TheSuperiorGeneral
InthemonthofJuly,theSuperiorGeneraltookpartinthemeetingof the Provincial Directors of the Daughters of Charity that was held in Parisfromthe1sttothe14th.From1525July,hewasinthePhilippines tocelebratetheclosingofthejubileemarkingthe150yearsofpresence of the Daughters of Charity and the Congregation of the Mission in thoselands. During the activities organized for this occasion, he had the opportunitytocelebratethesilver,golden,anddiamondjubi leesofsomesisters.Also,hetookpart,togetherwithFather Griffin and Sister Evelyne, in some events commemorating the history of the arrival of the Daughters of Charity to the Philippines. He participated in several meetings organized at Adamson UniversityandinthecelebrationsattheShrineofSaintVin cent de Paul, especially the Solemn Mass presided by the Archbishop of Manila and concelebrated by several bishops, confreres,anddiocesanpriestsandinwhichothermembers oftheVincentianFamilytookpart.

HetookadvantageofhisstayinthePhilippines tovisitamissionoftheprovinceinthesouthof that countrywherea confrere, Monsignor Jess Dosado,isthelocalbishop.Therehegottosee firsthand some of the missions that the con freresandtheDaughtersofCharityhave. AttheendofJuly,hewasinRomeforameeting oftheGeneralCouncilandtocarryoutdifferent officeduties.

From315August,hewasinEcuador.Allowmetofollowthein formationputforthbyJosIgnacioFernndezMendoza,Visitor ofEcuador,whonarrateshowthisvisitdeveloped.Comingfrom Panama on 3 August, the Superior General arrived in Quito. Awaiting him at the airport were Jos Ignacio Fernndez Men doza, Visitor; Sister Piedad Rojas, Visitatrix; and a group of priestsandsisters.TheSuperiorGeneralintendedtomeetvari ousgroupsoftheEcuadoran VincentianFamily: priests, Daugh tersofCharity,andlaity. On4August,hetravelledtoImantag,amissionaryparishserved bytheconfreresintheDioceseofSanMigueldeIbarra.Assoon as he arrived in the indigenous zone, the Superior General, ac companiedbytheVisitorandthepastor,JosLuisPaucar,went aroundtooneafteranotheroftheindigenouscommunitiesscat teredacrossthevastareaoftheparish.Theyhadhadtwoweeks ofmissionsfromtheVMY,theDaughtersofCharity,andthecon freres,whocamefromdiverseProvincesofLatinAmerica.

Adaylater,on5August,Sunday,therewasaEucharisticcelebrationtoclosethepopularmission.Itwasarranged by the VMY of Latin America in the parish church. Msgr. Valter Maggi, Bishop of the Diocese, presided. The churchwaspacked.Itwasnotinvainthattheinhabitantsofthediverseindigenouscommunitieshadcomefrom theirrespectiveplaces.Thejoyandparticipationofthefaithfulwerefeltateverymomentthroughthehymnsand eventhenativefolklore. On6August,hevisitedthreehousesoftheCMProvince:theSaintVincentdePaulSchoolinConocoto,wherehe mettheteachersandlatertouredtheclassrooms;theformerProvincialHouseonRocafuerteStreet,anhistorical partofSanFranciscodeQuito;and,finally,thebuildingownedbytheprovince,locatedontheAvenidadeAmer ica(Quito).InSanCarlos,theProvincialHouseoftheDaughtersofCharity,hegreetedagroupofsistersbelonging totheProvinceofBogota.HeevenhadtimeforaninterviewbeforethemicrophonesofRadioMaria. OnTuesday,the7th,hedevotedhimselftotheDaughtersofCharity,inthiscasefollowingtheprearrangedpro gram.

Onthemorningofthe8thandforpartoftheafternoon,theSuperiorGeneralremainedintheScholasticateat thedispositionoftheconfreres.Inlateafternoon,hemetwithallthegroupsoftheEcuadoranVincentianFamily inSanCarlos.Atthebeginningofthesession,theSuperiorGeneraltalkedaboutthesituationoftheVincentian Familythroughouttheworld. Thefollowingday,Thursday,therewasameetingintheScholasticateoftheSuperiorGeneralwiththeVisitor andProvincialCouncil.LaterinthemorninghepresidedattheEucharist,concelebratedbythemajorityofthe provincesconfreres.Thestudents,whoanimatedthecelebration,assisted.Intheafternoon,hevisitedthePar ishofSanAntoniodePadua,wheretheconfreresserve.ItislocatedinSanAntoniodePichincha,aplacerecog nizedastheequator. Finally,on10August,hepaidavisit,inSantoDomingodelosColorados,nowdelosTschilas,totheconfreresof AscensionParishorOldCathedral,wherehemetwiththemembersofthehouseandwithaconfrereofOurLady oftheMiraculousMedalParishandSaintVincentdePaulParishinElEsfuerzo.HealsowenttotheDiocesan SeminaryofSanPedro,servedbytheCMmissionariesfromtheProvinceofColombia. Atalltimes,theSuperiorGeneralfoundafraternalreception.Hetooktheopportunitytoexhortthemembersof theVincentianFamilyandtolearntherealsituationoftheEcuadoranCMProvince. From16Augustonward,hewaswithhisfamilytorest.Duringthistime,healsotookadvantageofsomeactivi tiesofinteresttotheCongregationoftheMissionandtheVincentianFamily.

