1. With the help of neat sketches, explain the various mechanisms of plastic deforma-
tion. [16]

2. (a) What are the various methods used for the measurement of hardness. Discuss
the principle involved in each of these methods.
(b) What is an indenter? What is its purpose? Discuss about various indenter
materials and indenter shapes. [8+8]

3. (a) A sample of glass has a crack half length of 2mm. The young’s modulus of
the glass is 70 GN/m2 and the specific surface energy is 1J /m2 . Estimate its
fracture strength and compare it with its young’s modulus.
(b) What do you mean by fracture toughness? Explain with suitable examples.

4. A metal sample of 10 mm diameter was stressed in tension and the following infor-
mation obtained. A forced of 30 kN gave a total elongation of 2 mm and a force of
34 kN gave a total elongation of 11 mm over an original gauge length of 40 mm.

(a) The value of strain hardening Coefficient (K) and the exponent (n)
(b) The total extension at maximum load
(c) The maximum load applied
(d) The tensile strength of the material. [16]

5. (a) Describe about experimental methods of compression test. Explain any one

6. (a) Why are impact specimens notched.


(b) Discuss the effect of the type of notch and velocity of the hammer on the

1. (a) Find all the slip systems that have the following slip planes: (1) (111) is an
FCC crystal and (2) (110) in BCC crystal.
(b) Show that resolved shear stress reaches a maximum value when φ1 = φ2 = 450 ,
where φ1 is the angle of inclination of slip plane normal with tensile axis and
φ2 is angle between slip direction and tensile axis.
(c) A wire of 300 m long elongates by 3 cm when a tensile force of 200 N is applied.
What is the modulus of elasticity if the diameter of the wire is 5 mm. [5+6+5]

2. (a) Give the P/D2 values for various test materials where P is the load and D is
the diameter of indentation.
(b) Give the mathematical relationships between Brinell’s harness number and
ultimate tensile strength and explain them.
(c) Compare VHN & BHN and explain why there is a deviation in hardness values,
above 300. [5+6+5]

3. (a) Explain the differences between ductile fracture and brittle facture.
(b) Why is there a greater tendency for brittle fracture to occur at high rates of
straining? Discuss in detail. [6+10]

4. (a) Derive the relations between engineering stress and true stress, engineering
strain and true strain.
(b) Discuss the advantages associated with the usuage of true strain over engi-
neering strain, citing examples. [10+6]

5. (a) Define the terms plane strain, plane stress.


(b) When a compressive force of 400 tones is applied to the top surface of a well
lubricated cube it just causes plastic flow. The cube is 80mm on each edge.
What force would be required to produce flow if the faces of the cube other
than the top face were constrained by die forces of 100 and 200 tones. [6+10]

6. (a) What are various Metallurgical factors affecting transition temperature.

7. (a) What is the scope and applicability of fatigue tests.


(b) List out the four measures that may be taken to increase the resistance to

(b) Name and explain the factors that affect the accuracy of any indentation

3. What do you mean by fracture? Explain the various types of fractures. Discuss
different types of fractures in ductile materials. [16]

4. (a) In a stress strain curve discuss the significance of upper yield point and lower
yield point. Explain when you will get sharp yield point.
(b) Is poisson’s ratio a physical property or a mechanical property? Explain why?
(c) Explain how the information from a tensile test can be used in material selec-

5. (a) Compare the proportional limit, modulus of resilience and ductility of gray
cast iron in tension and compression.

the compression test. Why?
