Editors Note
As the cover page indicates, schools dominate much of this months Matters. Theres not only a lot happening in our local schools, but also a lot of fund-raising going on to support it. And its clear that the need for money has provoked some interesting ideas about how to persuade people to hand it over. On page 6, theres an announcement about what might seem like an unrelated event: the AGM of the Maungaturoto Centennial Community Centre Hall Committee on September 19th. Now I know what sight of the letters AGM does to most of us and I have to say that the long name of said committee doesnt exactly echo with excitement. But dont turn over just yet. Theres an important issue here. When it was built, the Centennial Hall (lets stick to that more manageable name) was a symbol of what the community could achieve, and it had an important role to serve. Since it was handed back to the town by the Council, however, it has been struggling. One reason is the excessive level of rates that it bears, but another is that its place in the community seems to have been lost. As a consequence, a rather depressing and vicious circle has formed, in which a few dedicated people try to raise money to keep the hall going so that it will still be there next year so that they can then raise more money and so on. Clearly thats not the way it should be. If we want people to give their time to keeping the hall going, we need to decide first what we want it for. Thats not a question a committee should answer: its up to the community to speak. And thats the purpose of the AGM to hear the community voice. But lets be clear. The topic of discussion shouldnt be: Weve got a hall how can we fund it? That merely leads us back to where we are trying to invent uses for it, just to keep it going. Nor will reminiscences about the past get us very far; for the world is different now. The question is this: Given what already exists in the town (including the facilities at the Country Club and RSA) what added value can the hall provide? Answer that, and we can then discuss how to extract that value and fund the hall in the process. So, why not go along to the meeting on 19th and have your say. Or, if you cant attend, pass a note to one of the committee. But whatever you do, dont just assume that its someone elses problem!

Another more unusual part of the fundraising campaign is a calf rearing scheme. Farmers agree to rear a calf and then sell it with all profits being contributed toward the primary school fundraising efforts. There is a range of prizes on offer for those participating and so far seven farmers have signed up to the scheme. The primary school is hoping to add to this before the end of the calving season and farmers willing to participate are being asked to telephone Kim Allen on 09 431 8445 to register.

May meeting
Our May speaker was one of the most interesting and poignant we have had. Tony Mundell told us about his last 30 years of employment and his experiences as a Psychopaedic Nurse. It was a story of empathy, caring and humour, and when he related his experiences with some of these young, disabled people, his hushed audience shed a few silent tears. We appreciated his talk very much and it showed us another side of this very nice gentle man.

Well its almost spring! Are you over the rain yet? It is excellent to report that our callout numbers are down from this time last year. This must mean that everyone is being more fire-safe and taking care out on the roads. Thank you from all the Team at Maungaturoto brigade. On the 18th July, we had a house fire that was caused by faulty electrical equipment, The occupants rung us and thanked us for saving 80% of their possessions, This is an extremely good result considering that we had to travel 25 km to get to the fire. Good work team! Stay safe and enjoy spring as the warmer weather comes.

Roll Growth Recently we have had significant growth in the number of new entrant c hildren enrolling a t Maunga turoto Pri mary Sc hool. The roll increase has resul ted in class numbers growing above 20 students, which is not ideal for new entrant classes. We are expec ting up to another 20 new entrant enrol ments between now and the end of term 4. Wi th our current class set up, this would resul t in room 5 and 6 class sizes growing to 30 students. The Boa rd of Trustees ha ve agreed to appoint another teacher for term 4 in 2012. This will allow us to reduce the current class size for Rooms 5 and 6. We will be creating a class of Year 1 children tha t will be based in Room 10, which is loca ted next to the library. The Room 10 c hildren will be taught by Mrs Sally Steiner. Sally has a very good understand ing and knowledge of the junior school progra mmes and she will be working very closely with the other junior teachers a s part of the Junior Learning Tea m. If you have a c hild who is due to start with us in 2013, please contac t the sc hool office to complete a pre-enrol ment form. This will help us to prepare for your childs arrival.
Lost Property Every term our lost property increases drama tically. This usually leaves us wi th no c hoice but to gi ve i t all away. There is li terally hundreds of dollars worth of clothing lef t behind at school eac h term. This emphasises the need to plea se na mes on all clothing/shoes, lunch boxes etc. We hold up all clothing on a Friday afternoon a t assembly and you will be surpri sed how many children do not recognise their clothing. The lost property is loca ted through the school office: please feel free to come any ti me to see if anything belongs to your child.

