PROMINENT political commentator Dr Paul Williams says Labor faces a struggle to retain marginal Brisbane wards such as The Gabba and Doboy at this weeks council election. Barely a month after the LNPs landslide state election win, the Griffith University lecturer said the new make-up of Brisbane City
Council would represent another resounding victory. But social commentator David Chalke said the state election result would not necessarily have a knock-on effect at the local government poll. Cr John Campbell holds Doboy for Labor on a narrow 1 per cent margin, while in The Gabba, Cr Helen Abrahams margin is 2.7 per cent. Dr Williams said while it
was unlikely the scale of the state victory would be repeated, Labor faced the prospect of losing at least five of the 10 wards it holds. If we see the same swing (as in the state election), Labor wont have any wards left, he said. Even if they retain five wards, I think they will be happy with that. Labor now holds seven wards by a margin of 4 per cent or less.
But Mr Chalke said a candidates reputation was often more important than a party ticket. What we tend to see is, yes, you do get some knockon effect, but it always tends to be muted in local government because the issues there are seen to be different. Ratepayers do distinguish between dustbins and parks and leash-free areas, and hospitals and schools and that sort of things, he said.
Labor state president Andrew Dettmer said issues such as rates were more likely to determine votes. The idea that somehow it is all a spillover from some general position arising from the state election I dont think thats correct, he said. People make up their minds on council issues.
