Founded in 1972 by Leonard and Brooks Firestone, Firestone Vineyard is considered one of the Legacy wineries of Santa Barbara County. With more than 35 years of family stewardship, the Firestone brand became synonymous with high quality wines and the uniqueness of the Santa Ynez Valley wine growing region. This commitment set the standard for the diversity of wineries that joined the community over the years along the Foxen Wine Trail. Stewardship of Firestone Vineyard became the responsibility of Bill Foley when he purchased the property in 2007. Like the Firestone family, Bill recognized Santa Barbara County as the ideal location for the production of world class wines. Bill has continued to the tradition in striving for the very best vineyard management and cutting edge winemaking to move the winery forward. The vineyard focuses on optimal balance in the vines, yielding wines that are brightly flavored, crisp and delicious. Estate Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah vineyards are located on a series of mesas that have gravelly sub-soils, ideally oriented for perfect exposure. Included on the property of some of the oldest plantings of Riesling, giving the benefits of maturity and balance to the wine. Guiding the winemaking efforts is Paul Warson. Paul joined the Firestone operation in 2009 after spending the previous fourteen years in Napa Valley. Paul was most recently winemaker for Trefethen Family Vineyards, where he worked for nine years. Before that Paul spent time forging his winemaking skills at Chateau Potelle on Mt. Veeder, Rosemount Estate Winery in New South Wales, Australia and Newton Vineyards in the Spring Mountain District of Napa Valley. Experiencing a broad range of winemaking styles and philosophies, Paul brings a unique perspective to the winemaking team, helping to move Firestone Vineyard forward.

Among the new projects Paul is overseeing is a recent vineyard planting for a new ultrapremium label called Proximity Twenty Six. Named after the distance from the vineyard site to the Pacific Ocean that influences the climate surrounding the vineyard, the new planning on the Firestone Vineyard property is collection of the traditional red Bordeaux varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec takes advantage of the unique microclimate found on the high mesa near the winery itself to produce exceptional, high quality fruit for this limited bottling. Included in the resources for this wine will be select blocks in the Firestone Vineyard dedicated and farmed specifically for Proximity. The 2009 inaugural release of Proximity recently received 93 points from the Wine Enthusiast and will soon be offered for tasting later this fall as part of a new reserve tasting program in the Firestone Vineyard tasting room. Joining the line-up for this unique sit down tasting program will be the new 2009 vintage of our Chairman Series Cabernet Sauvignon and Lineage, as well as some small lot wines like Malbec and Cabernet Franc that are only available for purchase at the winery. Also unique to the offerings at the Firestone Vineyard Hospitality Center is a complimentary tour of the winemaking facility and vineyards. These tours are offered at 11:15 a.m., 1:15 and 3:15 p.m. daily and will give visitors an insight into the winemaking process.

No Taste Like Home in California Wine Country

Jeanette Trompeter has always been a California girl at heart. Born in San Luis Obispo County, she attended Cal Poly and started her career in journalism at KSBY. Though she loved exploring new territory as a news anchor in Iowa and Minnesota, she always longed to come home to the Central Coast. While living back East, Jeanette was an unofficial ambassador for the Central Coast wine country, and her go-to gifts for friends and colleagues were always hand-picked selections of Central Coast wines. Most folks back there only know Napa and Sonoma, so when they would try our wines, they would just go crazy at how good they are. Thats when the idea for a rotating wine club started brewing for Jeanette. With long-time friend and former Cal Poly roommate Janice Kelsey, she launched RubyShoesWine.com to introduce wine lovers to the world-class wines, breath-taking beauty and down-home charm of Central Coast wine country. Jeanette picks a different winery four times a year to profile, or as she says, introduce. Like most wine clubs, members get regular shipments of wine delivered to their door. But unlike others, each shipment is from a different Central Coast winery. We want to make the introduction, and if people like the wines I choose, theyll go back and order more. Featured wineries not only offer up great wines, but must also be a nice place to visit. I want them to be places I would tell friends to go visit. I want people to know where their wine comes from and what kind of people they are. If I send someone to a winery, I want to feel confident theyll be treated like friends no matter who they are. I think thats whats special about our wine country. RubyShoesWine.com also has an online store, featuring wines, art

and other locally made goods, all hand-selected by Jeanette. It also features local hotels and activities where members receive discounts. Jeanette has found a lot of locals are enjoying the concept of a rotating club, as well. Weve decided to do our own pickup parties at each featured winery because we have so many locals in the club. Its a great way for people who live here to keep discovering all the gems right in their own backyard. There really is no taste like home! For more information or to sign up for the wine club, go to the website at www.RubyShoesWine.com.

