THE INSTITUTE FOR BYZANTINE STUDIES The IBR is committed to being at the forefront of research in the areas of Byzantine

studies. Since its establishment in 1960, its goal is to present and promote interdisciplinary approaches in the various fields of Byzantium. The Institute aims at a multilevel and multifaceted study of Byzantine culture that combines the various theoretical and practical methodological tools of Philology, History, History of Art and Archaeology. The Institutes aim is to advance the subject in its widest sense through the research of individual scholars, collaborative research projects and strategic alliances with other Institutes of Byzantine studies abroad. The results of research activity at the IBR are disseminated through a variety of print and online publications, as well as lectures, seminars and other events. Research Projects 1. Archival, Paleographic and Diplomatic Research The objective of this project is the assessment and promotion of Byzantine and post-Byzantine documents in Greek and other languages, aiming at the publication and the exploitation of the material for various purposes. 2. Institutions, Society, Internal and Foreign Policy of Byzantium A technologically more advanced version of the formerly Byzantine History Data Bank. It has produced entries about events of Byzantine history, 3. Byzantium and the World of the Slavs and the Balkans Aims to explore Byzantiums interactions with neighbouring cultures (Slavs, Balkans). 4.The Historical Geography of the Greek Region Aims to study and examine the Byzantine sources and archaeological remains with a view to producing a historical and geographical study for each region. 5. Byzantium and the West The purpose of the programme is to study the relations of the Byzantine world and especially of the Byzantine Greeks with the people of Western Europe up to the end of the 16th century.

6. Everyday and Social Life in Byzantium The programme aims to explore aspects of Byzantine everyday life.

Activities Organization of academic events such as international conferences, symposia and colloquia followed by the publication of the proceedings. Publication of the annual journal Byzantina Symmeikta that contains symposium proceedings, monographs and results of the research programmes. The Historical Sciences Seminar supported by the staff of IBR is addressed to graduate and postgraduate students, aiming to give special knowledge and training in the fields of archival research, paleography and codicology. Publication of monographs and studies in Greece and abroad.

THE INSTITUTE OF BYZANTINE RESEARCH

The IBR was established in 1960 for the purpose of promoting the study of Byzantine history and civilization / to further and publish research in the areas of Byzantine studies / to present and promote research activities by scholars working in Byzantine studies and related fields. The Institute supports research programmes and related activities, such as international conferences, special lectures, symposia and colloquia. History and literary studies are the main research areas of the Institute, whereas archaeology and history of art are the theoretical and practical methodological tools/offer supportive material/ for the successful accomplishment of its various projects. The results of research activity at the IBR are disseminated through a variety of print and online publications, as well as lectures, seminars and other events.

Byzantium and the World of the Slavs and the Balkans The programme aims to explore Byzantiums interactions with neighbouring cultures (Slavs, Balkans) during the Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. 4.The Historical Geography of the Greek Region The programme aims to study and examine the Byzantine sources and archaeological remains with a view to producing a historical and geographical study for each region. 5. Byzantium and the West The purpose of the programme is to study the relations between the Byzantine world and the peoples of Western Europe up to the end of the 16th century. 6.
