Fanny Yolanda Lujan Silva A01260414 Appreciating the arts The dictionary defines aesthetics as the "science of beauty

and taste." Is it possible to judge art by a set of "scientific" principles? Is it desirable to do so? What should be the criteria for deciding what makes something a work of art? 1. How do you define the word "art"? Compare your definition with those of your classmates. How many different categories of art can you identify? Art is a way to express human feelings. I think everything can be art like a poem, a painting, a sculpture, a picture, a song, etc.

2. What are the criteria which make a work of art a classic? How would you rank these criteria? The criteria changes according to the kind of art, but essentially a work of art should be remarkable, with a lot of meaning and with an incredible technique. For me, the most important think in a work of art is the meaning because the art is about symbols and human feelings; I will rank these criteria first meaning, then remarkable and after artists technique. 3. Does a work of art need to have a meaning which can be explained in words or is art best appreciated only as a sensory experience? I think that if you felt an emotion you can actually explain it, so that emotion can become in words. For me is better that a work of art to have meaning which can be explained in words, but a lot of currents of art are emphasized in only sensory experience and they are very good. 4. Tell your classmates about your personal preferences in music. What is it about a particular musical style that you like most? Romantic Ballads and Music of 80s

5. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," is an adage which attests to the fact that people perceive beauty differently. Tell about a personal experience in which your idea of beauty differed from that of your friends or family. In high school everyone in my class should read a specific book that the teacher assigned. I just loved the book because the writer was honest and she specified every single awful event; and my other friend didnt like the book because she thought it was cruel. I saw a beauty in that book but she didnt it. 6. How has your own perception of artistic beauty evolved? Have you ever had the experience of suddenly seeing the beauty in something which you previously had considered to be of little or no artistic worth? When I was little I really hated classic music

but now that Im older I really appreciate classic music especially piano 7. All forms of the arts are often treated as "extras" in primary and secondary school curricula. Should they receive greater emphasis? Justify your opinion. I dont think arts should receive greater emphasis because the classes that really matter are Language, Math and computation. Arts and sports are extras 8. Is it possible to conceive of a human society without artistic creations? Why or why not? Does artistic expression flourish more in some societies than in others? Why? It is impossible to conceive of a human society without artistic creations because the art can tells us so much about a culture. The artistic expression have flourish equally in all the societies because every single one have a kind of art, in the whole world each society has a kind of art the distingue that society.