PREFERRED TASTING ROOM

JADA
Evolution, Not a Revolution . . .
BY miCHael CerviN

JADA WINERY & VINEYARD open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 5620 vineyard Drive, off Highway 46 West, Paso robles The tasting menu includes a wine cheese pairing with all their wines. (805) 226-4200 | www.jadavineyard.com

Since its inception in 1999, Jada Vineyard & Winery has continued a dramatic evolution as a producer of premium Rhne and Bordeaux-style wines. Originally established from barley fields as a pure vineyard with little aspiration of producing wine, it soon became obvious that this was no average terroir. The site is hilly, underscored by a variety of different aspects, with a shallow topsoil of clay and deep deposits of limestone and rocks of oceanic origin. It is also moderated dramatically in the summertime by cooling coastal breezes, tempering the abundant sunshine of the region. Daily temperatures are five degrees cooler than surrounding vineyards in the summer months and warmer in the fall by a similar margin, allows for a long, balanced growing season. Typically, Jada vineyard is one of the last vineyards harvested in its pocket of the Templeton Gap along the Santa Lucia Highlands. Additionally, as a region with limited water resources, blocks could be farmed dry or with deficit irrigation (depending on the varietal type), from an underwater aquifer lacing a prominent ridge where three different soil complexes converge on the 90 acre estate. In 2005, it became apparent that it was going to be a unique, if not phenomenal, vintage. Acquiring the services of a talented consultant winemaker and taking time off from his day job as a cardiac surgeon, Jack Messina, the owner, embarked on what would become Jadas inaugural vintage. They have never looked back. A state-of-the-art production facility and winery would soon follow with the tasting room officially opening in 2008. Four years later, with 2,000 active wine club members and numerous award-winning wines, including last years Best of Class Rhne winner at the American Fine Wine Festival, Jada has realized another milestone. It is simply called WCS, recalling the understated elegance for which Jada has become known. WCS is an exclusive, ultra-premium series of single-varietal Jada wines available only through Jadas wine club. Jada will begin offering special sneak previews in their tasting room of the first WCS wines at various times through the fall and spring to anyone visiting their tasting room to build on the excitement they have received from the recent announcement of these wines. Each year, the WCS selections will vary by varietal, but there will always be one WCS Rhne and WCS Bordeaux. During the inaugural vintage, David Galizgnato, Jadas acclaimed winemaker, has focused on making two WCS selections 147 cases of WCS Cabernet Sauvignon and 144 cases of WCS Syrah. The preliminary plan for the 2012 vintage will be a WCS Petit Verdot and WCS Tannat. All of Jadas wines are 100% estate. WCS builds on their focus for smalllot, limited-production wines by selecting some of the best lots and marrying them with the best barrel from a single cooper. Every vintage, a different French cooper will be showcased. In its inaugural vintage, Jada used 100% new French Oak with Ermitage and Sylvain selected for

designation in the WCS Syrah and WCS Cabernet Sauvignon respectively. According to Jacks son, Joshua (one part of the brother-sister tandem overseeing Jada) Many people know their favorite varietal, but often they dont have a favorite barrel. As our winemaker always says, Barrels are a winemakers spice rack. Knowing the type of barrel you like married with the fruit profile you prefer goes a long way toward helping to identify the wines you might respond to. It is like asking a cook whats in this recipe? This is one step closer to knowing how we achieve the flavor profiles in our wines and which blocks and barrels you prefer here at Jada. Jack, and now his two children, have all become students of winemaking. Each has worked several harvests and Joshua will continue this tradition again during the 2012 vintage. The WCS wines highlight this perspective and are just another way they can share the knowledge imparted to them with their customers and wine club members. WCS stands for Wine Connoisseur Series or Winemakers Cooper Select or even just Wine Club Series. As Josh admits, There were a lot of debates over the WCS acronym. Our customers seem to have a very personal relationship with our wines and we love that so we encourage people to come up with their own meanings for the WCS series. WCS is the next evolution in Jadas obsession for quality over

