Most common are the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) and the full converter (FC). Under some ac network configurations, the complex controls they apply can lead to control interactions, labelled these days as sub-synchronous control interactions (SSCI). One such ac network configuration is when a wind farm ends up being radially connected into a series compensated ac transmission line. SSCI can cause severe disruption to wind turbine generators, particularly some DFIGs. Another challenge to radial transmission for wind farms is through HVDC transmission. The preferred means of HVDC transmission for wind farm feeders is with voltage sourced converter (VSC) transmission. The VSC controls are unique for this application. Thyristor based HVDC transmission known as line commutated converter (LCC) transmission presents an extreme challenge for a radial feeder from a wind farm and these issues will be discussed. Wind farms also require sufficient ac system short circuit capacity for their wind turbine generators to function acceptable and this too will be discussed. Needless to say, these issues cannot be effectively studied with conventional power system stability programs. Instead detailed electromagnetic transient simulation must be used to pre-determine the suitability of a wind farm in challenging configurations. Biography of Dennis Woodford Dennis Woodford was Special Studies Engineer in Transmission Planning of Manitoba Hydro where he worked on the Winnipeg Twin Cities 500 kV interconnection and the Nelson River HVDC project. He is the original developer of the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation software, which he started in 1975 while at Manitoba Hydro. He joined the Manitoba HVDC Research Centre as Executive Director (86 01) and is now President of Electranix Corporation, a specialist consulting company based in Winnipeg. He is a registered Professional Engineer with the Province of Manitoba and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Manitoba. He is the recipient of the IEEE Power Engineering Society Uno Lamm Award and a Life Fellow of the IEEE. He is Past-Chairman of the IEEE Subcommittee on HVDC and FACTS, and is active in CIGRE.
