KEY PROJECTS Obfuscation in Cryptography Guides: Dr. Ramarathnam Venkatesan, Dr. Satya Lokam Microsoft Research, Bangalore Ongoing

Critically analysed a new denition of obfuscation with hardware assistance in relation to older work done on software protection, and established the relation between the two models. Extending and optimizing a scheme to securely obfuscate straight-line programs using minimal support. Looking at establishing lower bounds for hardware-assisted obfuscation. Working paper with results from this project can be found at ~ananthr/docs/obf-paper.pdf Theoretical Aspects of White Boxing Guides: Dr. Satya Lokam, Dr. Prasad Naldurg Microsoft Research, Bangalore May 2008 - Aug. 2008

Looked at the problem of white boxing software from a theoretical point of view, for the rst time. Provided security denitions to encompass cryptographic settings, and showed the relation of white boxing to obfuscation in several scenarios. A fast hash function using Expander Graphs Guides: Dr. Pandu Rangan, Dr. Ramarathnam Venkatesan IIT-Madras, Chennai Ongoing

Working on the details of a new hash function whose security can be, ideally, provably reduced to AES. First such idea or design towards incorporating provable security into fast hash functions by using currently unbroken (though unproved) cryptographic primitives like AES. Further details of this hash function are available at ~ananthr/docs/hash.pdf Exploring Polynomial Reconstruction Guide: Dr. Pandu Rangan IIT-Madras, Chennai May 2007 - July 2007

Looked at polynomial reconstruction as a building block and several allied topics in Cryptography. Proposed a few schemes to use PR in authentication and key exchange. Tried to construct a provably secure hash function that is resistant to quantum computation, using PR. Steganalysis of S-Tools Guides: Dr. Amiya Saha, Dr. Soma Mitra Center for Dev. of Advanced Computing, Kolkata Winter 2006

Developed tools to aid in Steganalysis of steganographic software. Worked out an overall scheme describing how the steganographic software hid data in images. ACADEMIC PROJECTS Camouage Spring 2008 Wrote a software to hide plain text data in images in a manner that is imperceptible to the naked eye. This software used the latest algorithms and techniques to preserve security of protected data including world-class algorithms like AES and the SHA family of hash functions, ratied by the U.S. Govt. A Pascal Compiler Autumn 2007 Wrote a compiler from scratch for a subset of Pascal, with help from Lex and Yacc software. This covered functions, procedures, recursion and other common features of Pascal as part of our Language Translators course under Prof. C. Sivarama Murthy Implementation of OS functionalities in GeekOS kernel Autumn 2007 Written code to implement loader, scheduler and semaphores to the GeekOS skeleton. Also implemented paging, device drivers and other functionalities in the GeekOS kernel as part of the Operating Systems course under Prof. B.Ravindran Basics of Process Management Spring 2007 Implemented basic code to manage processes in assembly language, including task-switching, paging, and interrupt handling as part of the Computer Organization course under Prof. V.Kamakoti Basic functional implementation of a 4-bit processor Autumn 2006 Implementation of basic units of a processor using TTL chips with memory, registers, and ALU as part of the Digital Logic and Design course under Prof. V.Kamakoti 2