quantity. According to Josh, 2011 was truly a milestone year for us, culminating with the hiring of David Galzignato. A major piece in their evolution as a premium producer has been to recruit a full-time, passionate, obsessed winemaker one as obsessed as the Messina family about producing incredible, worldclass wines. At the start of 2011, after an exhaustive national search, Jack persuaded David Galzignato of Paraduxx/Duckhorn, Lewis Cellars, and Charles Krugs Reserve program fame to join Jada. One of the first initiatives undergone by David was making Jada a 100% gravityflow, no-pump facility. With that accomplished, Jada realized another milestone under Davids guidance by dry farming certain blocks and reducing average crop yields to 1-3 tons/acre to intensify color, flavor and aromatics. At the same time, they advanced their biologic approach with the use of natural fertilizers whose origins were similar to the very rocks found in the ground the oceans. David also spearheaded Jadas now biennial practice of traveling to France to hand select the French oak for their barrels. Each WCS wine will highlight the special attributes of and the rich history belonging to thesedifferent cooperages. It is a clich to say it has been an evolution, but it really has, Joshua says. I can taste it across our entire portfolio from our signature Hells Kitchen blend to our Malstria label to our WCS. It is an exciting time to be sharing these wines with our customers.

ALLISON LEVINE

Harvest Party
Join Clautiere for their on October 20th at 7 p.m. The cost is $30 per person (free for wine club members).
The Harvest Party is a costume party, so pick your costume and be prepared to have fun!

CLAUTIERE VINEYARD open Thursday - monday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. 1340 Penman springs road in Paso robles (805) 237-3789 | www.clautiere.com www.facebook/clautierevineyard

Entering the ornate gates of Clautiere Vineyard you quickly realize you are in for a different wine tasting experience. It starts the moment you drive by the bent steel fence and into the beautifully landscaped gardens with art that will make you smile. And it doesn't stop there, once you step through the tasting room doors, you enter a winery tasting room that is playful, whimsical and friendly. Clautiere Vineyard is named after its owners, Claudine Blackwell (aka Director of Fantasy) and Terry Brady (aka Director of Reality). Originally from Northern California, by way of Los Angeles, the couple bought the property in 1999 and today they have 57 acres planted with grapes. Dedicated to premium Rhne, Bordeaux and Port style wines, Clautiere is serious about their wine. With 13 grape varieties planted, they produce 16 different estate wines, for a total of 3000 cases. Their 2007 BDX was awarded both the Best Bordeaux Blend at the 2012 Critics Challenge International Wine Competition in San Diego as well as a Gold Medal at the 2012 Los Angeles International Wine & Spirits Competition, with an over-all score of 94. While they take their wine seriously, their vibrant and colorful tasting room is a place for fun and is like no other. The tasting room, opened in 2003, is a converted farm house originally built in the 1930s. Today, it is a place where people can don a hat or wig and find their child-heart, explains Operations Manager Susan West. Just past the tasting room is the Playroom where guests will find dozens of wigs and hats that they can try on and take photos with. Just outside of the tasting room, past the meditation garden is the converted barn, otherwise known as Clautiere Too. Clautiere Too is available for groups over 12 (people, that is). With fun mirrors and more wigs and hats to play with, it is a great place for large groups to taste wine and have fun. The fun with wigs began before they opened the tasting room. Claudine and Terry had started bringing wigs to parties after being inspired by friends. They found that with wigs, people of all ages relax and have fun. There is a transformation, Claudine explains, everyone engages and immediately becomes friends. It was only natural that their tasting room would be filled with the wigs for guests to connect with each other and embrace the spirit of the winery. Tastings are $10 per person and guests enjoy six wines paired with six different gourmet cheeses. The wine list rotates every month so every time you return, you will taste a different line-up of wines and cheeses.

