Schools
prepare
for the
new year
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Marlton Sun
As the summer comes to a
close, the schools in the area are
preparing to open their doors for
learning and a fresh start with
students.
Evesham Township
School District
The summer is coming to a
close, and students will soon be
returning to school. Various
changes have been made in the
district, including the way math
is being taught.
Our math program is chang-
ing this year from Everyday to
Math to a program called Math in
Focus. Its still math, but its a lit-
tle different way of teaching and
presenting it. Its used extensively
in Singapore and our teachers
have received some training and
well be applying that to grades
kindergarten through seventh

Emphasis on signing up for fall
programs through the townships
website was discussed at the Aug.
21 town council meeting.
Director of Recreation and
Senior Services Monica Vanden-
berg presented the review of
recreational programs for the fall
for ages ranging from 18 months
through senior citizens in the
township.
Thirty percent of the pro-
grams this fall will be new pro-
grams. The remaining will be
programs set to return, according
to Vandenberg.
Vandenberg created new pro-
gram books both available online
and in print available at the Blue
Barn, the center for the arts, the
library and the Gibson House.
The total cost of production was
approximately $700 to reproduce
1,000. The township ultimately
saved $30,000 by forgoing the
usual mailers of the booklet be-
tween the printing and postage
used to send them out.

4 THE MARLTON SUN
Evesham Township will host a
community wide cleanup day in-
volving Evesham residents and
businesses.
This years cleanup will focus
on removing litter from the tops
of storm water inlets in our
streets. Keeping these inlets clear
of debris is an important part of
the townships Storm Water Man-
agement Program and helps to re-
duce flooding during periods of
heavy rain.
Through this event, we hope to
not only help clean our environ-
ment, and improve on the quality
of life in our community, but also
educate our residents and busi-
nesses as to the importance of
disposing of litter and recycling
properly.
This years community wide
cleanup day is Saturday, Sept. 22,
form 8 a.m. and noon. During that
time, we are asking for help to col-
lect and remove litter and debris
from the top of the storm drain
water inlets. If you are short on
time, please volunteer to clean the
storm inlets closest to your home.
An email is required in regard
to notifying where you would like
to clean, and when finished, how
many total garbage bags of
trash/debris you collect (two
bags, a half bag, etc.) and the
number of volunteers.
We estimate that it will take
five minutes per storm drain. We
ask that you clear the tops of the
storm grates and 20 feet on both
sides of litter and debris. We will
provide the trash bags and gloves.
If you have a shovel, please use
it. We will try to provide shovels
to groups doing larger areas.
As an added incentive, at the
conclusion of the days cleanup
activity, the township will be serv-
ing light refreshments, provided
by some of our local merchants,
at Gibson House, 535 E. Main St.
Email Debbie Pease at
peased@evesham-nj.gov to re-
quest a specific area in which to
work. Include contact informa-
tion, and if you will be working
as part of a group of volunteers,
as an individual, or as a family.

Simone is seen in a cheetah outfit for Halloween Day at Liber-

and go trick or treating around camp. On Halloween Day, the
campers also go through the Haunted Trail, a trail in the woods
transformed into a spooky path for scaring. Simone can also
enjoy electives at Liberty Lake Day Camp, such as playing on
the giant water trampoline, learning how to survive off the land
in the survival skills elective and more. At Liberty Lake, Si-

