The community hub of Laurel
Acres Park will be host to fun fami-
ly activities to welcome fall a little
early on Saturday, Sept. 15.
Mt. Laurels annual fall fest will
commence with opening cere-
monies behind the hill at 11 a.m.
and run through 4 p.m.
The fall festival is always a
great time, said Mayor Jim
Keenan.
A rain date is scheduled for Sun-
day, Sept. 16.
More than 20,000 area residents
have attended the festival in the
past, Keenan said.
Township officials are hoping
for some cooperating weather this
year.
Last year, it was not great
weather, said Richele Pilkington
of the recreation department. It
was muddy.
The theme for this season is
Wild Wild West.
Community representatives and
entertainers, including Lenape
High School students, will be on

Mt. Laurel Library will show
the documentary Biblioburro:
The Donkey Library which de-
scribes Luis Sorianos efforts to
bring books to poor children in
Columbia by way of two donkeys
on Friday, Sept. 14 at 2 p.m.
The public is invited to this
free event. No registration is re-
quired.
Carlos Rendn Zipagautas doc-
umentary, Biblioburro: The Don-
key Library, tells the story of 39-
year-old Soriano and his traveling
library from the point of view of
the man himself and, one might
say, his two hardworking burros.
The film rides along with Sori-
ano on one of his arduous week-
end rounds and discovers a world
of dense tropical beauty, nearly
impassable trails, dangers both
natural (snakes, swollen streams)
and human (guerillas, bandits),
open-air classrooms and, most
wonderfully, a thirst for reading
and knowledge. But Biblioburro
is also a portrait of Soriano an
unassuming, small-town elemen-
tary school teacher who not only
had a great idea, but has been act-
ing on it every weekend for over a
decade.
I thought this would be a mag-
nificent story to tell, for what it
says about human goodness and
inventiveness and for what it re-
veals about the dignity of the
Colombian people, especially the
poorest among them, said Film-
maker Carlos Rendn Zipagauta.
This event is a collaboration
with POV, the award-winning in-
dependent non-fiction film series
on PBS, www.pbs.org/pov.

dren read 10,352 books.
167 pre-readers completed
1,963 early literacy activities with
their families.
89 teens read over 441
books.
101 adults read 379 books.
The library is grateful to its
community partners for provid-
ing prizes for the summer read-
ing program.
This provided that extra moti-
vation to keep the reading going

T
he news from July wasnt great
for Atlantic City: another big
loss in casino win money from
the same month last year.
But, all is not lost, and August prom-
ised to be a bit better because we avoid-
ed a tropical storm, unlike last year.
The state reported that casino rev-
enue was down 9.5 percent from July
2011. That includes a lost weekend
(2011 had five weekends).
But comparing year-over-year data
might not be all that relevant to At-
lantic Citys future. Big wins or loss-
es on the part of high-rolling gam-
blers can make a difference. And the
citys fate really doesnt lie in the
hands of a hot weekend here and
there.
Atlantic Citys future depends on be-
coming a vacation destination for peo-
ple who not only like to gamble, but
also enjoy fine dining, entertainment,
nightlife and more.
The days of relying on busloads of
gamblers from surrounding states to
pay the bills are over. Those buses now
stop at casinos that are located much
closer to the gambers homes. Atlantic
City casinos have registered losses
ever since Pennsylvania opened its
casinos almost six years ago. Pennsyl-
vania gamblers, quite naturally, are
staying closer to home. At least those
who just want to spend a few hours in
front of a slot machine.
Atlantic Citys future is more closely
tied to new ventures, such as the Revel,
which is touting itself as something
much more than just a gambling hall.
That casino is seeing revenue growth.
Maybe not as much or as quickly as all
would like, but, nonetheless, it is grow-
ing.
Atlantic City has to reinvent itself
and thats not an impossible task. It
has to become the East Coast version
off Las Vegas something so grand, so
spectacular that people bypass their
local gambling establishment to expe-
rience something special.
Its on its way. But it wont get there
overnight.
in our opinion
Nothing to revel about
But we like Atlantic Citys efforts to be more than a slot machine parlor
AC might finally get it
Sure the July casino revenue numbers
were down. But a new marketing cam-
paign and other efforts seem to indi-
cate that Atlantic City finally realizes it
has to be something other than a col-
lection of gambling halls.