WINE COUNTRY DINING

Paso Robles Inn Steakhouse
BY allisoN leviNe

Paso Robles Inn Steakhouse has been a favorite place for locals and visitors for more than 50 years, but their history dates even further back. Sitting on top of natural sulfur springs, the El Paso de Robles Hotel was opened in 1891. Built in the Victorian style, the hotel stood as a fortress in the small town of Paso Robles and was the destination of the day. But, the golden era of the El Paso de Robles Hotel and Hot Springs came to an end after a major fire in 1940 burned down everything except the Grand Ballroom. The Paso Robles Inn was reopened in 1942 as a modern bungalow-style hotel with surrounding gardens. While the inn was rich in Paso history, it did not maintain its landmark status until the Martin family bought the property in 1999 and restored it to its original beauty, including the original Grand Ballroom. Despite losing one building in the 2003 earthquake, the property currently offers 30 deluxe spa hotel rooms and six two-bedroom suites, all with mineral spring tubs in the rooms. With an outdoor patio and fire-pit tables overlooking the gardens, Paso Robles Inn Steakhouse, which was remodeled last fall, is a classic steakhouse with a modern twist. Offering a diverse menu, the restaurant has access to great resources, including seafood, produce from the Santa Maria Valley and other artisan products. The chefs regularly go to the farmers market to buy ingredients for the recently revised family-friendly menu which offers more options for the budget-conscious visitor. Offering breakfast, lunch and dinner, some of the popular dishes are the halibut soft tacos, the pulled pork sandwich and the Santa Mariastyle BBQ. The wine list features an extensive selection of Central Coast wines. In partnership with Tobin James Winery, they feature a Westside Zinfandel which is served directly from stainless steel tanks into a decanter. Check out Prime Rib Wednesday where you can get a 10-oz

prime rib with potato of choice and mixed green salad for $19.95 or a prime rib sandwich and potato for $12.95. And, if you stop at the Paso Robles Steakhouse after a day of wine tasting in the area, you will receive complimentary corkage on your first bottle of any San Luis Obispo County wine.

VINA ROBLES
European Inspired, California Comfortable
BY miCHael CerviN

Owner Hans Nef with managing partner Hans-R. Michel

VINA ROBLES 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. summer | 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Winter 3700 mill road, (just off Highway 46 east) in Paso robles (805) 227-4812 | www.vinarobles.com

Its best to mark your calendars now for this upcoming and popular event:

Swiss Days at Vina Robles October 20th and 21st

A culinary journey through Switzerland. There will be traditional Swiss fare such as Cervelat and Bratwurst sausages, and lplermagronen (an Alpine take on mac n cheese) for just $10. Sunday, October 21st its the Grape Stomp and Luncheon where you learn how to grow, pick and stomp the perfect grapes, ending with lunch among the vines. Tickets are $40.

