WEEK OF 8/20/12

here We Are in Place and Time

Celebrations
Central Idea: Families recognize important personal and cultural events through traditions.

Literacy
This year literacy in our classroom will model the curriculum goals of Chadwick International along side the structure of a program called The Daily Five. The objective of this structure is to allow students a range of choices while supporting their independence in literacy. Please see the 3rd page of this newsletter for more information. In writing, I am looking forward to building a classroom of writers who write because they enjoy it, not because they feel they have to! This week we will discuss different reasons people write. Students will focus on writing about topics that interests them without worrying about conventions.

Numeracy
This week our Numeracy focus will be on introducing the Daily Calendar routines as well as some components of the Everyday Math program. We will also explore pattern blocks as tools to create illustrations for number stories.

UOI
Our first Unit of Inquiry this year will focus on personal and cultural events especially traditions and celebrations. This aligns well with the beginning of the year as we practice and establish important pieces of our classroom community such as our hopes and dreams, essential agreements, and routines.

WEEK OF 8/20/12

The Daily 5
Dear Parents, We have just begun our Daily 5 and FACE adventure! This is the reading and writing program implemented in my classroom. Daily 5 is the structure we will use to plan our morning literacy block. Children will be busy completing meaningful literacy tasks. The choices will be: *Read to self *Work on writing *Word Work *Listen to reading *Read to Someone Also included on the Daily 5 schedule are *Meet with Ms. Eaton and *Guest Star. These portions of the schedule allow for Guided Reading time as well as ESOL support. This week, we will be focusing on increasing our stamina to work independently during Read to Self. Within the next few months, the other choices will be introduced. While the students are completing their literacy tasks, I will be meeting with small groups and conferencing with individual students. Daily 5 is how we schedule our language block. FACE is what we study during this time. FACE is an acronym for the four major components of reading. They are: F for Fluency A for Accuracy C for Comprehension E for Expanding Vocabulary The children will learn reading strategies within each category. These strategies will become tools for the children to use to help themselves become better readers and writers. I will keep you informed when new strategies are introduced. Then, when you read with your child at home, you will be able to reinforce these concepts. It is going to be exciting to watch your child's reading and writing skills blossom throughout the year. If you have any questions regarding this program, please ask. I am always excited to share what I know about Daily 5 and FACE! Best, Ms. Eaton
