Did Not My Heart Go With You?

2 Kings 5:26 We ask it of ourselves. We ask it of our family members. We would like to ask it of a lot of people. It is that question of frustration. In one form or another it asks, Why did I (You) do that? Dont you imagine that Gehazi was asking himself why he had done what he had done. Isnt it amazing how a sudden moment can bring us an idea that seems to be a good one, only to realize later that it was one for the dumb and regretted list . Consequences, that is the word. We avoid even considering the thought that there might be some lasting repercussions from something we have done. Still, marketers for retail sales are very aware of our sudden dispositions, and use our impulses to buy something to their advantage. For example, you may have had no intention to purchase that candy bar, but there it was at the checkout stand. So, you bought it. Impulses to do something that was not previously planned can be tough to resist. Consider this story about Gehazi. He showed all the signs of being a loyal, submissive servant to his master, Elisha. It was the thought of that gold and those fancy clothes that got him. You can imagine the thoughts. The clothes and gold had a natural appeal. What would it hurt to have some of those things? The man had been served well. He had offered. It was common for a prophet to receive from the people he was serving. Even the lie may have seemed justified. In the midst of an impulsive action it is hard to see the bigger picture. Elisha may have had many good reasons to not take a gift from Naaman. Gehazi saw only the moment, and thought he got away with it. No action goes without knowledge. Elisha confronted his servant, and shared the realization that the actions were known. Elishas heart had been with him in his selfish and impulsive deed. Not only would Gehazi have to live with the knowledge of his deception, he would carry Naamans leprosy with him all his days. Before impulse carries you, know that the heart of God is with you. It is far better than regret. Russ