Though Switzerland has their own wine industry dating back to when the Romans planted grapes along Lake Geneva, you can get Swiss hospitality a lot faster in Paso Robles. Vina Robles Winery, owned by Swiss entrepreneur Hans Nef, is a little bit of Europe on the California Coast. We are a family-owned and operated winery dedicated to crafting wines that combine the elegance and balance of European wines with the bold flavors of our estate vineyards in Paso Robles, says Simone Michel, marketing director for Vina Robles. Here, we bring our Swiss heritage to Californias Central Coast, where we unite the best of both experiences. And, experiences are the name of the game here. They offer a multitude of tasting options, more so than any other Paso Robles winery. There is daily complimentary tasting of a single wine chosen by winemaker Kevin Willenborg, as well as the Estate Tasting which features five wines grown from four estate vineyards for $7. The Reserve Tasting features the winerys Cuve Collection, encompassing three limited-edition red blends and two special releases for $10. The Petite Sirah Tasting focuses on their flagship variety and gives you four different Petite Sirahs and a dessert wine for a mere $12. Better still this particular flight can be paired with premium, hand-made chocolate truffles for $18 (I can hear you oohhing). Then there is the Sit-Down Wine and Cheese Experience; the first winery in Paso Robles to offer this. Five artisan cheeses are matched with special release wines. There is also the Gourmet Lunch Tasting which is five wines followed by a gourmet lunch prepared by Kellys Grill at Hunter Ranch Golf Course (a longtime and well loved chef here in Paso). Her menu option includes a sandwich or salad, fresh fruit, home-made potato chips and a cookie, and vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available as well. As if thats not enough, there is also an Art Gallery at Vina Robles which hosts rotating exhibits of local and regional artists, and their Saturday Live Music Series means you can languidly spend time with wine, music and your friends. And, with the addition of a new winemaker, Vina Robles has positioned itself as the go-to stop for wine and entertainment. Vina Robles brought winemaking veteran Kevin Willenborg onto the scene. Willenborg has extensive winemaking experience in regions such as Bordeaux, Napa Valley, Sonoma, British Columbias Okanagan Valley, as well as Santa Barbara. He started with an internship at legendary Chateau Petrus in France then has held key winemaking roles at Louis M. Martini, Cedar Creek Estate in Canada and Firestone Vineyard. Each wine has its own life. That life begins with the planting and development of the vines, Willenborg says. It is then transferred from the earth through the vine as the grapes are harvested, crushed, fermented into wine and eventually bottled. Experience Swiss hospitality firsthand and visit Vina Robles.

Quality Craft Beers from Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co.

This family-owned brewery started by Jim and Jaime Dietenhofer of Los Olivos, has been life-long dream in the making. Harnessing their Bavarian heritage the Dietenhofers wanted to create a craft brewery in the Santa Ynez Valley that focused on creating the highest quality beer and help add to a growing hop culture in the Central Coast. Utilizing the skill sets from award-winning head brewer A.J. Stoll and his brew team, Figueroa Mountain Brewing has been able to create a line-up of seven quality craft beers (soon to be more). The brew team has been able to earn multiple medals including three golds in a very short period of time (open since 2010). In addition to selling beer in draft and bottles on the open market, Figueroa Mountain Brewery has a tap room that puts the patrons a few feet away from the brewing action. Complete with a state-of-theart stainless brewing system, customers can enjoy the pint of beer that was made in the same room and epitomizes freshness. An experience that includes live music on Fridays, and a complete food and wine list. Beer lovers may also enjoy the Fig Mtn Beer truck complete with taps on the side ready to pour. The truck can be seen at a large list of events throughout the Central Coast. iNTelliGeNCe For THe WiNe CoNsUmer by Len Napolitano

What is tannin?
Tannin is a naturally occurring chemical compound in wine that gives a dry red wine texture. Its mouth-drying effect, balanced with ample fruit, creates a wine of firm structure that can equalize the effective weight in the mouth of a rich red wine. The four basic wine components are fruit, alcohol, acidity and tannin. Generally speaking, the proper balance of all four define a quality wine. Tannins contribute to a wines feel in the mouth, and also provide a stabilizing effect in the wine by helping it to age longer and protecting its aroma and flavor over time. A comparable parallel of the astringent component that tannin contributes to wine is the tannin in a cup of hot tea. When the tea cools down, the mouth-drying effect of tannin is more evident. Typically, a young red wine, like cabernet sauvignon, will have more of this harsh tannin, whereas a mature wines tannin has lessened and softened over time, and more pure fruit flavor is exposed. A red wine is said to be at its peak when it has reached a perfect balance of tannin and fruit. The specific point in time in the life of a wine when this balance occurs varies with every wine, and is mostly unpredictable. The very best wines in the world will take years, and sometimes decades to evolve. Tannin is sometimes described as green, which some consider to be a fault in a wine. Green tannins have an impact on the palate much like eating an underipe fruit, like a very green banana. It can be attributable to growing seasons with insufficient warmth to full ripen the grapes, or in very rainy growing seasons. This is not usually a problem in wine regions known for its long, hot summers, but is more likely to be an issue in cool, coastal regions. Tannin in wine comes from two sources. Some originate from the extended period of time that grapes are in contact with its skins. This long-term contact with the skins, in addition to the grapes seeds and stems, is the primary source of the tannin in the final wine product. A white wine will have only a few hours or less in contact with its grape skins during fermentation, while a red wine will remain in contact with its skins for days, or until the winemaker extracts enough color. That is why tannin is a subject in the discussion of red wine, not white. Another source of tannin comes from the wood of the oak barrels in which the wine is aged. The amount of structure contributed to the wine from oak barrels will vary greatly and depends mostly on the age of the barrel, the type of oak, type of toasting and length of time in barrel.