al 5K run or 1-mile walk will
begin at 7:30 a.m., but pre-regis-
tration is recommended.
T-shirts will be given out to the
first 100 pre-registrants, and the
entry fee is $20.
Without the program, said
Skolozdra, the young adults
would have no other social activi-
ties.
Theres no place for them to
go (otherwise), she said. These
young adults are just so over-
looked in society.
The program began with a
handful of young adults, but has
expanded to more than 20 in regu-
lar attendance during the weeks.
They can hang out with their
friends, she said.
From baseball games to prom
to karate lessons, to movies,
games, crafts and other activities,
there is never a dull moment, she
explained.
They just love being together,
she said. Love it.
On race day, the Mt. Laurel
Striders will be on hand to help
out.
Trophies will be given to the
overall man and woman winners
as well as awards to the top finish-
ers in a number of age groups.
The age categories will be 13
and under, 14 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to
39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 and over
and Masters.
There will also be a one-mile
walking course and the race will
be self-contained in the park.
Refreshments, including bagels
and fruit, will be served after the
race and those who register on
the day of the race will receive T-
shirts as long as supplies last.
McNamees daughter, Katie,
was the inspiration to begin the
organization, explained Skoloz-
dra. Katie has Down syndrome
and had finished school. Rather
than have her sit at home during
the days, she came up with the
program idea.
According to their website, the
program currently takes place on
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fri-
days from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., but
may expand to more days in the
future.
They have so much fun, said
Skolozdra. Its just a great
place.
KATES
Continued from page 2
Kates Place program has expanded over years
hand.
Its fun for every age, said
Pilkington.
The Philadelphia Area Song-
writers Alliance members will be
performing their own written
works.
Thats going to be exciting,
she said.
An urban pop band from South
Jersey, SJ3, will bring their spin
to the day.
Theyre pretty popular with
the teen crowd, she said.
For attendees who want to get a
little country, line dancing will be
taught.
Its fine to watch if you dont
want to participate, explained
Pilkington.
Its fun regardless, she
added.
Youngsters will have plenty of
ways to stay energized, between
pony rides, big slides, a moon
bounce and a rock wall.
On a more serious note, EMS
workers and the fire department
will teach about safety.
For those looking for a leisure-
ly stroll through the park, a vari-
ety of vendors will be setting up
booths for perusal.
Its just a beautiful day, said
Keenan. I encourage everyone to
come out.
5K run to precede festival
Residents with sneakers who
want to go for an early morning
run will have the opportunity
prior to the festival.
Mt. Laurel Township will be
presenting the run, rain or shine,
beginning on Sept. 15 at 8:30 a.m.,
with a 200-yard childrens fun run
for ages 6 and under at 8:15 a.m.
The course, mapped out years
ago by Keenan, will run solely
through Laurel Acres Park to
avoid road blockages.
It will include asphalt paths,
dirt roads, grass and a nature
trail, according to a township doc-
ument.
Members of the Mt. Laurel
Striders will be volunteering with
the race and awards will be given
to the top man and top woman fin-
ishers.
There is a $20 cost to register,
or $25 the day of the race, and the
registration form can be found on

Over at Mt. Laurel Library,
where the summer reading pro-
gram recently ended with thou-
sands of books digested by hun-
gry readers (though not literally),
an Edible Book Contest will be
held on Sunday, Sept. 30 from
noon to 3 p.m.
The creation entries will be
made of edible materials that
somehow relate to books.
According to a library release,
prizes will be awarded for entries
in the following categories: crowd
favorite, most creative
concept/original idea, most likely
to be devoured/tastiest looking
and children 12 and under.
In anticipation, check out last
years selections by visiting
www.tinyurl.com/MLediblebook.
Keep an eye on fall events. Be-
fore you know it, Santa Claus will
be making his annual trip to the
township.

