THE BEST WORKPLACES

Small and Medium Workplaces presented by Entrepreneur.com. This marks our eighth year ranking the best small and medium companies nationwide and the eighth year that weve seen an impressive roster of exceptional organizations dedicated to creating great workplaces. Recognizing the achievements of small- and medium-sized companies is extremely rewarding. SMEs play a crucial role in our economy, employing more than half of the private sector and shipping 30% of US exports. Given the recent global economic uncertainty, we were curious to see how these small and medium companies fared this year. Would we see a drop in enthusiasm and drive to create great workplaces? Would companies lose sight of the business benefits of a culture based on trust? It turns out that the answer is noinstead we saw an increase in creativity and strategy in the programs and policies these companies selected. These Best Workplaces have chosen programs that meet their employees needs, programs that bolster company values and in many cases, programs that take little in the way of resources to carry out but mean everything to their employees. So without further ado, Id like to introduce this years winners. Once again ACUITY has made the #1 position in the Medium category. Since this lists inception, this reigning champion has never fallen out of the top five. These world-class champs have continued to build upon their strengths and further drive sustained growth. Leapfrogging to the top spot this year in the Small category from #9 just twelve months ago is Snagajob. Snagajob puts its collaborative, mission-driven culture first and it shows in everything they do. Snagajob employees take pride in the fact that theirs is a company where employee ideas and opinions are heard and valued throughout the organization. Youll find details about these two as well as a glimpse into a day in the life of all the amazing companies ranked on this years list on the following pages. If you have any questions about these great workplaces or feel inspired to Create Yours just reach out. By phone, you can reach us at (415) 503-1234 or connect with us online at www.greatplacetowork.com. We believe that all companies, no matter their size, can be a great workplace and as a result improve their own bottom line and the society we share. Cheers,

Virginia-based online recruitment company skyrockets to the #1 spot this year, and is poised for a lot of growth over the foreseeable future they plan for roughly 100+ new hires in 2011. To insure their unique culture is kept intact, all current employees are trained in a variety of interviewing and assessment skills, up to a dozen of them eventually consulting with the CEO on the selection of each new hire. The Culture Squada representative group of snaggers from every departmentfocuses on maintaining and improving the company culture by welcoming every new hire as they complete their Snagger Confession, a list of fun personal facts shared with their colleagues via the company intranet. All new employees are armed with a company field guide (known as The Snagger Way) containing useful information to get up to speed on the Snagajob culture, including a list of restaurants near the office, how to explain the company business to a stranger at a cocktail party, and five things employees wish they knew on their first day.

Intuitive Research, a privately-owned aerospace company serving the US military, conducts regular transparent all-employee communications in support of the presidents favorite truism, Bad news doesnt get better with age. With the downturn in the economy, government budget cuts and threats of government shutdown earlier this spring, Intuitive kept the information flowing with town halls, regular discussion series, and free financial advising. Good news is given just as much attention with the president recognizing employees publicly at the State of the Company meetings, or by writing a note of thanks to every employee around Thanksgiving.

AutomationDirect (or ADC), a direct seller of automation controls for manufacturing machines, uses the Wheel of Life analogy in their approach to supporting employees, with a different spoke representing common goals that each employee works to keep in balance, such as family, career or physical well being, among others. The logic follows that if anyones spokes are out of sync, the wheel cant spin efficiently, and so the company offers a number of perks to help employees wheels stay well-rounded: onsite yoga & pilates, personal and professional development courses offered via Smiley Guy University, and a monthly newsletter focused on character building are just a sampling of how ADC keeps their well-oiled machine running and their employees happy.