WINEMAKER PROFILE

DON BRADY
Robert Hall Winery
Now in his twelfth year of crafting Robert Hall Wines, Don Brady is looking forward to another great vintage. Brady develops the wines to reflect the essence of Paso Robles by including the top varietals grown in the area from some of the regions best vineyards and this year the crop is looking extremely good. Our on-going relationships with Paso Robles growers enable us to take advantage of the diversity the area offers to create wines with character and style. Our estate vineyards continue to be the cornerstone of our product offering with Cabernet Sauvignon accounting for over half of the winerys production. This vintage is shaping up to be very promising. The vines set fruit at an ideal level and then perfect weather resulted in a long growing season. The winery recently expanded its tank and barrel capacity in anticipation of increasing case production to fulfill the demands of national distribution. In addition to the wines made for distribution, Brady and his team at Robert Hall produce reserve and tasting room only wines in limited production. According to Brady, it is understanding the vineyards that helps him deliver a consistent house style that is food friendly and age worthy. From budbreak to harvest, he can frequently be found out inspecting the vines and monitoring the fruit development. With so many years of sourcing fruit from the same vineyards he is able to determine what each individual block will deliver. Over time he has gotten to know the personality of each block and by blending fruit harvested from different vineyards he is able to take advantage of the diversity. His winemaking philosophy is to showcase what the fruit delivers while interfering as little as possible. The primary job for us as far as winemaking goes is not to mess it up. With his long history of making wine for multiple labels in both Texas and California, Brady has a wealth of winemaking expertise to apply. Highlights of his career include being awarded the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Associations highest honor known as the Louis F Qualia Award, . being named the Central Coast Winemaker of the Year Award by the California Mid-State Fair, and also receiving the Golden State Winery of the Year by the California State Fair. His wines have been served to Presidents Ronald Regan and George Bush in addition to English royalty Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles. When it comes to giving credit to the success at Robert Hall Winery, Brady is quick to mention his winemaking team. The team has seen very little staff changes over the past 12 years and he has come to rely on them to execute the plan with very little instruction. Cellar Master Juan Contreras joined Robert Hall during the first harvest and Assistant Winemaker, Kevin Johansing, started several years ago as a harvest intern. Together with a team of cellar workers who have all been in place for no less than three years, they consistently deliver The Essence of Paso Robles vintage after vintage.

ARCADIAN 1515 east Chestnut ave, suite B, lompoc | open daily 11am-5pm 805-737-3900, www.arcadianwinery.com Inspired by the great traditions of Burgundian winemaking, Joseph Davis has been making Arcadian Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah in California's Central Coast region since 1996. Using French artisan methods and hands-on vineyard management, Joe's Arcadian label consistently receives high marks from the world's most respected wine writers. JALAMA WINES 308 North 9th st, C, lompoc 805-735-8937, www.jalamawines.com Friday-sunday 12-5pm, or by appointment Winemaker Mark Cargasacchi specializes in Pinot Noir and Syrah from select vineyards throughout Santa Barbara County.