Burlington County College
Board of Trustees announced
that David C. Hespe, a former
Commissioner of Education with
an extensive background in
teaching and learning, education-
al leadership and government,
has been chosen as the new col-
lege president.
Hespe, 52, of Belle Mead, is ex-
pected to formally assume his
new position with the college at
the beginning of September, fol-
lowing a three-to-four week tran-
sition period, according to Board
Chairman Joseph R. Malone, III.
The new president will earn
$175,000 a year.
Mr. Hespe brings a wealth of
knowledge and experience to the
table, said Malone. This is an
individual who, over a period of
more than 25 years, has gone
from the courtroom to the class-
room to the highest educational
positions in State government in
New Jersey.
He will bring important new
leadership to the college and, in
the process, work closely with all
the stakeholders in the BCC com-
munity to ensure that we contin-
ue to provide a top-notch educa-
tion at the lowest price possible,
Malone added.
Malone said the presidential
search process attracted more
than 50 applicants. Many of the
applications were screened by an
advisory committee that included
students, faculty, business lead-
ers, elected officials, and repre-
sentatives from the military, col-
lege foundation, and other com-
munity organizations.
The advisory committee pro-
vided advice and consultation to
the board of trustees' selection
committee, which conducted in-
terviews and then recommended
finalists who were interviewed by
the entire Board of Trustees.
Burlington County Freehold-
ers joined with the Board of
Trustees in announcing Hespes
selection. Freeholder Leah Arter,
who serves as the County govern-
ment liaison to the college and
participated in the selection
process, also gave Hespe a vote of
confidence.
David Hespe clearly under-
stands the importance of work-
ing with and partnering with the
freeholder board, said Arter.
Freeholders will continue to
look to the college as an impor-
tant player in the current eco-
nomic environment. BCCs abili-
ty to teach and prepare individu-
als of all ages to enter or reenter
the workforce is critically impor-
tant.
Freeholder Director Bruce
Garganio said that Hespe brings
to the job a background of experi-
ence, and involvement with key
players in higher education at all
levels, which can only benefit the
college moving forward.
Given the many important po-
sitions he has held, he is also
more than capable of taking
charge, and handling change,
Garganio added. The college is
headed into a new era on many
levels. But this is especially the
case for those students and fami-
lies who are coping with personal
financial issues, and have discov-
ered that Burlington County Col-
lege is an affordable, meaningful
option.
Hespe currently serves as
Chief of Staff for Commissioner
of Education in New Jersey, and
held the Commissioners post
from March 1999 to March 2001.
He followed that up by serving
as Chair and Associate Professor
of the Educational Leadership
Department at Rowan University
from April 2001 to July 2009.
There, he administered and
taught Masters and Doctoral level
programs for school leaders.
Higher education is certainly
familiar ground, said Hespe,
but Burlington County College,
with its many campuses and pro-
grams, presents unique new chal-
lenges. I thank the Board of
Trustees, and the freeholders, for
this honor, and I will do every-
thing possible to foster a produc-
tive working relationship.
Hespe added, I am excited to
be working with a board that un-
derstands that the core mission of
the institution is to serve our stu-
dents and in so doing to support
the families, communities and
economy of Burlington County.
Hespe is not a newcomer to
Burlington County. He served as
Interim Superintendent of
Schools and Assistant Superin-
tendent of Schools for the Will-
ingboro School District, a stint
that ran from July 2009 to Febru-
ary 2011.
He also served as Assistant
Counsel to the Governor, respon-
sible for all education and higher
education matters that came be-
fore the Governor (1994-1997).
Hespe has both a bachelors de-
gree and a juris doctor degree
from Rutgers University, and his
background includes the general
practice of law and serving
as First Assistant Attorney Gen-
eral.
He will serve as the fourth
president of the college, which
is now in its 43rd year of opera-
tion.
