AbstractIn this materialistic world, we often are worried about our daily routines and duties. We speak, communicate, travel to different places for different purposes. But, just imagine the plight of people who are dumb. How will they convey what they want, to people? Even if these people try to convey something we are not patient enough to listen. Our embedded base acts as a solution to this problem. When we produce sound from our mouth, there are vibrations produced in the vocal chords. The dumb produce sound that does not mean any sense in technical terms, the output is distorted. Our system is fixed at the lower jaw so as to sense these vibrations with an acoustic plate. Each sound made by the dumb person is Encoded/Decoded appropriately and the corresponding output is compared to a reference threshold that is stored in the microcontroller. Based on the output in the previous step a predefined voice for each signal is interpreted and given via a speaker which is integrated in the device. Thus, interpreting the distorted noise signals of the dumb person into a suitable predefined voice signal. Thus we have attempted to solve a very sensitive issue in this venture. We hope our system will act as a crucial crusader in the ocean of problems faced by the dumb people. Keywords: Acoustic Plate, Encoder/Decoder, Micro-controller

WORKING

I.

INTRODUCTION

Speech of human beings is produced by the vibrations of the larynx. Verbally challenged peoples speeches are not legible. This is because of the improper moving of the tongue. Thus the sound vibrations do not travel from the larynx to the tongue. Thus when these people talk it cant be understood. The DADEI system is fixed at the neck of the person who is verbally challenged. The Acoustic Plate (AP) is capable of sensing vibrations when the person utters something the vibrations sensed are converted to electrical signal by the transducer integrated in the AP. As these signals are converted to electrical signals, they are sent to as input to the Micro-Controller (MC) chip. The MC chip contains the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) references standards with which the input is compared. Based on the comparison result the output is given through the audio output provision. Thus this processes the distorted speech into proper audio speech. The speech processing is done by the MC chip which is installed with speech processing software for the in-built voice. This is the working of the DADEI system.

Communication is the important aspect of life. Imagine the plight of a person if he/she is not able to talk. Thus we thought of finding an appropriate solution for the verbally challenged people and make them communicate better. II. THE INVENTION

Our system uses an acoustic plate with a connected load cell transducer and a micro-controller chip. It also consists of a provision for audio output. Speech processing is done by the micro-controller chip.

NOTE This is the primitive model of our system. The microcontroller used can be 8051, PIC or ARM. The construction will be similar but the programming will differ. BASIS OF SPEECH PROCESSING

START ASSUMPTIONS We predefine the MC chip to identify two things: 1. Convert to electrical 2. VOWELS CONSONANTS ( Both the above parameters are called Identifiers)

Vibrations rec. by AP

Input to MC chip.

Compare with reference

For this identification we record two things which are the PITCH and the CLUSTER OF IDENTIFIERS from the vibrations. Thus the MC chip identifies the pitch first as per the flow chart. Then it identifies each and every letter of the cluster. We fix the threshold of the electrical signal from the transducer for the HIGH and LOW pitch. Ultimately the output is also fixed in the HIGH or LOW threshold. Identification of clusters is done depending on the comparison between the input and threshold voltage. The thresholds for generally used words are set in the memory. Thus the clusters are identified and given as HIGH or LOW audio output. V. LOW APPENDIX

A. MICROCONTROLLER CHIP A microcontroller (also microcontroller unit, MCU or C) is a small computer on a single integrated circuit consisting of a relatively simple CPU combined with support functions such as a crystal oscillator, timers, watchdog, serial and analog I/O etc. Microcontrollers are designed for small applications. Intel 8051 The Intel 8051 is a Harvard architecture, single chip microcontroller (C) which was developed by Intel in 1980 for use in embedded systems.

Alternately the PIC or ARM controllers can also be used in the DADEI system.

B. International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is a system of phonetic notation based on the Latin alphabet, devised by the International Phonetic Association as a standardized representation of the sounds of spoken language. Occasionally symbols are added, removed, or modified by the International Phonetic Association. As of 2008, there are 107 distinct letters, 52 diacritics, and four prosody marks in the IPA proper.

CONCLUSION

Thus we have posed a solution which can be implemented to reduce the plight of the verbally challenged people so that they can move along with the society in an amiable manner. REFERENCES
