ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (CANADA)

Preparing for University demands a high level of academic English. This involves developing a strong command of academic reading, note taking and lecture skills, and of course, academic writing and research skills. The best way to demonstrate a high level of academic English is to measure these skills against an internationally recognized assessment exam. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is known as the world s language prociency test because it is so widely used by institutions of higher learning in Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and around the world. The GV EAP program helps students prepare skills for entering university and graduating from their higher learning programs. To complete the EAP program, students need 45 credits. Students will receive 5 credits per successfully completed level. Graduation from the EAP program depends on excellent attendance, and an average of 8 weeks per level. Each level has exit tests which must be passed to move to the next level. Students must do 30 lessons per week. Previous knowledge is recognized and students do not need to take a course for which they are already qualied. In depth needs assessments are conducted at each GV centre to ensure that students only study what they need.

I would like to emphasise how important it was for me to receive positive feedback from my teacher. It was very encouraging, especially on those occasions when moral support was actually more helpful than lexical resources! Practice makes perfect, and I have seen a dramatic improvement in my ability here at Global Village Vancouver. Mariana Moldanado, Mexico