TakenfromanarticlebyJuanVelascoRoblainthemagazine,EcosdelaProvinciadeGijon From114July,theMeetingoftheProvincialDirectorsoftheDaughtersofCharitywasheldinParis.Itstheme was:TheProvincialDirector:animator,accompanier,andformatoroftheDaughtersofCharity.Itconsistedof twoweeksofformation,information,anddialoginafamiliar,simple,andfriendlyenvironment. The meeting began with a morning of spiritual retreat. During the meeting, Patrick Griffin focused, in an ex traordinaryway,onhowtheProvincialDirectormusthavethreeactions,inspiredbytheMostHolyTrinity:For mation(Father),Accompaniment(Son),andAnimation(Spirit).Forherpart,SisterEvelyne,spokeoftheCom panyofTodayandoftheFuture,withstatisticsandconcreteinformationonsisters,communities,provinces,and works. Every day was devoted to a topic with one or two conferences, followed by moments ofreflectionandpersonalstudy,workinlan guagegroups,discussions,andplenaryses sions,etc. We pray that the fruits of this meeting might strengthen our ties of friendship, of workincommon,andespeciallyofanaffec tive and effective impact on the life of the poor.

From 15 July to 6 August 2012, the VII EMLA (LatinAmerican Mis sionaryMeeting)washeld.ItisameetingoftheVincentianMarian Youth,whichisheldeveryfouryears.ThistimeittookplaceinEcua dor,withthetheme:From the firmness of our faith we are wit nesses to Hope.TheMarianyouthfromallthecountriesofLatin America and the Caribbean, accompanied by their advisors, re sponded in an enthusiastic and creative way to the whole program preparedbytheLatinAmericanTeamorganizingthismeeting. The different provinces of the Congregation of the Mission in Latin America were represented by the confrereadvisors: Arturo Aguirre (Peru),MarioHernndez(CentralAmerica),HugoSossa(Argentina), Jaime Reyes (Mexico), Rolando Molina (Mission of USA East in Pa nama),AnulfodelRosario(PuertoRico),AstorRodriguez(USAEast), Alexis Gonzalez (Venezuela), and Juventino Castillero (from FAM VINsOfficeintheGeneralCuria).

This threeweek workshop was divided into two stages. A week of meeting, where the participants lived to gether, being formed, reflecting, praying, meditating, exposing their realities, looking for lines of action that respondtotheirchallenges,andhavingotherexperiencesthatstrengthentheiridentitywithintheVincentian Family.InthisEMLAEcuador,104personstookpart,bothmembersofVMYandadvisors.

Duringthisweekformationworkshopswereca rriedout;therewerepresentationsonthepartof advisors and members of VMY; a retreat was held;thesacramentallifewasfortified;thework andrealityofVMYinLatinAmericawereevalua ted; and the new LatinAmerican team, which willhavetopreparethenextEMLAin2016,was chosen. TwoweeksofMission,whichwasorganizedwit hin the areas of Mission where the Vincentian Familyhasapresence.

Themajorityofthoseassistingparticipated.Onthisoccasion,themissionaryarea selectedwastheparishrunbytheVincentianpriestslocatedinImantag,anindige nousareaoftheEcuadoranhighlands.Withinthismission11missionarycenters were organized: Colimvuela, Morlan, Ambi, Quitumba, Perivuela, Pucalpa (Santa Lucia),SanLuis,Perafan,Tejapamba,ImantagCentro,andLaLadera. TheparishbelongstotheCotacachiCanton,ProvinceofImbabura.Cotacachiis anindigenoustown,considered,ecclesiastically,anareaofmission.Itslanguage is Quechua. Migration has affected its identity and the family and community sphereshaveadoptedcustomsnottheirown.Fifteenyearsagoitwasatownwith wellestablishedcustoms. Theactivitiesmostdevelopedintheareaareartisanal.LEATHERGOODS.Their productionisthepredominantactivityofthecraftsmen;theymakeagreatvariety of articles of quality leather such as: wallets, purses, belts, bags, shoes, clothes, etc.,whicharesoldinthestoresinthecityandabroad.Cotacachiisknownasthe capitalofleatherduetothehugenumberofproductswithregardtocolor,quality, designs,andprice.Thereareseveralleathergoodsworkshopsopentothepublic whereitispossibletoobservetheprocesstobefollowedtoobtainafinalproduct ofqualityandwithlocalidentity. FABRICS.Basedonprocessedhempandwicker,thewomenofIntagValleymake crafts of a decorative type like carpets, curtains, pot holders, wallets, handbags, belts, etc.,of diverse colors dyedwith natural elements. Similarly, based on the woolandcottonintheindigenouscommunitiesofMorln,Colimbuela,LaCalera, Morochos,Chilcapamba,etc.,theyproduce:bags,tapestries,hammocks,sashes, ponchos,shirts,andsandals. POTTERY.Theindigenous women ofthe communities ofTunibamba and Alam buela produce pottery: they combine couples of elements for the perfect work: hard/softearth,water/fire,cold/hot. Some 60 missionaries took part in this experience suitable to our charism. It strengthenedYMVsmissionaryreputationinasystematicwaywithaprocessand amethodthrough evangelization,especially among the poorest,which isproper toouridentity.

Itisnecessarytocallattentiontothegoodworkthat the outgoing LatinAmerican Team accomplished in organizingthismeeting.Itisalsoworthadmiringthe effortanddedicationoftheyoungpeopleofEcuador whocarriedoutthisworkshopwithgreatenthusiasm.
