ONLINE EDITOR

AMH is looking for an experienced journalist with online experience to take responsibility for the group's websites, including NewsDay, The Zimbabwe Independent, and The Standard. The Online Editor will work as one of the senior editorial team in the group. This wide-ranging role covers editorial output and management responsibilities. The position reports to the Group Editor-in-Chief.

Main Responsibilities

To manage all three websites, ensuring that they not only reflect the editorial thrust of each newspaper, but that they also offer imaginative and engaging interactivity; To make sure that all online and interactive decisions display excellent journalism and editorial judgement and protect the AMH core values of objectivity, impartiality, accuracy and fairness; To attend the daily editorial meetings in order to offer story ideas and imaginative story treatment; To decide which stories deserve to go online based on a) audience need for information and b) ability to add interactivity; To manage the websites in a way that preserves the editorial exclusives uncovered by each title while at the same time cross-promotes all titles in order to enrich the user experience and save duplication of effort; To build a strong online following by creating regularly updated and compelling content that encourages the audience to return and stay; To manage the archive of AMH stories with a view to building the richest repository of important Zimbabwean news and events; To measure the performance of the online titles by keeping a track of statistics and reporting back to senior management on trends with a view to suggesting strategic changes if needed; To work closely with sales and marketing to advise on new opportunities for revenue-generation;

Required Skills and Experience

Wide-ranging knowledge of the online production processes and a track record of successfully managing a news website; A BA in Journalism, or BSc in Communications, or computer science with solid grounding in journalism, either print or broadcast; At least three (3) years' experience in business use of social media, blogs and audio/video; Experience of leading and motivating teams, and encouraging and developing production staff; Evidence of interpersonal and communication skills strong enough to establish credibility with senior colleagues; Ability to perform when under pressure and deliver content to deadlines; Ability to generate innovative ideas for new output strands; Experience of managing resources to a budget and being able to look for efficiencies; Solid knowledge of editorial ethics, in particular in the digital and online space;
