It's a post that I want to write every 5th of Sept. (Teacher's day in India), but I find my words too less to express the gratitude to my teachers who shaped me in what I am today. Now-a-days, everyone talks about education Te ac he r' s d ay g re e ting s to all! becoming a business, how teaching profession is not what it was once upon a time. It makes me laugh sometime. The same tale was going around 20 years back when I was in college. And I came across some great teachers...people who were not just doing a great job of teaching the syllabus but also imparted human values by their own example. Even today I can visualize Sailani sir thinking deeply, chin in his hand, gazing out from the class window. With a teacher like him Maths was a subject not dreaded but welcomed by all. He never went by the book. He used to encourage us to solve a problem in as many different ways. Sometimes using one

problem in as many different ways. Sometimes using one formula, other times using another one. Sailani sahab (As we called him with respect) put the thought in my mind that there could be many more approaches to a situation. When I look back, it must be the beginning of my journey as a creative person. Now, Sailani sahab is not with us in the physical world. But his words inspire me every day: "Forget the text, use your own mind, find your own solutions!" Dr Vishnu Bhatnagar and Mrs Juneja were my language teachers. They encouraged me to play with the language. English was a second language to me, but Mrs Juneja made us write so many essays in a session that we could compile it and be an author! She was a strict teacher. A task master. If you are not in time, you are out!If I reach for meetings 10 minutes early, it's to Mrs Juneja's credit. Dr Bhatnagar taught us Hindi. My mother tongue. I was more at home with him. He brought the writer in me out. He encouraged me to read the best of literature and write for the newspapers. He sent me (And Ashok Baweja) to interview prominent personalities in town for our annual magazine. He never gave us homework, even if he gave never asked for

it! He was more interested in my journey as a writer. He would ask me: "Naya kya likha?" (What have you written recently?") In college Prof. M. L. Pandey greatly influenced me. He used to teach us Materials management and designing as part of the mechanical Engineering curriculum. He was thorough in his subject. Very honest to the profession. But he was master at working with the mind material. He used to get into motivational talks in between the class. There were times in the class when I thought he was only talking to me. It's his yardstick for success which is guiding me today as a trainer. I remember him telling us: "Real success is not a big designation, or how much money you make, real success is in how many people get success because of you! Design something which can help other people achieve their potential!" It's teachers like them who shaped my persona, encouraged me to be myself. I feel a sense of gratitude that they nurtured me, went to the extra miles to make me what I am today.

When I hear people cribbing that education has turned into a business activity, I understand what they mean. But I am sure there are great teachers in the system even today. I know many of them putting their mind, heart and soul in the profession. ( Dr Nageshwar Rao, Dr P.K. Sharma, Dr P.K. Singh, and my friends Apratul Shukla and Prabhat Yadav!) And it's even more important to salute them! Who inspired you? Make sure to express your gratitude!