Kimberly and Brian Loring

Loring Wine Company

The brother and sister team of Brian and Kimberly Loring make a wide array of Pinots and Chardonnays from some of the top vineyards in California. Their list of sources read like a whos who of California Pinot vineyards. Brian and Kimberly share all the duties at the winery owner, winemaker, truck driver, janitor, etc. and are able to produce about 7,000 cases a year. Since Brian and Kimberly prefer bigger, bolder, fruit-forward wines, thats what they produce. The wines are designed to be ready to drink right away no need to lay them down for years before consuming. The wines will age gracefully for up to seven or eight years, but hopefully youll try them young to experience the bright, vibrant fruit. Thats what sets the wines apart. Loring Pinots will match well with traditional pairings (salmon, chicken, pork) but also have the stuffing to pair up well with beef and lamb.

Wine Tasting in
SPECIALIZING IN SANTA BARBARA & CENTRAL COAST PINOT NOIRS

LOS OLIVOS
Tessa Marie Wines
Tessa Marie Parker worked her first harvest in 2005; she was 18 years old. Last year, nearly six harvests later, Tessa Marie launched her own wine brand and tasting room in picturesque Los Olivos. Inspired by her winemaker father, Eli Parker, Tessa Marie has adopted a handson approach with her wine brand. From the interior design of her tasting room, to the development of her brand portfolio, Tessa Marie has tailored her brand in such a way that it is a true reflection of her. Take her Sangiovese, for instance. Having long been a fan of Sangiovese, particularly as it expresses itself in the soils of California, Tessa Marie set out, early on, to find the best fruit sources for her Sangiovese. It has emerged as one of the stars of her wine portfolio. Balanced, with just the right amount of natural acidity, and showing a nice dollop of fruit, but not too much, the Tessa Marie Sangiovese speaks to the young winemakers penchant for wines of restraint and elegance. I enjoy wines mostly with food, so I make wines that complement a meal, rather than overwhelm it. The balance of Tessa Maries portfolio includes her Vermentino, another nod to her love of Italian varietals. This crisp, white wine was entirely aged in stainless steel and is the perfect accompaniment to raw oysters. The Coquette is Tessa Maries Syrah/Sangiovese blend, and, as its name might imply, its a lively, suggestive and fun red wine with sexy overtones of red raspberries and black currants. While she thrives in her small unassuming cellar, located in a nondescript industrial zone in Buellton, Tessa Marie also loves the time

she spends in the vineyard, where she can track the progress of the coming years harvest. She sources her Sangiovese from Honea, Camp 4 and Hampton Vineyards, her Syrah from Hampton and Camp 4 Vineyards, and her Vermentino from Camp 4 Vineyard. These vineyards are located in the famed Santa Ynez Valley appellation of Santa Barbara County. The balance of her fruit sources come from other small vineyards in Santa Barbara County. I love being out in the vineyard, says Tessa Marie. Unless youre willing to spend time in the vineyard, its really hard to understand the wine youll eventually be making. The vineyard teaches you how the wines will perform in the cellar. In many ways, I start making my wines while theyre still on the vine. Tessa Marie Wines Tasting Room is located at 2901 Grand Avenue, Suite C in Los Olivos and is open Thursday through Monday from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; (805) 688-6081. Conway Family Wines Deep Sea Tasting Room
Discover Oceanic Terroir

The inviting setting features an artisan crafted table, seats and benches constructed by the Conway brothers out of transformed French oak wine barrels. Visitors can enjoy a glass of wine out on the venues deck, which reveals a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean, Santa Barbara Harbor, Channel Islands and Riviera, with a glimpse of passing sea lions and pelicans. award-winning wines from the Conway Family Wine portfolio, including the acclaimed Rancho Arroyo Grande Mourvdre and a Deep Sea Chardonnay from the iconic Bien Nacido Vineyard. The tasting room hosts regular events such as a weekly happy hour, with a food and wine series planned for the winter months. The location offers a spectacular setting for parties, with the space available for private event rental. The Conway family of Santa Barbara welcome visitors to sample their Deep Sea wines, which strive to capture the maritime influence present in Californias most prominent coastal vineyards. The wines origins include estates composed of ancient sea beds, prominent with seashell fossils. The Conway Family Wines seashell logo is reminiscent of this oceanic terroir and represents their commitment to crafting quality wines.
