand neglectprevention.Evenasweaccomplishedthis,wealsopushedtocreateanew blogChangingtheWayWeThinkAboutPreventionaswellasYouTubeand Facebookpages.Wesaw2008asatimethenfornotonlybuildingourmedia presence,buttheplatformsweneedtoreachthepublicwherevertheyare. Expectationsfor2009 In2009thegoalistoincreasethevarietyofcommunicationsstrategiesweutilize, addingTwitterandothersocialmediatoolsforexample,whilealsoseekingto betterintegratealloftheseplatformsacrosstheorganization.Wewillalsoseekto continuetopursueourgoalsformoreconsistentmessagingandcommunications acrosstheagency,ournetworks,andthefieldofprevention.Additionally,weare alsolookingtofurtherenhanceandgroundourworkinupdatedframingresearch fromourlongtimepartnersattheFrameWorksInstitute,andobtainfundingfora nationalmediacampaignthatbuildsuponPinwheelsforPreventionandallofthe wonderfulpossibilitiesitholdstoengagethepublicandbuildanationalmovement aroundthepreventionofchildabuseandneglect.

MarketingDivision 2008Highlights TheMarketingDivisionwasestablishedandendeavoredtobuilduponthe successfullaunchofthePreventChildAbuseAmericanationalsignaturecampaign PinwheelsforPreventionTMandimplementcauserelatedmarketingeffortsto advanceourwork.In2008,PinwheelsforPreventiontookrootasmorethan 400,000blueandsilverpinwheelswereplantednationwide.Throughthis introductionofthepinwheelasthenewsymbolforchildabuseandneglect preventionintheU.S.,buildinguponmarketresearchandmessaging recommendationsfromtheFrameWorksInstitute,webegantotellamoresolution focusedpreventionstorydesignedtomobilizethepublicinsupportofourmission. In2008welaunchednewcauserelatedmarketingpartnershipswiththeWm. WrigleyJr.CompanyandNBA(WrigleysDoubleDoubleChallenge)andwithSix FlagsinsupportofHealthyFamiliesAmerica,andenjoyedcontinuedcauserelated marketingeffortswithFTD,GoodCauseGreetings,andHeartfeltCharityCards. Expectationsfor2009 TheMarketingDivisionexpectscontinuedgrowthwithPinwheelsforPrevention in2009,highlightedbytheexpansionofthecampaigntoadditionalstatechapters, theintroductionofmultipletraditionalandsocialmediapromotionaland fundraisingactivities,andthecultivationofadditionalcorporatepartnersand campaignspokespeople.Fromacauserelatedmarketingperspective,it'sexpected wewillwelcomenewcorporatepartnersintothefoldandcontinuetoworkwith ouraforementionedpartnersontheexpansionofthoserespectivecampaigns.