Unique experience at Liberty Lake
grade in Sept. and eighth grade the follow-
ing year, said John Scavelli, Jr., superin-
tendent of schools.
Following budget work in the winter,
transportation solutions have helped cut
down the budget for the upcoming year.
We did a lot of our budget work over
last winter and anything we had done this
winter we have already gone through a lot
of. One of the biggest areas is transporta-
tion. We reduced the number of routes we
used which helped save us money in the
budget, Scavelli said. As far as what the
taxpayers actually pay for, the cost has
gone down the past couple of years. Weve
reduced what we ask for.
Teachers and staff will be following the
state-wide procedure on dealing with bul-
lies and handling all situations that arise,
ensuring childrens safety.
We comply with the law, with the new
anti-bullying in effect. When we get a com-
plaint on harassment or bullying, we re-
view it to see if bullying actually hap-
pened, and follow the code of conduct ap-
propriate for the child. It has to be motivat-
ed by actual or perceived characteristic.
For example, race, gender, sexual orienta-
tion. If thats not the motivating factor it
doesnt follow the HIB content and isnt
considered bullying. Just because it doesnt
fall under the code doesnt mean it isnt
dealt with. All the cases are looked into,
Scavelli said.
Overall, the district is prepared to take
on another successful school year and start
off on the right foot.
We look forward to another successful
year. We welcome back our students and
parents. As always they can visit our web-
site or call the school, Scavelli said.
Cherokee High School
Cherokee High School received physical
changes in addition to curricular changes
to the school.
The bleachers were renovated, in addi-
tion to an improved school store classroom.
Other cafeteria modifications will be
seen on the lunch trays. My Plate stan-
dards for students will continue to meet the
standards.
We comply with all federal and state
standards, we are always expanding
healthy food options. We are implementing
the USDA My Plate five components for
each lunch, said Superintendent of
Schools Dr. Carol Birnbohm.

ith schools preparing to
open their doors soon, now
is a good time to talk about
the upcoming academic year.
At The Sun, were all about commu-
nity news, which, of course, includes
covering the local school districts.
Well be at as many school board meet-
ings as possible and do our best to stay
on top of the hard news taxes,
budgets, elections and the like.
But we want to be able to bring our
readers so much more. To do that, we
need your help.
When students achieve in the class-
room, in the arts, in sports, etc., we
want to hear about it, so that we can
share that news with the entire com-
munity.
Making the honor roll to winning a
spelling bee, excelling in an extra-cur-
ricular activity, its all news to us.
Problem is, we dont always hear
about these accomplishments. Thats
where you come in.
If youre a parent, and your child
does something special, shoot us an
email. Include a photo, if possible.
If youre a teacher or principal, and
you have a special event coming up or
there is other news that your home-
town should know about, tell us about
it. If possible, well have a reporter
present to cover the event or write a
story and take photos. If not, well fig-
ure out a way to get your news into the
paper, one way or another.
Too often, the news is driven by
events that anger or sadden people.
Too often, the good work of young peo-
ple is ignored or, at the least, certainly
not celebrated the way it should be.
And there are a lot of young people
doing good these days.
We want to change that. We want to
let everyone in town know when
theres something positive going on,
when young people go beyond the ordi-
nary to help someone or have an out-
standing accomplishment.
Call, email or write. Just let us know
whats happening in your school so
that we can share it.

The emphasis is to really get
residents to go online, Vanden-
berg said.
Vandenberg took into consider-
ation the needs of the varying age
groups in addition to local busi-
nesses and what they offer in the
process of choosing programs the
township will run.
The objective is definitely not
to lose money. Revenue would be
nice, but to provide services local
businesses may not offer, Van-
denberg said.
Some of the programs avail-
able to Evesham residents in-
clude swimming and boxing, a
new program added.
The courses range from four to
12 weeks, typically one day a
week depending on the type of
class.
Baby boomers is new, boxing
is new, calligraphy, cardio core
and more and the citizens police
academy are all new programs,
Vandenberg said. De-cluttering
and de-stress are also adult pro-
grams getting away from the typi-
cal yoga and Pilates. Theyre still
there but these will be offered as
well, Vandenberg said.
In other news from the meet-
ing, the Knights of Columbus pre-
sented the township with $650
raised through various charities
and campaigns they ran to put
aside for the special needs chil-
dren of Evesham Township. The
amount will be added to the
$250,000 to reconstruct the play-
ground at Memorial Park.
The new park will be in compli-
ance with the Americans with
Disabilities Act, and bids will
begin in the upcoming months for
construction of the new play-
ground.
I would like to thank you for
all the continued support over the
years, said Vandenberg.
We thank you for going over
and above what normal residents
do. We really appreciate this. This
money will be put to good use,
said Mayor Randy Brown.
Additionally at the meeting,
council passed two ratifications
of the contracts for both the cleri-
cal union and public works, both
of which were without a contract
for 18 months.
We, Bill, myself, and Tom
Shanahan worked over many
months to create a contract that
was, number one, fair to the tax-
payers. And, number two, fair to
the employees, said Brown. We
think we arrived with the help of
our insurance company.

