Statistics solution based on Analysis of Variance:

A psychologist is asked to design a new transformer toy for 6-8 yr. old boys. The psychologist designs two new transformers figurines with two different outfits. I-Paul transforms into an IPOD which you can use to play or create music. Rock-N-Roll Fly Ray transforms into a videogame which has a Guitar Hero game and an Aviator game. A small number of samples of each are made in order to see which is more appealing to the boys of that age. The boys are allowed to pick and play with the toys for as long as they want for a few months at several toy store locations. The stores all contain videotapes of the interactions and of course parents are made aware of the experiment. In fact they were randomly selected and invited to come to the store nearest their location. This study was done across the states but for our purposes you will only be given a limited number of participant data. The following are the data representing the amount of time spent with the toy. Each number represents the minutes of play for one child:

Playtime Skateboard Outfit 5 4 I-Paul 3 2 8 5 Military Outfit 13 10 11 10 12 9

Rock-N-Roll Ray

9 8 6 7 7 8

30 25 28 19 20 22

Please perform the correct statistical test on the above data set. Please set-up a table for yourself as seen in chapter 8. Indicate your work, what statistical test you are performing, and why. Be sure to include your results AND interpretations. What, if any, problems do you think there are in the design? What other type of statistical test could have been run to show if there were preferences among the boys? Solution: Null Hypothesis (Ho): There is no difference in the population mean Playtime based on videotapes. Alternative Hypothesis (Ha): There is no difference in the population mean Playtime based on videotapes. Two-way ANOVA is used because there are two factors in the experiment. Two factor ANOVA Factor 2 Means: Column 1 4.5 7.5 6.0 Column 2 10.8 24.0 17.4

Factor 1

Row 1 Rock

7.7 15.8 11.7

ANOVA table Source Factor 1 Factor 2 Interaction Error Total SS 392.04 782.04 155.04 135.83 1,464.96 df 1 1 1 20 23 MS 392.042 782.042 155.042 6.792 F 57.72 115.15 22.83 pvalue 2.56E-07 9.54E-10 .0001

Since p-value is very small for Factor 1, Factor 2 and Interaction, null hypothesis is rejected. We can conclude that they are statistically significant. Hence, there is no difference in the population mean Playtime based on videotapes.