Students from Maungaturoto, Kaiwaka, Paparoa, Mangawhai, Matakohe and Waipu attended Otamatea High Schools interactive Open Day. There were also several families from even further afield. Otamateas Kapa Haka Roopu led the powhiri, while Katarina Maxwell and Ihaka Reid performed the himene and whaikorero. The Deputy Principal, Roy Fletcher, welcomed everyone, and explained the schools vision of Todays Learners, Tomorrows Leaders and the dominant values of respect and integrity. Otamatea High Schools vision of leadership is an inclusive one, where everyone can be a leader by setting a positive example to others. He went on the explain that the schools educational philosophy is Catering for the learning needs of every student. The visiting students were then guided on an interactive journey around the school by Year 13 students, who were keen to share their positive experiences with their enthusiastic charges. Experiences included decorating cup cakes, playing musical instruments and art. Each of the learning areas was visited. In science, students completed an experiment, in drama fun improvisations. In art they made a wall plaque. They also had an introduction to Otamateas unique Bruce ball in the gymnasium. In maths they worked on a computer programme. They experienced taha Maori through Maori games. In the interval they returned to the hall to be treated to a concert from Vybes, Otamateas successful Rockquest band. Both parents and students were fascinated by the displays in the hall particularly those from English, Social Science, Science and Technology. At the end of the day some of the parents and students took the opportunity to visit the Aviation Academy and were incredulous when the director, Paul Morrison, explained that high school students were building an aeroplane. The final act for the visitors was to get a sausage which was cooked by some of the Year 13 students. An excellent day was had by the Otamatea High School students and all of the visiting students left talking enthusiastically about their experience.

Theres a little way to go yet, before this area is complete. It will take time, of course, for everything to get established and the flowers to bloom though already some of the rhodos are in flower, bringing a lovely splash of colour to the garden. But the picture we all started off with (right) of what we were aiming for no longer looks like just a dream. Were on the way! Thanks go to everyone whos been involvedand most of all Richard and Diana for their tireless enthusiasm and hard work.

. So attention turns to the main street and we see progress at the wharf site
With Whaka Street now in a state where it can rest a while, to give the plants a chance to settle in, attention has turned to the next area on our list: between St John and Dreams.
Again, our starting point is the set of plans which Richard and Diana drew up for us (above). These can be seen in the windows of the Library and Dreams). During the working bee on August 18th, an eager team of helpers took out some of the untidy trees, and cleared most of the garden areas, ready for the next phase (photos, right). This is planned for another major working bee on 15th and 16th September, when the old concrete will be cut out and the new concrete areas laid. That makes it a crucial weekendso if you can, come along and help!
Meanwhile, Albie and his 150-Up team have been making significant progress on the wharf site. The mass of weeds and undergrowth has been cleared out, flaxes planted, and some heavy-duty work done to create a parking area and lookout (photo left). The next step is to obtain resource consent, so that construction of the wharf can start.

The new development of six new OYO units is nearing completion; major construction has nearly finished , The final landscaping is waiting for the weather to co-operate. Three units have been sold and are occupied, and we welcome these new residents to the village. The fourth unit has been sold and will be occupied towards the end of the month. That leaves two units waiting for an owner. Take a drive up Riverview Place and check out the view . The quality of the workmanship is a credit to all concerned. Our local contractors, Brogan Builders, Kaipara Plumbing, Hubands and Extreme Joinery have helped to create a really nice place to live, and with the adjacent rest home and the caring staff, future security and wellbeing is assured. We have had a very busy month in August. We had a flax weaving workshop and ha ve had more colour themed days. One of these was devoted to ma (whi te), which involved making sushi . Another was pango (black): cupcake decorating with black coconut, icing and choc decora tions. Others were kowhai (yellow), pakaka (brown), and kakariki (green) all with play-dough made to ma tch. Each session has joined in with the Pri mary Schools Jump Ja m Sessions and we also had a class visi t to Room 6 and Mrs Wilson. We wish a happy 5th birthday to Mihi although your ti me with us was short, we will miss you and we wish you all the best for sc hool! We welcome Julia with Manu and Amelia, and Amy with Tania. Two months ago, you all received a Civil Defence sheet to complete and a yellow booklet (Get ready, Get thru), which gave some hints of what to do in an emergency. It is hoped that by now you have worked out a telephone network within your area (i.e. your neighbours), so that you can support each other should the need arise. On Wednesday, 26 th September, the New Zealand Shakeout takes place. At 9.26 am on that date, it is suggested that you practice the Drop, Cover and Hold drill. Your local committee will be checking its telephone tree at that time, and it may be a good time to implement your own telephone trees and think about all your neighbours and any special needs they may have. You can find more information on the website: www.getthru.govt.nz. While this promotion is earthquake-related, it would also be a good opportunity for you to practise your emergency response. The Kauri Museum has boosted both its national and international reputation recently. At the annual Grand Pacific Tours Award ceremony in Melbourne, it was named Favourite North Island Attraction. This is the second time that the museum has won the award: it was also successful in 2007-8. Meanwhile Real Town Pies of Maungaturoto were making their name amongst more than 440 bakers judged in the Bakels New Zealand Supreme Pie Award. Entered in to the Caf and Boutique section of the contest, they achieved a top-ten finish with one of those creamy chicken pies that youve no doubt already tried and loved!