Students can look forward to
the return of the One Book, One

Maze Runner by James Dashner,
available online. And the pro-
gram and the No Place for Hate
program, an initiative created for
activities to support all students
and allow everyone feel appreciat-
ed; will be in effect according to
Birnbohm. The fall will also kick-
off with new posters highlighting
student leaders as upstanders
and not bystanders when wit-
nessing inappropriate or deroga-
tory comments in support of the
LRHSD Step Up and ID HIB pro-
gram.
The bullying policy was devel-
oped to align with the Anti-Bully-
ing Bill of Rights of New Jersey.
The investigation procedure is
meticulously outlined on pages
nine, 10, and 11 of the policy. In
addition to the policy we have a
number of initiatives to fulfill our
school district mission encourag-
ing an appreciation for diversity
and individual differences creat-
ing a school climate conducive to
all students, Birnbohm said.
The 21st Century Learner Pilot
will be implemented with iPads
featured in the classroom. Vari-
ous teachers were trained over
the summer on how to incorpo-
rate the iPads as they develop 21st
Century learning skills, Birn-
bohm said.
Additional changes to the cur-
riculum are currently being
worked on, and are ready for the
upcoming school year.
We are in year 2 of a 7-year
curriculum revision cycle to de-
velop all curriculums using the
Understanding by Design model.
In 2011 we wrote and received
Board of Education approval for
24 different courses. This fall we
will be implementing those new
curriculums for algebra I, geome-
try, biology, U.S. history I, and
first year world languages, to
name a few, Birnbohm said.
Giving back to the community
is important, as well, with numer-
ous projects being implement
throughout the district.
The school district is highly
involved in volunteerism and
community service. Over the past
two years each high school coor-
dinated a Senior Day of Service
where senior students are dis-
patched to over 90 different loca-

Chief Michael Barth and the
Evesham Police Department re-
cently announced its intention to
use the full effects of roadside
checkpoints these summer and
fall seasons in the enforcement of
intoxicated and impaired drivers.
Driving while intoxicated is a
very serious violation of state law
and taken very seriously by the
entire Evesham Police Depart-
ment.
Police officers from this agency
will utilize appropriate traffic
control devices to facilitate road-
side checks in accordance with
departmental policy and law. Mo-
torists traveling on the selected
roadways will be asked to slow
down and even stop during the
course of a checkpoint. Police
will make every effort to limit
traffic delays. Motorists are asked
to be patient and cooperate with
such proactive measures in a po-
lice-public partnership on mak-
ing our roadways safer for every-
one. Our goal is to prevent mo-
torists from driving while intoxi-
cated.
Drunk driving enforcement
funds collected by the court sys-
tem will be used to fund these
DWI enforcement efforts.
The aforementioned check-
points may be operational during
the period of Aug. 27 through
Nov. 5.
The exact locations, dates, and
times will not be revealed. How-
ever, potential areas of operation
will be major roadways and thor-
oughfares that pass through the
town.
More specifically, roadways
such as state highway 73, state
highway 70, Maple Avenue,
Greentree Road and Marlton
Parkway will be utilized. All
checkpoints will be highly visible
at the time of execution. A letter
of request and justification
specifically indicating the exact
locations, dates, and times will be
on file with the chief of police.
Concerned citizens are always
encouraged to report erratic and
DWI driving to local authorities.
Police to use checkpoints
On Saturday, Sept. 15, The An-
thony J. Farrace Memorial Foun-
dation will be holding a benefit
dinner from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m.
aboard the Battleship NJ.
Ferrace was a candidate of the
U.S. Naval Academy, and would
have graduated this year. To
honor him and his enormous
sense of patriotism, the Farrace
family has chosen the battleship
for a celebration and fundraiser.
All proceeds from this event
will be used to promote safe and
responsible teen driving through
the Yellow Ribbon Club, a local
grassroots organization that sup-
ports our courageous troops.
Reckless teen driving affects all
ages and remains the number one
killer of teens across the nation.
