The Fall Job & Internship Fair is coming up and that means recruiters will be looking to meet talented, enthusiastic candidates who will become successful interns and employees for their respective organizations. And while the talented and enthusiastic part is easy when youre talking about DePaul students and grads, a lot of firms are recognizing that to create a win-win situation, the recruiting process has to be kicked up a notch. One of the areas getting a LOT of attention is interview questions specifically, behavioral questions. Consultants are actively encouraging organizations to develop questions that are better suited to discovering candidates strengths and determining their probable cultural fit. Of course, as a candidate, these things are critical to you too, because without the right strengths for a particular role and without a good environment in which to thrive, you cannot be successful! What follows is a list, in no particular order, of some of the questions that various consultants have suggested: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. Tell me about yourself. Why should I pick you? Define work ethic and describe yours. Tell me about a time when you solved a problem. Tell me what steps you take to monitor/maintain/improve the quality of your work. Tell me about a time when you pitched in to help someone when it wasnt your job. Tell me about a time when you had to work/interact with someone you didnt like. If you were put in a compromising situation at work, where would you turn? Tell me about the hardest decision youve had to make. Tell me about a time you knew you were right but had to follow directions or guidelines. Tell me about the last time your workday ended before you got everything done.

10 Career Strategies for Freshmen and Sophomores

You control your career destiny! Just going to class and picking up your diploma after four years doesnt cut it. You need to become active on and off campus. Becoming marketable to employers or graduate schools is a four-year job. Here are the top 10 things you can do during college to make yourself marketable at job-search time. In fact, if you do all 10 of these, youll be unstoppable: 1. Keep your grades up Employers and graduate schools want candidates with good grades. That will probably never change. Doing well academically not only proves that you have a good knowledge base, but indicates a strong work ethic a trait that employers value. 2. Identify your interests, skills, values, and personal characteristics The first step to clarifying your career goals is to go through a process of selfassessment. It is important to learn about who you are, what you like, and what is important to you when thinking about majors and careers. Visit the Career Center or attend a workshop like Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) for assistance.

Whats the nicest thing youve done for someone? 15. What did (do) you like least/most about your job/internship? 16. Which job, internship or class did you like the most/least, and why? 17. What was the most productive team youve ever been on, and why? 18. What has been your most deadline sensitive project and how did you manage it? 19. What do people consider you the go to person for (work/class project/volunteer)? 20. Tell me about your last mistake. 21. Tell me about the type of environment that brings out the best in you. While you may hear some of these questions, or at least similar questions, its impossible to guess/ predict the exact questions any particular recruiter will ask. It is, however, safe to predict a few things: Broad areas of interest are: stress management (i.e. deadlines both predictable and crisis; work/school/life prioritization; high pressure work environment understaffed, ever changing priorities, time sensitive

Given the relatively short face-to-face time at a job fair, recruiters generally ask the questions that are most relevant to their screening process, so use that as a cue to focus on your strengths that relate directly to their hot button. Recruiters not blessed with a photographic memory cannot possibly remember every person they speak with at a job fairhowever they tend to remember people they liked, people who genuinely engaged them in their stories and people who asked them good questions! Prepare for the Fair: A little research goes a long way

DePauls Career Center holds a variety of Job & Internship Fairs for DePaul students and alumni each year, which range from industry-specific fairs to more general fairs. If youve never attended a fair before, you might wonder: can I really find a job or internship at one of these fairs? Is attending a fair worth it? The answer to both of these questions is YES. Job opportunities are waiting for you. However, its important to do your research before attending any fair in order to make your time worthwhile. A good way to start off this research is by checking out the DePaul Career Center website at careercenter.depaul.edu and clicking on the Events & Workshops tab. There you will find information regarding upcoming Job & Internship Fairs, workshops and other events held by the Career Center. The Job & Internship Fair section provides useful tips on how to prepare before attending a fair as well as on what to do while at the fair. Its also always a good idea to look up which employers will be attending a fair and the types of positions theyll be recruiting for, given this information can help you determine whether a certain fair is a good fit for you and if the positions available match the criteria of your job or internship search. It will also help you target

which organizations to visit during the fair and which to research a little more before you go. To access the list of employers attending any given fair, click View current job fair schedule on the Job & Internship Fair webpage. From there, you can click on the list of registered organizations for each fair. You can also follow the Career Center on Facebook and Twitter to get timely updates and advance lists on whos coming to the different fairs. Another great tip is to attend the industry-specific fairs such as the Management, Marketing and Sales Fair in November or the Music & Entertainment Fair in February. The real world is not organized by major! Employers at these fairs are looking for students from a variety of majors, backgrounds and skill levels. Dont disregard a niche fair - otherwise you could miss out on the dream job or internship opportunity youve been looking for. 3. Actively explore career options You owe it to yourself to find a career that enriches your life. Actively exploring careers means talking with professionals in occupations of interest and observing professionals on the job. Connect with alumni via the Alumni Sharing Knowledge (ASK) program. Also, attend any career fairs, speaker panels and career networking events that are offered. 4. Become active in extracurricular activities and clubs Active involvement in activities and clubs on campus is highly valued by employers and graduate schools. Joining a club is fine, but becoming active within that club is what matters most. Become a leader, hold an office, or coordinate an event. You will develop your skills in leadership and teamworkskills that recruiters covet! 5. Get involved in community service Its important that you begin to understand and appreciate the importance of giving back to your community, and that you live in a larger community than your college or hometown. Typically, students look at community service as a chore. After theyve served, however, its usually one of the most rewarding experiences theyve had! Recruiters love to see that youve volunteered to help in your community. 6. Develop your computer skills Take advantage of the computer courses and workshops DePaul offers. You can also learn a lot by just experimenting with different software packages on your own. Finally, you should learn how to develop your own web page or web-based portfolio. 7. Develop your writing skills Over and over, company and graduate school recruiters complain about the lack of writing skills among college graduates. Dont avoid classes that

are writing intensive. Work at developing your writing skills. Have the Writing Center take a look at your papers from time to time. Remember, the first impression you give to recruiters is typically your cover letter or personal statement. 8. Complete at least one internship in your chosen career field More and more, internships are the springboards to employment and getting into graduate programs. Many recruiters say that when they need to fill entry-level jobs, they will only hire previous interns. In addition to making yourself more marketable, internships also are a great way to explore careers and determine whether or not certain careers are for you. 9. Gain an appreciation of diversity through study abroad, foreign languages, and courses We are now, more than ever, working within a global work force. For you to be successful at work and in your life, you must stretch yourself, and learn about people and cultures different than yours. Take advantage of the wonderful study-abroad opportunities and the courses relating to diversity. 10. Use the Career Center all four years The Career Center can help you throughout your entire college career. From choosing a major, to writing a resume, to landing a job or internship, there are resources and services to assist you. Remember, you control your career destiny.
