Open Until Filled $3,300 - $3,500/month depending on education and experience Exempt Position is contingent on receipt of grant(s) and is renewable each year dependent on funding.

GENERAL NATURE OF POSITION: SJSU Upward Bound provides low-income, potential first-generation college students academic support and guidance throughout their high school careers. The Academic Coordinator coordinates key aspects of the UB program, particularly academic support services, and evaluates academic performance for low-income, potential first generation college-bound students in their pursuit of postsecondary programs. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Plan and coordinate Saturday College Program and After-School Tutoring. Plan and coordinate Summer Program courses and tutoring sessions. Provide academic and career advising and assistance with college and financial aid applications to high school students (9th 12th) on a scheduled and drop-in basis at two of the four school sites, after school at PCP offices, and during Saturday College. Develop Four-Year Educational Plans in accordance with a-g certified high school course list. Monitor students academic progress. Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate academic support staff (i.e., tutors). With Student Services Specialist, coordinate academic preparation workshops and seminars. Participate in the recruitment and selection process of project participants. Coordinate collection and maintenance of records for each program participant. Collect and analyze data on academic services and student progress (courses, workshops, activities, and other services) and provide feedback to the Project Director.

With Systems and Data Coordinator, complete annual performance reports for the Dept. of Education and the California State University Chancellors Office. With Project Director, establish working relationships with personnel at target schools and community agencies. Coordinate co-curricular activities throughout the year (e.g., one-day and overnight college tours and cultural field trips, service learning, student council, room scheduling and supplies for classes and workshops). Assist Project Director in recruiting and providing guidance to members of the TRIO Parent Empowerment Council (PEC). Participate in PEC activities. Enforce all program rules and disciplinary procedures. Represent UB in professional and collaborative organizations, as requested by the Project Director. Maintain familiarity with the program budget. Attend all UB staff meetings. Other duties as assigned.

INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS: Reports to Director, Pre-College Programs. Interacts daily with Upward Bound staff, students, parents, and SJSU staff. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Education and Experience: Bachelors Degree in Education, Sociology, Psychology, Communications, or related field, or equivalent experience required. Master's Degree in Education or related field is preferred. Teaching experience preferred. Experience in coordinating or implementing an academic support program. Experience in working directly with school personnel. Two years experience working in an educational equity program or a similar setting. Experience in writing reports and conducting program evaluations. 2. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required Strong analytical, organizational, and planning skills. Excellent writing, editing and communication skills. Knowledge of high school requirements and the University of California/California State University systems a-g college preparatory sequence. Knowledge of and familiarity with academic assessment tools. Ability to coordinate and evaluate specialized course curriculum in Mathematics, Science, Languages, and English. Substantial knowledge of high school curricular offerings and requirements. Knowledge of college admissions and financial aid applications, procedures, and timelines. Knowledge of and commitment to the mission of a project serving low-income and under-represented students. Ability to motivate and relate to high school students and maintain positive working relationships in a diverse, multi-cultural environment. Ability to travel to program sites (car required). Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as required for program activities. Computer literate: IBM and Macintosh operating systems and software. Bilingual preferred, but not required. Persons coming from backgrounds similar to the target population are encouraged to apply. 3. Physical Requirements Must be able to operate a PC including mouse and keyboard. Must be able to operate office equipment. Must be able to use telephone hand and / or headset. Must be able to navigate uneven surfaces. 4. Complexity of Duties Work on a variety of problems of moderate scope where analysis of data or solutions requires an evaluation of factors. Exercises independent judgment in developing methods and evaluating criteria for achieved results. Work without appreciable direction on assigned projects/ programs.

Work has high impact on departments ability to provide effective customer service and ability to meet multiple deadlines.
