TurbomacHinery AeRomechanical UniverSity Training THRUST Programme Overview

Note: the information herein gives an overview of the Masters programme structure. Specific courses and activities are subject to change, although the general overview is maintained.

Year 1 All students are present at KTH 1

Semester 1
The courses on the first semester aim to give the student the basic understanding on heat, power and propulsion aspects in turbomachinery and develop basic skills for more advanced courses in further semesters. These courses include power generation, fluid machinery, introduction to aeromechanics in turbomachines, basics on measurement techniques, advanced mathematics, introduction to computational fluid dynamics and advanced mechanical vibrations.

Semester 2
The course in this semester treat more advanced phenomena in turbomachinery. Both the structural as well as the aerodynamic field are treated in depth. Experimental and numerical techniques and methods are studied. The courses include thermal turbomachinery, unsteady aerodynamics, advanced mechanics and finite element methods, advanced aeroelasticity among other elective courses as combustion theory and combustion instabilities and vibrations. In semesters 1 and 2 there are also project courses, in which the student will study in teams to solve a specific industrial project.

Semester 2 - Easter Break: All students present at one partner university

All the students are present at one of the partner universities and will be doing Research Paper Seminars. This is a course in which students will read research papers, prepare a presentation and then one of the students will be selected to present the review while another student will be

opponent. Each student have to read and prepare for presentation of all the selected papers, but they will only (randomly) be selected to make one presentation. Other activities such as seminars in Professional Development can also be done during this period.

Between Semester 2 and Semester 3: Students distributed among partners (university and industry)
The students will do a summer internship at selected industries/universities. They will interact with each other in remote discussion seminars. At the end of the internship the student shall make a 10 min presentation (remote) to all the course participants about the project.

Year 2 Specialization Option

Unsteady Aerodynamics
This option is mainly developed at Duke University. This option aims to give the student a strong ground related to unsteady aerodynamics. Advanced courses as advanced aerolasticity and unsteady aerodynamics are included here. Elective courses as advanced fluid mechanics, compressible fluid flow, non -linear fi nite elements, engineering acoustics, intermediate fluid mechanics, advanced aerodynamics are also part of this option. The courses are distributed among semesters 3 and 4.

Structural Vibrations and Fatigue

This option is mainly developed at AUTH. This option aims to give the student a strong ground related to vibration and fatigue in turbomachinery. Courses as advanced dynamics and vibrations, random vibration and reliability, fracture mechanics and structural fatigue, and turbomachinery aeromechanics applications are included in this option. Elective courses as experimental methods in vibration, health monitoring in turbomachinery and advanced control in structural dynamics are also part of this option. The courses are mainly given in semester 3.

Aeromechanical and Material Design

This option is mainly developed at ULg. This option aims to give the student a strong ground related to aeromechanics and material design in turbomachinery. Courses as mechanical design of turbomachinery, fracture mechanics, damage and fatigue, materials selection and large deformation of solids are included in this option. Elective courses as fluid structure interaction, mechanics of composite, vibrations testing and experimental modal analysis, mechanical computer -aided design are also part of this option. The courses are mainly given in semester 3.

Thesis Project
The final thesis project is done in semester 4 (semester 3&4 in case of mobility option 3) and the students are attached to one of the 4 partner universities. The study is performed in industry or at university.

Semester 4 Easter Break: all students present remotely in the seminars

The students are present at their specialization option location. This is similar to the course in Easter Break in semester 2. Courses and seminars related to society culture, professional development, job interview training and other related themes can also take part of the activities during this period.

Semester 4: Wrap-up & Degree Ceremony

*Most courses given by Duke University remotely. ** The thesis project is performed during semester 4. Students including specialization of Unsteady Aerodynamics (UA) (i.e.: options 2, 3 and 5) will also follow courses in semester 4. If specialization in Unsteady Aerodynamics is not included (i.e.: options 1, 4 and 6), only the thesis work is compulsory during semester 4.

Being accepted to the Master Programme does not guarantee you will be assigned to your mobility option preference. The option attribution is based on preference but is not automatically satisfied. Selection process of the mobility option will be issued during the first semester of the Master Programme.
